It is a shame I have to pay again after buying into it twice before, just to become 'active' again. Should have just made all liscenses 'active'. Am I missing something where this could have been abused and caused harm?

Try Battlescribe then. It's an order of magnitude less powerful, but also very easy to develop/modify files for. If you can deal with nested menus, you can fix the current Battlescribe files to have stats in them.

I've used AB, Battlescribe and EasyArmy.
The games I play now are all included under BattleScribe and Easy Army and what I steer fellow gamers toward.

I always liked AB. You could just sit behind the computer and build armies. Sometimes I'd get a wild hair up my ass and run to the computer to put together a new list I just thought up. Its perfect for tweeking your list without having to do math. Not showing the rules kinda sucks a bit but at least they give you the page numbers.

But I think I'll put BS on my iPad and see what its all about.

Is it worth getting? I mean what does it do exactly? I thought it wasn't getting updated anymore.

How easy is it to update to the new codexes that come out? I see I can use it for Mac. Would I be able to use it on the iPad? If so, if I buy it for the Mac, can I also transfer it over to the iPad?

It's a little tricky because all of the updates to Warhammer and all of the game systems supported through Army Builder are created by a community of volunteers. They generally finish their updates 30 days after the codex releases.

ah so the subscription fee wasn't to fund work going into the updates

It most likely went into the development of software updates for AB, and not for 40k data files.

The subscription fee was to cover costs associated to the development of the application as you were provided free updates while paying the subscription fee. Additional this enables access to the 'AUTO' update feature so that you could update through the application instead of having to manually download the update file and load.

The actual datafiles for ArmyBuilder have NEVER been created, published, developed, or supported by Lonewolf as that would force them to have licenses with the game companies which at least for GW, was refused at the onset.

It's not going to effect me until I upgrade to a new PC

This is something I hear a lot, and I don't understand the sentiment. Even if you switch PC's, it doesn't matter. It won't affect you until AB updates their version to a point where current army files are no longer compatible with the new software.
You will still have your license keys. With those keys, you will be able to reinstall the most current version of the software, based on when your key expired, and download any compatible files. The problem will be in finding those files.

If you make a habit of downloading the file updates and saving them somewhere (a special folder, second hard drive, etc), you can always go back to them later.

I have done this three separate times.

Like others, I'm annoyed that my recently expired license means I will have to shell out even more money to them, due to unfortunate timing. I've spent money on them 2 or 3 separate times, now. That said, I find their output to be amazingly better than the BS outputs I've seen. I'd rather have a $40 AB than a free BS.

My last subscription ran out right before I deployed overseas. When I came back I renewed only for it to run out again the next month. When I asked about this I was shown their stupid policy where licenses run out the month you originally activated it. Had I waited 25 days I would have had a year for the same price I paid for a month. They weren't even willing to listen to my explanation of what happened. I went to Battlescribe for 40K and Easy Army for FOW.

The reason I said I'd wait until a reformat is 2 fold.

1. I no longer have the physical disc that came with 3.3
2. 3.3 is no longer available and my license expired like 2 months before 3.4 came out, so I can't use my license I had with it.

Alas, I predict reformatting within the next 6 months( I go about a year between fresh installs), so it won't be many more updates that I do manually.
