Howdy all, I've been daydreaming about finishing my Chaos Space Marines/Daemons army since the BAO tournament earlier this year. The BAO taught me that I'm not the most competative player out there, but playing in a GT is a lot of fun and this year it's moving to Vegas! Well, I'm slow as all get out with a brush in my hand so the time for daydreaming is over if I'm going to finish on time. First things first, I can't bring myself to use my defiler no matter how much I like the model, a Soul Grinder on the other hand is very acceptable. So without spending any money and after a little kitbash.....
...............Long way to go to finish, I'll start GS'ing muscles and adding the head next, but the proportions look right.

I love all kinds of feedback and will respond to all questions, thanks for looking!

BTW, here is a picture of a finished CSM squad and a flamer to give an idea of the skin and armor colors I'm using.

Attached the head and started fleshing out some muscles, waiting for GS to dry before I mess something up with a thumb print and figured I'd post the progress.

Next I think I'll sculpt some random feathers on his upper back and sticking out from under the shoulderpads, let that dry and make a neck out of tubes and wire. Still not sure how I'm going to make the transaction from waist to the Defiler body, any suggestions would be great.

Until next time......

Nice! Love how the SG is coming along, and the flamer looks great!

Thanks BloodGenesis! My flamers are one of my favorite units.

So, anatomy is not my strong point and I've been struggling a bit. I've doubled the size of his pecs and added ribs on his right side to see how it looks, I think it turned out O.K.. I've also started making feathers and tubes in preperation for the back and neck portions coming up, every time I finish a layer I use the leftover GS on these parts so none of it goes to waste.

Any tips or ideas are appreciated, my imagination is running on empty, I take solace in the fact that if something doesn't turn out just right I can cover it up with mech parts . I'll pick up the next layer after work and post again tonight. Thanks for looking.

The musculature looks a lot more natural on that last pic, good job

Just a thought, if you have spare pipey and metal strappy bits, maybe use them to cover the transition from fleshy torso to mech at the base? I just think some wires and borg-like implants snaking up the torso would really tie the mech/ flesh boundary together.

Thanks for the kind words Scoundrel13, I think you're on to something with the "pipey strappy" bits. I was leaning towards a big belt/flowy cloth cover up kind of thing, but I like your idea better.

Front muscles are done, I'm actually pleased and suprised by how it's turning out. Next is the back and then the fun stuff like feathers, tentacles and pipes.

While waiting for this step to dry I started on my Sorcerer, all of my termies are magnetized so he shouldent take too long to get done since I'm only doing a torso.

After playing around I decided to start the back details. I wanted to stay away from a wing look and still sell the Tzeentch birdlike feel so single random feathers poking out of his armor and back like weeds is the idea. I need to make around six more feathers and four more pipes for neck, but this gives you an idea as to what I'm going for.

I'm probably over posting, but I get bored while everything dries.

Hey, I live in Vegas! It's fun here.

Those feathers look amazing. Are those molded? Definitely like how they're poking out, think that'll end up awesome in the end.

Hey Evertras, I make the drive to Vegas a couple times a year, I love it there. The feathers are individually sculpted, probably the easiest thing there is for how cool it looks, I'll do a quick tutorial on my next post if you like.

Thanks dakka_dok, that's the first Megusta!!! Anyone has ever given me.

Wow. With the way those wires and feathers look, the last thing YOU should be doing is asking US for ideas. Damn.

This is looking pretty cool.

As for the merge from flesh to machine... Have you thought about the (I forget the specific name of it) virus that Obliterators have? That stretched-flesh look that the Oblit models have would look great going from torso to machine.

Got distracted learning techie stuff like how to use the quotes feature and the InstaFrame ap on my ipad.

As promised a feather making tutorial, super easy and looks great on Dark Angels gear as well.

Here is an example of a wing I made on one of my Oblits, this is before I added the last step so its a little stiff looking but you get the idea.

Glad you like the progress so far. I have made a decision on the torso, my plan was to paint the body and then attach it to make it easier to hold while working on it, but I can't wrap my head around how to blend it in after the fact. So, I'm going with your suggestion and doing an Oblitesque( Yay, new word!) fleshy transition as well as a few wire/tubes for good measure and just deal with the pain of painting it attached.

Hah, I just read through 5-6 pages of your thread! So jealous of the work you put into your Maulerfiend, I chickened out and kept mine stock. Makes sense you like the yellow, we use the same recipe, highlight to bone and hit it with P3 yellow ink, great minds......

Back on track now, I'll post the final pre-paint photos tomorrow, going to power through it tonight after work to finish it.

That is a really simple, awesome way to make feathers. I was wondering what the 'trick' was, but apparently it's just a little patience. Very, very cool! I might try to use this for my Tzeentch sorceror that I need to make soon. Thanks, and keep it up!

Thanks fellas! Tzeentch Sorcerors, Dark Angels and Kroot(never thought of that one, but good idea!) are perfect for feathers, I'm doing a variation where you do the same thing on my Sorceror that turned out great I'll be showing soon. Let me know how it works out for you.

There it is, four failed attempts at his waist and this is what I settled on. I broke off part of the body, glued it on and magnatized it so I can paint it seperately, going to be so much easier. Added more wire and feathers to the back and I'm done.

I'm going camping for the weekend so no paint until Monday, good progress on the Sorceror but not enough to show. Let me know what you think, especially if you see some thing I missed or think I should add, last chance before primer.
Have a great weekend and thanks for looking.

I like what you have here, so far.
The only suggestion I'd make is for the lower rear torso. In the above post, the bottom left pic.
The back is just kind of... there...
I'd do more of the obliteratoresque stretchiness/tendonish look tomake it look like his skin is slowly creeping out to envelop the piston on the side.

Thanks MagickalMemories, I hope you meant something like this

That was a great idea, I think it looks much better now. I kind of made up the skin color as I went along, basic shade and highlight finished, I'll go back and smooth it all out after the armor is done. What do you thing, too green? Not sold on it yet, maybe it will look better after more of it is finished.

It may be a bit of a stretch but i think if you did the chest and abs a sort of yellow and then the feathers and the back in blue and blacks. Basically like a blue and gold macaw, you know to go with the whole bird theme and also they're close to the colours of Tzeentch. Maybe have the yellow more in the center of it all and the blue just creeping in from the sides and top a bit so it all blends together. Maybe the blue coming in as slashes like tiger stripes?

Sorry i go on thought tangents when it comes to paint ideas lol. What ever you choose i think will look great because it's turning into a great model!

You hit the nail on the head, as far as what I mean.
I probably would have had some of it come up farther than you did, but I don't think that's a huge detriment.

That's a great start on color scheme. I hope you kept your "recipe."

I love the idea of the chest/ab area being a different color than the rest on the skin, I've already finished the skin areas though, maybe I'll feel brave and make a change.........

Glad we are on the same page, I don't think I'll keep this recipe, I like it but he is going to be an original so no need. hopefully I'll have time tonight to finish the armor. Thanks for the kind words, keeps me focused!

Excuse me while I clean up the drool off of my desk, floor and myself. Those conversions are wicked!

However, I must say I personally don't really like the blue skin. Its not that I don't like the colors, in fact I like them quite a bit, I just dont think its going to fit in very well with all the metallic's of the bottom half of the model.

If you do the metal bits as tarnished gold then i think it will fit very well. Blue and gold go together quite nicely. And if you add some blue accents to the metal bits here and there it will help pair the two components of flesh and metal nicely
