I just ran across this and didn't see it posted any where else.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/710406053/hangar-18-pinups-modern-pinup-miniatures-bawidaman

This from the KS web site:

Bringing Andrew Bawidamann’s pinups to life in the form of 54mm resin miniatures, using 3D sculpting and printing technologies.

The Beginning

Andrew Bawidamann’s pinups evoke the style of old school bomber nose art. You have seen them on shirts all over the gaming conventions, and we’ve loved them for years. We finally got to meet him in person and set a plan in motion we’ve been secretly plotting for years. Andrew has been approached to do miniatures by well known companies before, but nothing ever came of it, until now.

Andrew is very excited to see this project realized. He supplied us with his original art for this project and has agreed to hand sign limited editions fine art prints as incentives for this project’s backers. Lately he has been working on even more designs and has been highlighted in a documentary on independent artists that is currently in production. Keep an eye out for "Making It".

Who We Are

Kirk, Liliana and Torin are long time miniature enthusiasts and avid modelers. It has been our dream to do a line of high quality 54mm miniatures based on the Bawidamann Pinups. We chose the 54mm (1:32 scale) so that we can transfer all the intricate details from the original drawings into the sculpt. We picked resin for the material, because resin casting brings superb details and also easy to work with - making it the most preferred material for serious figure modelers and painters.

Scale/size comparison between 25/28mm, 54mm and 75mm

Now we’re finally getting a chance to make it happen, we're hoping you could lend us some help. We are working with an excellent 3D artist to bring Andrew’s work into the 3D world. Alain Viesca is an amazing artist in his own right and has agreed to help us make this dream a reality. We hope this introduction to the world of miniatures will get him hooked for the long run. Check out the side-by-side progress shot below and see what we mean. We hope to do a line of miniatures based on Alain’s art in the future.

From original art to digital sculpting to 3D print prototype

Working with Andrew’s art combined with Alain’s sculpting skills, we are getting closer to production ready. We’ve spent our time for research, building relationships with our artists and vendors and tested the production process to make sure the production quality is excellent. This will be a miniature line we can be proud of and that you will want in your collection. To make this project have an even sweeter finish, we have brought well known painters in the miniature industry: Matthieu Fontaine, Jennifer Haley, Jessica Rich and Aaron Lovejoy onboard as our box art painters. They have also agreed to paint some models for this Kickstarter.

In my assessment your art style translates extremely poorly to 3d due to the cartoonish, high contrast features used.

Luckily for you that doesn't matter because you are making models that have breasts. Knowing your target audience, I am completely certain you will succeed! Good luck!

It is not my art style. It is not my Kickstarter. I just posted it because I didn't see anyone else post it.

Scale kills it for me, I have barely enough time to paint my armies, never mind display pieces. I wish them luck though.

Before anyone gets too carried away, let me point out: These are NOT game miniatures. They are 54 mm scale;

These are miniatures for painting and displaying, they would be wildly out of scale with... uh, every game I can think of. If there is a system that uses 54mm scale I don't know what it is.

That said, they are quite cool for fans of pin-ups. But they are big hunks of resin and the price reflects that: the lowest level to get a single piece is $40, and they go up from there. Still, the campaign is not entirely without merit... just not gaming merit.

I love the style and have a few of his t-shirts but i'm not sure they transfer across to 3d that well and coupled with the high price {not sure why some are more than others when they are the same size } so this is going to be one that I wait and see what's available at the end .

as resin itself is a decent part of the cost,

I suspect the more expensive ones require a higher volume of resin to cast

Interesting, but to be honest, I think pinup art looks classier as pinup art.

My girlfriend and I were discussing nose-art while visiting the Udvar-Hazdy annex of the National Air & Space Museum and got a book on the subject... A lot of the bomber nose art was based off various pin-ups done for magazines and such int he era. One major artist definitely used unrealistic proportions: his portraits have extremely long legs and arms. He also seems to have had a weird fetish for women talking on phones, but that's another story.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

well being aware of what the blanked out ones look like I don't see them needing more .in fact some of the expensive ones yet to be revealed would use less resin than cheaper.

I love the base artwork but the models are not so hot, and the lowest possible price for a model is $40, so... best of luck with that. 25% on the first day means it should make it barring some fiasco.

They should have held off launching until they had a painted display to show how well it translates from sketch to mini. It's hard to tell from the picture of the one posted.

Seems to me the Blackhawk (EB- $135 or Reg. $145) is a much better deal than the Hornet (EB- $200 or Reg. $210), isn't it?

Blackhawk - 3 figs for $135 (EB) = $45 each

Hornet - 4 figs for $200 (EB) = $50 each

Usually the deal gets better as you go up. Am I missing something here?

Black Hawk gives 1 each of the 40, 47 and 55 dollar figures

with Hornet you get to pick any four figures of your choice (so bad if you want 4x 40, good if you want 4x 55)

It's a very subtle detail: the miniatures are in different price levels, and Blackhawk lets you pick a model from each price level, Hornet lets you pick 4 from any level.

Spoiler:

That said, neither seems like what I would call a "good deal".

Also, a higher quality image of the model they have made.

Spoiler:

With or without paint, that model clearly works out well. However, I'm not so much a fan of the other 3D models they have so far. Hope they're still being refined.

Thanks for clearing that up Orlando and Buzzsaw. Doing French homework and reading kickstarter at the same time... not the best idea for multiple reasons.

I love the art shown, but the sample miniature doesn't sell it for me. While it's mostly a faithful translation, the gaunt face and the fake books kill it. Big boobs are fine... but they have to look right. The artwork gets it spot on, the miniature misses the mark.

And the face is so, so important on a female miniature, and is something that so many sculptors can't seem to carry across from original art.

I'm curious to see how others turn out, though.

Yeah. This is something that could be fun, but the prototype model shown... I don't know. For $55, I don't know that I want one of my first reactions to be 'Well, if I did some work with plastic card and green stuff maybe I could make the gun look better.'

Now see I'm in like Flynn on this one but the difference if I do paint just for show so for me it's a great deal. That said theirs only one or two I want so I won't be even getting higher then $92 max.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

I really like pinups, but these aren't appealing to me at all. Disappointing.

But there is at least one tabletop game played with 54mm scale minis - Inquisitor.

Just to let everyone know that this is a WIP. We are a little behind on the sculpting because our sculptor lives only about 3 blocks from where that massive tornado went through in Oklahoma. He didn't lose his home but he has been busy helping out and cleaning up, so this put him a little behind the curve. We've got him working hard now, so expect some new sculpts soon.

We have also been considering doing different sizes as stretch goals. So there could be some 28mm and some 75mm or 80mm in the future.

Thanx,
Kirk Troy

Day 2: 50% Funded and Hi-Res Zombie Hunter Render
Update #1 · Jun 25, 2013 · 3 comments

We are 50% funded!

We are very excited to see this progress and can't thank you enough for your support.

Some of you requested a Hi-Res render for Zombie Hunter. Here is the latest update from our sculptor. We want to make sure every little detail of the attached weapons will not get lost after layers of primer and paints have been applied. A couple more details to fix and she'll be on the way to the printer, we hope to be able to show you the new prototype soon. More updates are on the way.

And a comment of importance from that update;
Creator Hangar 18 Miniatures about 18 hours ago
