We buy some of our stuff from GW stores (and some from Dark Sphere) so we can feel relaxed about playing in their stores. If I felt we were under surveillance, if it were a compulsion rather than a question of goodwill, maybe we'd simply move on, play somewhere else.
At the same time, you can see the manager's point, can't you?
No I can't, he dose not own the store, GW dose, it a GW product, GW got my money, I should be able to play GW game in GW store with GW products. No matter where I buy GW products, GW get my money. I GW doesn't what my to use GW brought from non- GW store, then they should only sell there stuff in there own stores. It not my job to support a lose leader like there store front. Simply put if the GW store has game table that they use for open gaming, and I use only GW stuff, I should be treated as a GW customer because that what I am.
You might want to - but it's not your right. The stores are retail outlets, not marketing for a wholesaler.
As others have observed, simply buying the occasional odd item in the store you want to use all the time is probably enough to earn you a slot at a gaming table. But the manager has to (a) make a sales quota and (b) not deal with people who think they're entitled when that ain't the case.
And, like others, I find the premise of this thread... unconvincing in the extreme. Especially the shape shifting aliens who have records of how many exactly pots of paint I've purchased.
And I stand by, if the GW store have open gaming (important part, open gaming) I should be allowed to use my paid for GW product the play GW games in a GW store during open gaming times.

bs. no store can prevent someone from leaving without buying. slight exaggeration I have to presume?
As for the records to be pulled up; only if you give them your information and that information can be shared amongst stores can it be even remotely true. if you DO give your information to them, then it is on you anyway as it is not a requirement of purchasing products in a store.
What you don't know about salesmenship and the world today may shock you.
Sure. So I go into a store, and I wish to purchase something. I find it (with or without help), I pay, and I leave. This is my usual interaction with GW stores. Where in that process is my information gathered without my providing it? (hint : it isn't as I never provide a store with my personal information).
That same store cannot make me purchase something before I leave either if I don't find what I want (or if I just happen to be stopping in to say hi, look around, waste time, etc).
@Grot 6 : Yes .. that's the GW website's policies. Who is talking about online purchases in this thread?

Exaggeration yes,
But it worked every time.
Exaggeration does not further a point tbh. It just invalidates your legitimacy when making claims like that. Perhaps that person was just gullible. That still doesn't change the facts that you cannot prevent someone from coming into a store and leaving without making a purchase.
The info is ongoing and interrelated. Online and B and M go hand in hand, especially when I cross reference your payment method with what you bought. Just as I said, as well- Lower level peions get the data and can pretty much cajol a kid into doing what they want him to with some quick, effective salesmanship- without telling said kid exactly the end results.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Uhhh...no. This manager just gave the OP a great reason to A) never go to or buy anything from his store again and B) never buy anything from GW again.
I'm not saying the OP is going to do this, but rather than give him a reason to patronize the store, he in fact incentivised the OP to do the opposite. In fact, he directly caused the posting of this thread, which absolutely has a negative impact on GW's image.
I mean, that's an aggressive move and I would certainly feel both uncomfortable and unwelcome. Looking up a purchase history? Shouldn't he be happy that they guy bought the Eldar codex? If GW doesn't want people to buy from indy stores, maybe GW should stop supplying indy stores. But, oh, wait, GW can't really afford to do that.
Sure, this manager should want his store to do well, but badgering his employer's customers is certainly not his job, and if it is, well, GW has some serious problems.

I certainly wouldn't defend the alleged actions of the equally alleged store manager, assuming that a complete, factual and objective detailing of the alleged events has been provided. Regrettably, there is no independent corroboration that such has been forthcoming. Drawing conclusions about, or from, this scenario is then both futile and, largely, impossible. Wouldn't you agree?

Some managers are like this - they want you either buying product or not be in the store. They don't want to 'babysit' a bunch of people who are not giving him sales.
Some managers take a more community related approach - if you're in the store, having fun with likeminded people, you're more likely to spend at the store.
Some manager do a mix. They'll have gaming days and non-gaming days. On non-gaming days, it's buy or get out. On gaming days, they help foster the community.
Some managers love their job, love interacting with people, and love getting involved with the community. Some managers are complete douchebags who aren't overley interested in the community, players or sometimes even really the game - they're just there to do their job.
While it's fun saying 'All GW store owners are jerks', it's a pretty unfair generalization. There's just as much a chance to have an donkey-cave GW store manager as there is to have an donkey-cave independant store manager.
My local GW store is run by the second type, and thank heaven for it. On certain days, certain games have preference to the table space, but that's it. It's easy to stop in and BS with him, and since I follow my son around as he pulls stuff off the shelves and make sure he puts it back in the right spot, even a curious 2 1/2 year old is welcome in there to hang out (with supervision, of course).

I must say I feel lucky to never have experienced that.
My old store got me started and pretty much baby-sitted me
(Heck, those guys basically taught me 2 languages!)
The store I now go to is run by someone who I count as a friend, with whom I often chat and who I help out in his store-tending. Heck I'm gonna be a referee in the tournament they're organizing. However I can see that I never got that because I knew the managers before the whole one-man store and stuff came along. I find it saddening ...

Nothing is really knowable anyway. Your perception of events is unique to you and I filter information from my own perspective, so we don't really understand what each other is saying anyway...No, I would not agree.
If you assume that the OP is being candid, then sure, it is okay to have an opinion about it. If you assume the OP is lying his off, then it is equally okay to have an opinion about that -hypothetical- situation, should it have ever occurred or will ever occur in the future.
And I did not "defend" the actions of anybody. What I did was express a negative opinion about the alleged actions of an individual. I did not report the situation to GW. I said that the behavior as described was a poor way to behave and a poor way to represent an employer.
I'm really not sure what you are saying other than, "Don't say negative things about this guy because we really don't know what happened." But I am not saying negative things about the manager personally. I am expressing an opinion that such behavior is unbecoming of a manager of a retail outlet and has the opposite effect of what it was ostensibly designed to achieve. Did it happen? maybe, maybe not. If it did happen, then heck yea it was inappropriate, and if it happened to me I would report it to the individual's employer. If it didn't happen, oh well, what is the harm in talking about it?
Ooooooh... GW might be harmed by a discussion of a possibly untrue incident that casts its employees in a negative light... Well, I could care less. I have seen plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that Games Workshop maltreats its fans and customers, and that such an incident that the OP described is even plausible is indicative of the antagonistic relationship that GW has cultivated, of its own volition, with its customers and fans.
True, not true, will we ever know? If we couldn't discuss something on the internet just because it was unverified there would be no discussion on the internet. Take it for what it is: an account of poor behavior by a GW store manager that may or may not be true. That's how I took it. I threw it on my mental pile of unverified isolated incidents of antagonistic and short-sighted behavior by a GW employee. And yep, I think it is worth talking about. If you have a problem with the thread, maybe you should address the OP instead of me.

Why someone would play games at a GW store is kinda beyond me. They are closets with no bathrooms (for guests). If it's the only gaming shop in town, that's another thing. That said, I've had nothing but great cordial interactions with managers of GW stores. I've played a few games there, but mostly just hung out, and was never told to leave because I wasn't buying anything. I will say that I was at one store which was at a mall, and they had a no babysitting policy which was to prevent parents from dumping the kids off just to chill while momma gets her nails done.
If anyone has an issue with their GW store, why not call out the specific location, or store number?

We got 2 stores in my town, both are non-GW, one got lots of inventory, the other less so. Both are mainly comic book stores.
I started playing 40k only last year at the smallest store, mostly because they actually did a low point intro activity for 40k, which got me to drive there and meet up a few people. The first few times I got here, I didn't bought nothing, as it is mostly a comic book store and I'm not much of a comic book guy and I don't have alot of people around me who enjoy board games.
But the manager's friendly, make jokes, mingles really, comes check out the action (even thought he's not much into 40k at all), and never ask us to buy to play as well, compared to another local store, where you must buy to use the tables, and you got to deal with some yeller because there's some MTG tourney or whatever right beside you.
I ended up spending 300-400$ at the smallest store, 1-2 kits, but mostly all of my recent RPG books have been from there.
OP, you surely landed on someone who was either being pressured form higher to sell sell sell and lacked the tact to approach the situation, or just the quintessential bossman who's all about 'follow my lead or get out of the way'

Easier still:
I never buy from GW.
GW is making that last choice easier and easier....

*EDIT* To be clear - I suspect that the 'Buy or Get Out' was a manager being over zealous in his interpretation of GW policy.
But also suspect that he was acting on suggested policy....
Hopefully most GW stores have managers that realize that a happy customer is a return customer.

Right around late may, I was meeting up with a couple of my buddies at a GW store to play a few rounds of 40k. I was planning already to buy some guardsmen and maybe put them together during any down time. However I had gone in there before, played and not bought anything that day. So when the store manager at my GW store told me, "Well I get that your just waiting for a match, but the company said that if your not gaming, shopping, or building/painting something I have to ask you to leave the store." When I thought things were getting better around there, as my GW manager was a horrible salesman, very aggressive salesman and kind of a strange personality (he quit a couple weeks ago) he finally started to calm down, and then this.
Needless to say I was pretty peeved. If I couldn't wait in the air conditioning (I live in AZ, its hot outside) for 5 minutes while my buddies arrived for a game, while theres NOBODY in the store but him, its just absurd. Not only that, but having policies like this makes me not want to go in there in the first place anyway, with exception to picking up paint when I need it, which isn't often.
I don't know if anyone here has been in a gun store in America before, but the atmosphere is somewhat strict and the owners/salesmen can range from strict to outright donkey-caves. However, even now when the firearm business is booming and during busy hours gun shops can fill up, I have never, ever been asked to leave unless I want to buy something. Even when I wasn't of age to purchase to a firearm.
If an arguably failing game company that sells a niche product feels like they can ask me to leave unless I want to buy stuff, then they obviously don't want/need my business. Thats the wrong way to reach out to customers both old and new IMO.

If someone was actually ejected from a store, I assume it's for one of the reasons people are generally ejected from stores.
I can 100% ensure you GW does has such a system. Other stores only asks for your zip/postal code. But GW (Canada) does ask for your name when you make a purchase. during a causal conversation at the cashier, GW store A was able to tell I used to buy from GW store B (which closed down).
It's true, when I worked there I could check your purchases even if you paid in cash, so long as we got your name. Mostly we used it for parents/relatives asking what to get kids for presents, checked up on what they've been buying and made some suggestions. I'm pretty sure I could see purchases from every store in Canada. Not sure about online, this was just before the major online overhaul, in like '09 I think?
To the OP
Blaming you as the customer isn't very effective at getting you to buy there. Though I feel like that he said that because the higher ups were hounding him and store closing down was starting to sound like a reality. He is still wrong and has probably lost what business you did bring in, but they can get pretty rough up at HQ. That's sort of what happened at the GW I was at.

I won't support the main FLGS in my area. They charge full MSRP, rarely re-stock, and if you ask to
special order something it takes weeks and often falls thru the cracks.
I don't care for the staff and their attitudes either. They have lost me as a customer. I tried to submit
feedback to management, and didn't care for the way they responded\process it.
With that being said, I enjoy using their tables and gaming areas. I guess they are determined to
bring in revenue from MTG and Yugiho. They actually kicked the 40K players off the mini gaming tables
last Sunday to make room for a Yugiho tournament.

This.
I have experienced subtle cues from GW operators in the past to move along or buy. Contrast this with any other retail establishment I have patronized in this, very large, country across several states and decades. I have only ever experienced this at GW stores. In the same shopping center as our defunct GW I can loiter in Bass pro-shops all day, trying out equipment, going to free classes, letting my kids go to free demos etc. literally all day. Never have I been asked to leave or buy. It's like a gratis, redneck amusement park. Full disclosure: I have made substantial purchases from Bass-Pro on occasion and rarely leave without buying something. But the same is true at my FLGS (I can't recall a visit there in the last 3 years where I did not buy something). The place is great, has a regular discount program, lots of space and friendly staff. I only buy GW from my local for this reason. (I don't even play 40K or Fantasy, but drop lots of money on models that I use with other rules).

No, I would not agree.
The scientific method is alive and well, I see.
I'm really not sure what you are saying other than, "Don't say negative things about this guy because we really don't know what happened."
Actually, I'm saying it makes sense to couch things in conditional statements. For example: If this happened the way the OP alleges it happened, that Manager should be reported to GW's head office, and likely deserves to lose his job; if this is representative of GW's corporate policy, they ought to be reported to the Information Commissioner's Office (or, if this is representative of GW's policies in Canada alone, its Canadian equivalent).
Hope that clears things up for you
Well, I could care less.
Couldn't care less. Couldn't care less. If you could care less, it implies a given level of caring, up to the highest contextual and subjective level of concern it is possible for you to have on any issue. If you couldn't care less, it implies that your level of (again, contextual and subjective) concern is at the lowest it is possible for you to express.
And yep, I think it is worth talking about.
Oh, I agree that it is definitely worth talking about. Where we disagree, as you said earlier, is that I believe you cannot draw absolute conclusions from discussion about the (alleged) incident (there being a stark difference between discussion and conclusion). You believe you can. That being the case, I wish you joy of your clairvoyance.

Relativism at its logical best.... there is no absolute truth, except the absolute truth that there is no truth.... ;/ confused... me too
Wait... What? What is not 'knowable'?
Anything, because anything you 'know' is filtered through your perception of it. It's just a little bit of hyperbolic reductio ad absurdum - pay it no mind.

The only thing it would be is you being a thief. Also, hot checks can wind up on your credit report so why would you want to do... oh, yea, immaturity. Never mind.

But never have I spent hours or days in a shop over an extended period, without buying any guitar strings or picks, then taken in an expensive instrument, which the store sells, and explained I bought it somewhere else. If I did, I'd expect that proprietor to be unhappy.
Maybe my sense of entitlement ain't as well-developed as others. I would still like to see a more detailed story from the OP, to explain why he knew, months before, that he was going to be banned from a store he never visits.

To clarify, I barely ever went to the store since October of this year. I can count all the time I visited on one hand.
I did not know I was going to get banned, at the time it was just paranoia based on my previous experience with that particular store manager.
In short in the past he has given me hints that I had to buy something whenever I was there and told me when he managed another GW to play a game, buy something or leave the store, twice. But that was several years ago.

Just to clarify, I usually wind up buying something from both places. I was just contrasting the alleged behavior with my own experiences with retail stores in this country.

The particular reason why the manager got stroppy was because I bought my eldar codex and wraithguard at a FLGS recently and I do mean recently.
He brings me aside and asks where I bought my codex. I tell him the truth.
After telling him the truth he goes into a speech about whether what I did was ethical.
If you don't buy from there, don't expect to play there.
Your not supporting the store, soon If it doesn't make enough sales GW will close it.

But I did buy from there on different occasions such as paints, models and books. What I bought at the FLGS was severely smaller. And in all honesty the only GW products I bought from the FLGS.

so much BS. who would have thought little plastic men could be such serious business. politics, drama, people getting kicked out, sales targets, starving store managers and their families with a healthy side of privacy invasion and datamining.
oh my it all sounds like so much fun. im shocked that gw doesnt have more customers.
they should invent the new citadel finecontract. for only 100 bucks a month you automatically get whatever new crap they release delivered right to your door. It's only for three years, sign here. they can hang out with the sleazy cellphone people and sleazy gym membership guys. Put all the shops/gyms into one giant sleaze mall. Keep all the sleaze together.

I say Its a free market and you buy where you want too, and if GW stores want to say if you dont buy from them you can't play with them, then pretty soon they'll be closed down anyway...

@loki old fart
What I meant was that, when I was at that store I would buy some products from them. This is before I found out about my local FLGS. And after finding out about the FLGS, I still bought a few models from them.
The earlier thread you are referring was made after buying the new eldar codex and wraithguard from said FLGS. The only GW products I ever actually bought from the FLGS.
And those eldar products I bought are the reason why the GW manager situation occurred because I did not buy those products from them.
The feeling guilty thread was whether or not I should feel guilty. Based on some of those replies I got in that thread I decided it was okay to go there since in the past I bought form them.
The time between that thread and this thread I did not go into the GW store. Remember I was only there since I had a game against another dakkanite who could only go there.
