Subject: A minor difference on a 1000pt SM list, what are your opinions?
|

I'm painting up a 1000pt Vanilla list at he moment and am torn with a single item after pretty muh sorting the list in another thread. Here goes, the contested bit is in bold.
Librarian - presience and machine curse
10 man tac squad - HB, Melta, PW, Rhino.
10 man tac Squad - ML, flamer, Razorback or Drop pod
5 man Scout - 4 sniper rifles, ML and camo cloaks
Stormtalon, skyhammer missiles
5 man dev squad, 4 ML
Thunderfire Cannon
The idea would be to leave the libby with the Dev squad to make use of the presience power (machine curse is for anti landraider but It may change as I'm hoping 4 ML wih presience could glance ot to death), put the scouts on or near an obj and drop pod in he tac squad onto the obj and hold, unless this changes and they are needed elseware.
Or
Same as above but combat squad the tac squad leaving he ML back and push both mech transport in together.
What do we think?

I think that combat squadding is good either way you go. Leave the missile behind for more gunline support. If you pod in, thats cool, but a razorback going up with the rhino works too. I take it the libby is with the Devs?
Consider dropping the power weapon from the 10 man tac squad, and swap the melta and flamer to focus the squads a bit more.

Yep Libby with the Devs for the re-roll of failed hit and wounds on the 4 ML.
It was a typo with the tac squad weapons but I can see the benefit of swapping them as well as going wih a razorback and adding an ML to the gun line.
I put the PW just in case of coming up against another SM player, but if going for a gun line would it be best to drop it and take an extra scout wih sniper rifle? Would it be best for the sgt to take a bolter rather than a chainsword and pistol?

Sorry to say, but C:SM libbies can't use the divination table. (Sucks hardcore).
I would swap the devs for another TFC and put MM, combi meltas on your tacts.

You have one melta to take on the AV14 with. Probably going to be a tough task at the very best.

As an idea then thinking of the 2 tactical squads I could go with...
10 man tac, HB, flamer, rhino.
10 man tac, melta, multi melta, drop pod.
Or
10 man tac, HB, flamer, Rhino
10 man tac, Melta, ML, Meltabomb, Razorback
Drop the pod in by an armour and blast away, could also add the libbt with machine curse, bang, quarter of their points gone!

I like the first pair better, though I'm not big on HB/Flamer combos (long range + template) unless you're combat squadding. If you're not squadding, the flamer is useless for 75% of your tac squads time on the board (until they get assaulted basically).
I'm a fan of pods. Not such a fan of rhinos and razorbacks (they give up first blood quickly since they can just be glanced to death by small arms fire).

I would drop the scouts (snipers).
I tried scouts in several games and most of the time, they didn't do much.
In one game, they manged to pin down a foot-slogging elite CC unit that was neat, but looking back I don't think they are worth the points.
I would make one tactical anti-horde/infantry, with PG and PC (ML usually not performing that well compared to plasma).
The other anti-tank with MG and MM.
If you are worried about AV 14, you could give your Razorback a twin-linked LC for extra punch.
I would not put one tact squad in a drop pod, I think they would get focused down too easily. Perhaps a sternguard squad with combi-melta that can quickly pop armour before they die or a dreadnough with MM.

Ok, thanks for the advice, decided to drop the ML for a MM because I already have 5 ML in the list. Then change the razorback for a rhino so all the troops can travel in it. PG put in place of the flamer as with a gun line I'm not sure it will get much use.
Librarian -
10 man tac squad - HB, PG, Rhino.
10 man tac Squad - MM, MG, Rhino.
5 man Scout - 4 sniper rifles, ML and camo cloaks
Stormtalon, skyhammer missiles
5 man dev squad, 4 ML

How do you get the to re-roll failed to wound?
The pimaris power in divination says you only get to re-roll failed to hit:
Prescience is a blessing that targets a single friendly unit within
12". Whilst the power is in effect, the target unit can re-roll all
failed To Hit rolls.

Prescience was just a massive error on my part, alredy pointed out a couple replies up as I can't take it anyway.

I am pretty sure you can, from what I remember about the rules of SM librarians, they can choose their powers from the codex or take powers from the rule book (except biomancy). But don't take my word for it (I currently forgot my SM codex at my parents house when I was visiting, so you have to check the rules yourself).
What sam918 said about not taking divination, he was referring to C: SM (Chaos Space Marines).

The scouts seem out of of place... Maybe use the points to add more marines to the dev squad?
C:SM is Codex: Space Marines, btw.

Thanks for the info about the libby powers, thats great.
The scouts are in as I've had great success with them, plus the scenario we are playing is 1000pts no changes between games (think the 1000pts is all you have trapped on a planet), so I will be coming up against SM, Tau, SW, dark eldar and orks.
