Food for a Giant Fenrisian Wolf

Hi Dakka,

I have been painting and collecting GW mini's for about 8 years now.
I collected mostly WHF models and only recently decided to get into W40K with a friend of mine from work and 2 of his buddies that have been playing with him before. None of them played since the early 5th edition rules so 6th was new to them but not as new for me as I have never played 40K.

Anyway we have played 3-4 times in the last month 2vs2 and now we are getting 2 more guys to play against us at the end of this month.

One alliance is BA, SW and BA and the other is 2xCSM and Necrons.

We set some rules as all of us are very new to the game so the first one was:
- No flyers (one of the guys has a hell drake and last 2 games were a pain for me)
- 1000pts per player.

My list goes like this:

HQ: Rune Priest (105 pts)
Jaws of the World Wolf, Murderous Hurricane, Wolf Tail Talisman

Elites: Dreadnought (140 pts)
Drop Pod, Extra Armour, Plasma Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon-Heavy Flamer

Lone Wolf (125 pts)
2x Fenrisian Wolf, Mark of the Wulfen, Melta Bombs, Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer.

Troops: 10x GH (170pts), Melta gun, plasma pistol, Rhino.
8x GH (135pts), Plasma gun, plasma pistol.
7x GH (105pts), Plasma Gun.

Heavy Support: 6xLong Fangs Pack (160pts), Heavy Bolter, Lascannon, 2x ML, Plasma Cannon, Squad Leader.

I am looking for any kind of feedback you guys can give me.

Cheers

The Twilight Zone

The rune priest does not need the WTT, you only get one chance to deny a psychic power per the FAQ, and the runic weapon denies on a 4+ in a 24" bubble, the talisman only works on a 5+ if the priest or his unit is target. Consider getting a chooser of the slain instead, or terminator armor or just run stock.

The dreadnaught can toss the extra armor, it is rarely needed. Plasma and heavy flamer are good for the opponents you face.

The lone wolf can toss mark of the wulfen and melta bombs. Short of a land raider or monolith the thunder hammer can do the job, and you would be using that in combat anyways instead of the mark.

Since your 10 man squad gets a second weapon for free, grab another melta gun. Conisder wolf standard and mark for the squad. Plasma pistols are generally not worth it on anything but an HQ, and even then questionable. Not for a melta squad, anyways.

Try to max each grey hunter squad to ten to get another special weapon. Or make one squad 10 man, another 5 man.

I figure you built your fangs out of the box, but mixing special weapons is generally bad. If you can swap, get them to be all the same, or 2 of each. Plasma cannons are good against MEQ and necrons, heavy botlers are good for cheap, lascannons for armor and missiles for all purpose. Most do 5 missiles, but 3 missiles 2 las, 3 missiles 2 plasma, or all bolters, or bolters plasma. You can split fire, but you want your unit to split between the targets they are intended for. Having lots of different weapons means the squad can do everything poorly and nothing well. better to do most things well and a few things poorly.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Hey Guys thanks for the feedback.

Dr. Serling great feedback on the GH squads. You are completely correct in saying that I built the Long Fangs out of the SM Devastators kit. I actually thought that you would get 2 weapons of each type, which turned out to be true except for the missiles. Only one grrrrr.
The manager at GW told me that I would have to buy a separate SM Tactical Squad to do that. I looked on ebay to kit out all of my LF's with the ML but I was too eager to put them together and paint them.

So far they have been painted, but their performance has been completely negligible as they got decimated by the HellDrake twice so far.

Anyway here is the list again.
HQ: Rune Priest (110 pts)
Jaws of the World Wolf, Murderous Hurricane, Chooser of the Slain

Elites: Dreadnought (125 pts)
Drop Pod, Plasma Cannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon-Heavy Flamer

Lone Wolf (105 pts)
2x Fenrisian Wolf, Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer.

Troops:
10x GH (215pts), Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard, 2x Melta Gun, Rhino.
10x GH (185pts), 2x Plasma gun.
7x GH (105pts), Plasma Gun.

Heavy Support:
6xLong Fangs Pack (160pts), 3x ML, 2x Plasma Cannon, Squad Leader.

I might be deviating from the topic but does my Rune priest go twice in each shooting turn with his 2 powers that I have chosen, as the codex says choose 2 of these powers.

What impact would a Wolf Guard have on the GH squad if I have chosen him to lead them?

Cheers

Your RP only gets one psychic shooting attack per turn, so you'd have to pick between JotWW and MH on any given turn.

A wolf guard added to your GH squad would up the LD to 9 (which can help to get counterattacks), but would put you below 10 GH in two of your squads, meaning you'd lose that free 2nd special weapon. A lot of times people will give WG a combi-weapon to compensate.

Also, you appear to be missing the 35 points necessary for the drop pod with the dreadnought. I think you're already 5 over, so the DP would put you at 1040.

Your Rune Priest would do well with some better protection, a suit of runic or terminator armor would do well.

Dreadnoughts will be glanced to death by anything with krak grenades most likely, I don't like dreads that aren't rifleman in 6th. Or ironclad, but we don't get front armor 13 dreads as SW, so I would drop him imo.

He is warp charge 1 so he only gets to make one psychic power a turn, period. Even if he did he can only fire one 'gun' a turn and a witchfire power counts as a gun fired.

Wolf guard would give them leadership 9... and that's it really. He can have good weaponry and has 2 attacks base but if you do it in a squad thats in a rhino you'd have to drop your free special weapon.

Thunderhammer on a lone wolf is useless, you're paying 5 points over a powerfist for concussive and since he's I1 for unwieldy it's really not doing much. If you wanted to spend the extra 5 points get a chainfist, 2d6 armor pen roll is quite useful, you can send him after the land raiders.(lol) I dont' find that they're really that good at 1k points unless your opponents have units you want to lock up for a long time.

If it were up to me, I'd up the 7 man squad to 10, give them mark, a banner, and a rhino, then put the melta squad in a pod and suicide pod them onto critical objectives or to kill a dangerous unit and tie up your opponents resources while your other squads drive up the field in the rhinos.(during objective placement, put some of your objectives in the midfield area so your rhino squads can get map dominance in the middle while still scoring objectives. Having an expensive troop squad sit in the backfield is usually not the best plan.

Something like

Rune Priest, TDA 120

Lone Wolf, TDA, SS, Chainfist 85

Grey Hunters x 10 2 melta banner mark pod 215
Grey Hunters x 10 2 Plasma banner mark rhino x 220 2

Long Fangs 5 missile 140

1k on the dot.

Thanks for the input DiabloSpawn33.

I think that your list seems like a good idea.
Max out on GH's and go for the objectives

My only reason for including the dread was to play an actual game with it. I havent had many games with vehicles so I am just trying to get some more experience with it.
In general I only play once a month with the group of friends that play 40k.

Anyway I havent had a win in a long time and the Chaos forces have been making me look stupid, so its time for sweet revenge.
