I find it surprising about the lack of Tau and Eldar finishing in the Top5's in some of the more recent tournaments, namely this one, Duel-con and also the Michigan GT.

Must be a lot of LOS-blocking terrain in those.

I tend to agree with this. The addition of large, LOS blocking terrain makes Eldar play with a little more finesse and highlights the lack of mobile firepower in Broadsides making deployment more important.

With just a few exceptions, most GTs are local affairs so you often see a lot of strange local metas.

Also the rules, terrain, missions, and FAQs have a huge impact on which armies win GTs.

One recent example is the Northern Warlords GT that ruled that “Ignore Cover” does not work on vehicles. So what happens then is that players take Wave Serpent spam and hide them behind a skyshield landing pad for a +2 cover save that no one can do anything about. Most people just check the results and see all of the Eldar placing high, but you do not see what really caused it.

This as an example of how the amount of terrain influences what armies will win. Eldar and Demons love a lot of LOS blocking terrain, and a lot of Tau builds don't.

I just flew back into California today, so I'm still a little rough around the edges. I'll have all of the results posted tomorrow.

For now, check out our Instagram photos of the event!
