First Turn: Imperial Fists

Deployment:
Imperial Fist Deployment

The librarian deployed with the assault terminators.

Coteaz deployed in the unit of 10 tacticals, and manned the quad gun.

The Fists castled up behind their aegis.

Grey Knight Terminators, and 2 Storm Talons in reserve.

Chaos Space Marine Deployment

Spawn deployed 30.5 inches away from the vindicator
Obliterators and Heldrake in reserve.

Battle Overview

Imperial Fists Turn 1

The Librarian cast null zone, and with the assault terminators moved 6 over the aegis and ran another 6.

Corteaz cast perfect timing and prescience on himself, effecting the quadgun and the 10 tacticals with the missle launcher and plasma gun but rolled double 1 and took a wound.

Coteaz on the Quad gun and the tactical marine missle launcher took aim rerolling hits and ignoring cover, at the havocs and killed the champion and 1 AC.

The Rhino advanced 12 and the vindicator advanced 6.

Chaos Space Marines turn 1

The daemon prince took flight and moved behind the trees. (this was a mistake, i should have hidden him more)

The 3 remaining havocs took aim at the rhino despite night fighting and took off a hull point.

The right plague marines advanced towards the rhino and took off another hull point.

The left plague marines advanced centrally and took a pot shot at the assault terminators and got lucky and killed one.

The spawn with the nurgle lord advanced 12 to sit 10 inches away from the rhino however they failed their charge, getting a 9.

The nurgle bikers moved behind the trees, turbo boosting.

Imperial Fists turn 2

Coteaz cast perfect timing and prescience on the 10 man tactical squad with the missle launcher and the librarian cast null zone.

No thanks to re rolling reserve rolls thanks to the librarians warlord trait, all the imperial fists reserves came in.

The storm talons moved near the havocs, and fired their missle launchers and autocannons, killing all the havocs and gaining FIRST BLOOD.

The vindicator backed up away from the spawn and fired into them hitting 4 but the spawn made 3 lucky 5+ cover saves due to the vindi shooting through its own unit, to only suffer one wound.

Coteaz on the Quad gun, grey knight terminators, and right most 5 man tactical squad fired into the exposed daemon prince, and it took 2 wounds but did not fail a grounding test. (In hindsight vossyvo thought he should have used his storm talons to take out the daemon prince.)

The 10 man tacticals with missle launcher fired (prescience and perfect timing) on the spawn but failed to wound.

The 5 man tacticals fired into the spawn but failed to wound.

Chaos Space Marine turn 2

The obliterators and heldrake arrived from reserve.

The Quad gun intercepts the Heldrake and takes one hullpoint, which the drake regenerates a the end of the turn.

The heldrake vector striked the closest storm talon, got 4 hits and only 1 pen, getting weapon destroyed, destroying the missle launchers and taking it down to 1 HP. It then flamed the only target the assault terminators and killed 1.

The obliterators deep struck behind the vindicator and fired twin linked rapid fire plasma guns at the rear of the vindi wrecking it.

The Daemon Prince vector strikes the right most 5 man tactical squad killing 3 including the multi melta.

The Nurgle Bikers, and both plague marine units advance to fire into the grey knight terminators, killing 3.

The Spawn and Nurgle lord move and charge the remaining two terminators, wiping them out, the nurgle lord killing a champion in a challenge getting poison 4+ on the boon table.

Imperial Fist turn 3

Coteaz cast perfect timing and prescience and the librarian cast null zone.

Coteaz left the quad gun and joined the assault terminators, bringing with him perfect timing and prescience. (My opponent immediately thought casting perfect timing was a mistake as he couldn't activate his force weapon.

The tacticals and quad gun failed to kill any plague marines.

Both stormtalons move 18 inches and fire into the rear of the heldrake, with one rending pen exploding it.

The Assault terminators with the librarian and coteaz, along with both tactical squads move to charge the nurgle lord and spawn.

The assault terminators charged first taking overwatch, the burning brand overwatched and killed a terminator and put a wound on the librarian.

The right tactical squad failed their charge with a roll of 3 inches.

The left tactical squad made the charge and attacked the spawn and did 2 wounds.

The nurgle lord issued a challenge and the librarian refused since neither the librarian and coteaz could activate their force weapons.

The spawn and the nurgle lords powerfist then attacked the terminators however all saves were made.

The terminators attacked back and killed all the spawn. Leaving the nurgle lord by himself.

The heldrake destroyed.

Spawn surounded.

Looking grim for the nurgle lord.

Chaos Space Marine turn 3

The right plague marine advanced near an objective, and wrecked the rhino.

The left plague marine advanced and fired into the quad gun tactical squad and killed a lone plasma gun.

The obliterators advanced around the rocky formation and fired plasma cannons into the tactical squad, one got hot and the other two scattered off.

The Nurgle bikers fired into the two unengaged tacticals killing one, and charging the remaining sergent. The champion issued a challenge and both failed to kill each other.

The Daemon prince charged into the large combat to help out the chaos lord. He rolled a 6 for his daemon weapon, and promptly killed 4 marines and 2 terminators. The remaining marine grenaded the daemon prince and took him down to his last wound.

The nurgle lord issued a challenge and this time coteaz accepted, both striking at initative 1, coteaz wiffed his attacks, and failed to activate his force weapon(rolled an 11) failing to get through toughness 6, and doing only 1 wound. The nurgle lord then kille coteaz, and earning himself (hatred on the boon table).

The librarian moved up and attacked the daemon prince, failing to activate his force weapon (rolled 11), however two poweraxe attacks got through and the daemon prince failed 2 5++ reroll successful saves(null zone) and died.

At the end of the combat with the nurgle lord, the librarian and a marine, the black mace from the daemon prince activated and killed the marine and the librarian earning SLAY THE WARLORD

Daemon Prince joins the fray.

What is left at the end of the combat.

Imperial Fist turn 4

One storm talon moved off the board.

The other storm talon moved 90 degrees and fired into the chaos lord killing him.

The quad gun and tacticals failed to killed one plague marine.

The nurgle bikers verse the lone sergent continued to be a stalemate.

Chaos Space Marine turn 4

The obliterators advanced onto the objective and fired one plasma cannon at the tacticals however it got hot.(this was a mistake as i cannot fire the same weapon twice in a row..but the karma gods swayed all my plasma cannon shots to keep me in check)

The plague marines advanced onto the objective and the objective in the trees turned to to be skyfire. They fired rapid fire plasma into the storm talon and got one pen which cause an immobilised result but also got one gets hot and he died.

The storm talons work.

Imperial Fist turn 5

The other storm talon came on the board and both storm talons fired their assault cannons into the right plague marines and killed two.

The tacticals seeing the dire situation (3 objectives to 1) moved towards the obliterators, however they failed there charge rolling a 5.

The nurgle bikers and lone sergent continued to be a stalemate.

Overview.

Tacticals climb the rock face.

Storm talons surround.

Chaos Space Marine turn 5

The plague marines exploded the stormtalon.

The nurgle bikers finally killed the lone sergent and consolidated.

The obliterators advanced and twin link flamered the marines killing 4

The stormtalon finally wrecked.

Imperial Fists turn 6

The remaining 5 marines charged the obliterators and failed to do anything. He obliterators then killed 4 in reply. The lone marine then elected to fail his moral check and fled a mighty 11 to live and fight another day.

The lone sergent running. So close.

VICTORY TO CHAOS SPACE MARINES

Post Game Analysis
Chaos: It was a game of mixed luck, anything i fired at the stormtalons was horribly unlucky, anything i shot at the terminators managed to kill them. I made a few mistakes during the game:
-I didn't hide my daemon prince well enough on turn 1, and he lost 2 wounds and it could have been worse.
-I should have challenged with my daemon prince when he entered the big combat, to keep him alive. But i would have lost my warlord.

The Daemon prince was a disappointing blaze of glory, charging in dying but exploding everything.

Obliterators taking out the vindi and securing the objective were awesome, even tho they coudn't hit with a plasma cannon. I also probably should have deployed these on the board, as they would have secured me first blood, and superior ranged shooting.

The dud: The Heldrake was unlucky not to down a stormtalon with vector strike, and i thought it could only move 24 inches so i would have flamed the quad gun tacticals if i knew it could move further.

Plague Marines were their usual badass tough as nails self, they walked forward killed some termies, took a ton of fire, and grabbed me an objective each.

Vossy Vo's Thoughts:
To start off with it was a really fun game, its not often these days you get to see a game decided by a big close combat over multiple rounds. It was good to see that it went that way instead of the usual shooting scene, pretty refreshing.

This was my first run with a Marine army since 5th edition, It wasn't a list built around melee or shooting just what I had painted really. I think the biggest decision to make was to either push forward and fight or sit back and shoot. My plan was to get an extra round of shooting in before I did hit combat but it was taken out of my hands with a pretty bad scatter roll on my Grey Knight Terminators deep strike, they went way too far forward into plasma/melta range of the plague marines and nurgle bikers. I ended up losing three of them in the following shooting phase, and been assaulted by the spawn/lord unit quite easily. Lesson learnt that it's best that they start on the board in a melee focused game.

I had a few bits of bad luck that cost me in the main combat. Dropping 2 wounds and a failed Look out sir on my terminators/libby to 3 Str 4 hits cost me my warlord in the end and the small marine squad that didn't make it (rolled 3 inches for assault, needed a 4 I believe) had the Sergeant in it that was going to take the challenge from the Chaos Lord to protect my terminators while they dealt with the spawn. A few failed force weapon activations also hurt, I've had good luck with these sort of things in the past so I guess it was due haha . I really missed the Grey Knight Terminators in this combat, if they had been alive, at even half strength it should have seen me through.

Things got desperate towards the end. I'd lost way too many troops in the main combat and my only chance was focusing my fire to wipe one of the plague marine units off their objective then hope my 10 Tacs could somehow shift the Oblits off their objective. It was a long shot and didn't work in the end.

Victory to chaos!

Things I would have done different:
-Deployed the GK Terminators on the table, somewhere in and around my vindicator, coteaz should have been with them for Prescience/Force weapon activations, while the terminators did hammer hand duty.
-I wasn't too upset with my choice to take out the Havocs with my Stormtalons, but I probably should have used them to focus the Daemon Prince down early on.
-I forgot that the Stormtalons could go into Hover mode, and that they shoot BS 5 at ground targets. I could have just shot quite effectively from the backfield instead of flying off the board/towards the nurgle plasma units, which had sky-fire from the mysterious objective so were quite effective at hurting the talons.

Unit of the Match: Stormtalons, fist time using these. I didn't quite utilize their full ability but they still proved the most effective units on the table. I've heard mixed reviews about them but they get the thumbs up from me.
The dud: Grey Knight Terminators / Vindicator, mainly through my bad use of both.

Good game in the end! Nice baptism of fire for my Imperial Fists!

So i couldnt tell where coteaz was for most of the game, or why perfect timing was useful on him (i guess he was with the tactical squad on the quad gun). But he's not allowed to join SM units as GK aren't battle brothers (he definitely joined the assault terminators later).

I will edit it to make it clearer. He was in the tacticals manning the quad gun, perfecting timing never really did anything, and then joined the assault terminators.

Damn we both thought GK and SM were battle brothers, o well. Thanks for the spot.

Thanks ,

My nurgle lord didn't actually do that much, he just got lucky to survive coteaz, and got lucky with the burning brand. I should have issued a challenge with my daemon prince instead of the nurgle lord so he would have survived in that big combat.

It was a heaps fun battle, we both played pretty aggressively, lots of shenanigans, always makes for a good battle. Now if only i can get my heldrake to do something.

Yes looks like it was played wrong, i assumed all marines are bb, we were in a bit of a rush.

Also can someone confirm if the stormtalon can shoot its assault cannon 360 degrees. I was searching for its rules and came across a few posts saying it could, i hadn't thought about using it that way until i saw them. Looking at the model id have to agree. Is this how it should be played?

Lovely report. Really very well presented.

I found the combination of actual photographs and the graphic over-heads to be very useful, as good as an overhead photograph of the table-top.

Will keep an eye out for more of these.

Thanks, i really like the combination of the graphic plus the photos, takes a bit of extra time to put together but hopefully it is worth it.

I have updated vossy vo's post game blurb.

Thanks, yea the drake turned out really well. I am looking forward to more battle reports to show off my army. There is no good photos of the obliterators which is a shame, will have to get them in the next one.

If the daemon prince died, wouldn't the black mace not proc at the end of the phase?

You measure 3" from the bearer of the mace. If the bearer is no longer on the tabletop....
