Well I was at my local GW for a day out and they happened to have a painting competition on. (painting a tau pathfinder following the tau update).

I have no real history there and this was one of the first times I have been in there. Anyway, the employee gave me a sprue and told me to make a model and start painting. However, they gave me no knife or cutters and I have to twist the parts off the sprue!
Also, when I was glueing the model together, they issued me Citadel PVA glue to assemble it with.

When it came to painting the model, they gave me about 5 colours and I had to stand at the till to paint because the painting tables were *reserved*. I asked for a detail brush and water pot but they claimed they didn't have one any. The paints were about 5 years old and had gone hard .

What really insulted me was that when I gave them my model to enter the competition with, they said it has to be based and needs to have a specific colour scheme! (the colours they gave me did not even match the ones required for the competition). There was no basing material to use so I grabbed a hand-full of gravel from outside, smeared the PVA on the model, poured the gravel over it and walked out.

Is this an arrogant member of staff who is spoiling a 15 year-olds fun, or is it an extreme case of GW trying to get you to buy their products?
Has anyone else got any stories like this?

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

This.

GW gave away Tau suits? Unlikely.

Reserved paint tables? Unlikely.

This reeks of trolling.

Also GW stores don't have old paints on hand anymore for customers to use. They are only supposed to have the new paints on hand.

They were charging £3 to enter and they were giving out a pathfinder model. This story was 100% true and yes, there was reserved painting tables.

I'm all for a good old fashioned GW bash thread, but this is just too far fetched to be believable.

similar and yet different..

Had an "Armies on Parade" event recently locally.

3 armies entered..

Forge World Krieg (plus FW tank conversion kits)
Current CSM hotness (all current models, including fliers and big ol biomechanical critters)
Old School Marines (utilizing Rogue Trader era tanks, conversions, and current Marine basic tactical kits)

When I went to the register to vote, I got flabberghasted.

I voted for the Old Skool Marines. (I love the old tanks, the painter had a HECK of a nice board, his painting was clean but non-cannonical (home brew chapter), and I just generally dug it)

I guess you could say I voted with my heart.. lol. I also need to mention that it was done by a friend of mine, so there IS an inherent bias, but he also knows that I would not blindly vote for his work unless I felt it best.

However.. here is the issue. The store manager/guy passively/aggressively tried to sway me to vote for the other armies.. and in the conversation were the following quotes... ( I noted them down so I could remember them as soon as I left the store, sitting in my car)

... well... yeah, that army is nice .. but there are no new models in it! All old stuff.. whereas the CSM there has the NEW Helldrake etc.. (pushing the new hotness), and the other guy has an All Forge-world Army.. that is dedication! (as opposed to collecting stuff for years)...

... the SM army painting is fine and clean.. but he did not use any shades or washes, and really, only used light drybrushing. the CSM army has all 5 styles of paint in there!....

.. you can tell that the display board IS better than the others, but he used Woodland Scenics products rather than GW terrain kits.. you can tell... (What the heck?)...

so.. not actively stating that the SM was lousy, but certainly touting the others in their "GW HHHobby dedication"

Needless to say.. the SM army did not win.

However the winner (CSM army) did a nice thing later (off the record).. lol

Good point. Every GW store in the US has a Facebook page that posts events for signups. An example:

Sure do!

This one time, in Chicago for Adepticon, my group realized that the Eldar guy forgot his copy of WD with the Night Spinner in it (typical...).

So anyway, we panic, look around the con for anyone who happens to have it. No one does. In desperation, we went to the Downer's Grove Battle Bunker. Inside, I was appalled by how clean it was. And nowhere was the cramped 3x3 board I'm always promised. They had ample amount of playing space and really, really awesome boards. The nerve of them, they probably had at least 4-6 full size boards in there! Anyway, we start looking through the stuff, and, oh God, some jerk from GW came up and dared POLITELY ASK ME IF HE COULD HELP ME FIND SOMETHING! Grrr.

Anyway, I told him that I was good, but my friend was looking for an old copy of WD. "We had him now," I thought. How wrong I was... Not only did they have a copy, but he GAVE it to our guy for free, and then even had the NERVE to wish us good luck at the tournament!

Well, needless to say, we walked from the store in a haze. All these stories we were told, were they untruth spread by edge case neckbeard misanthropes? My friend started sobbing a little. I don't think any GW store has ever been that generous to him. He just sat in the shower back at the hotel crying to himself for hours, muttering about how someone can possibly be so nice to another human being. It was horrifying to have to listen to.

Anyway, there's too much "GW is ebil" out there, and that, other than my friend sobbing in the shower, actually happened, unlike, I suspect, the majority of the stories I hear claimed on here, so I thought I'd share.

Dear lord, yes. I almost exclusively play at our clubs where the average age is about 25-28 but 2 weeks ago, I decided to join a GW tournament with mah Necronz. DEAR LORD. I was the oldest guy at the tournament and the kids immediately gave me that evil stare like "Whatcha doin' here?" and playing wasn't much better. I frequently play at tournaments and thus play pretty fast and those kids...ugh. Complaining about GA being op (not kidding) etc., playing very slow due to checking the BRB all the time and one kid was seriously calling his mom while playing. The only other cool guy was 23, so while playing others, I mostly chatted with him. Winning the tournament didn't make those kids happy either xD Went for a beer with the other dude and invited him to come over to ur club next time. At least something positive.

But dear lord. THE SMELL.
