Hi all,

So at the end of September is the annual NWG tournament here on the Emerald Isle. While a tournament still, the big emphasis of the NWG tournament and how it differs from other tournaments over here is that there is a huge focus on the hobby, and not just the game. It is a 5 game tournament with 20pts max. for each game, however there are 50pts to be scored for painting, which is broken down into different catagories such as having your base colours, having a certain amount of conversions, and having a display board, for instance. As such a disclaimer needs to be made that some of my choices for the list below may be influenced by this slightly.

The tournament itself also uses some home brewed missions. The big impact these have on list building is that (a) there is no Big Guns, (b) there is no Scouring, and (c) Purge the Alien is done using old style kill points, where Troops are worth 1 and everything else is worth 2 or 3. There are also 4 home brew secondaries and each player draws a card for each game dictating what their secondary mission is. It can be the kill the most expensive enemy HQ IC, to kill the most expensive enemy unit, to kill more enemy units than are killed of yours, or to walk a scoring unit off of the enemy deployment line. So straight away you can see that there a much bigger emphasis on Troops, and a bigger incentive for your HQs to be survivable. Also First Blood isn't an issue. For full rulespack if interested, go here.

Anyway some background on the list. I had built a different list entirely including either a Crimson Hunter or a Nightwing for air support, but looking at the field now it looks like the tournament meta is going to be very AV12 flyer light, so I am trying to build a list without any flyers, as without enemy heavy flyers they are somewhat of a liability. So I've come down to two lists but would like some feedback and discussion before I buy the last unit I need (as I can only really afford one at the moment).

Farseer
Eldar Jetbike, Singing Spear

5x Warlocks
Eldar Jetbikes, 3x Singing Spears

Baron Sathonyx

5x Dire Avengers

In Transport 1

10x Guardians
In Transport 2

10x Guardians
In Transport 3

5x Kabalite Warriors
In Transport 4

3x Windrider Jetbikes

7x Warp Spiders

3x War Walkers

6x Bright Lances

Transport 1: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields
Transport 2: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields
Transport 3: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields
Transport 4: Venom with Splinter Cannon and Grisly Trophies

Farseer
Eldar Jetbike, Singing Spear

5x Warlocks
Eldar Jetbikes, 4x Singing Spears

6x Dire Avengers
In Transport 1

10x Guardians
In Transport 2

10x Guardians
In Transport 3

3x Windrider Jetbikes

3x Windrider Jetbikes

8x Warp Spiders

7x Warp Spiders

[b]3x War Walkers

6x Bright Lances

Transport 1: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields
Transport 2: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields
Transport 3: Wave Serpent with Twin-Linked Scatter Laser and Holo-Fields

Both lists function similarly and as far as I can see have the means to handle most opponents. There are 5 Troops choices in each and minimal units in other slots to give away excess Kill Points. The toss up mainly is between the Baron and the second unit of Warp Spiders. The Spiders add a tonne of more firepower, however are 2 easy KPs. On the other hand in the Baron list there is a bit less firepower but those 2KPs along with those in the Seer Council become much harder to get. The Venom and Blaster Warriors add a bit more punch than the second unit of Jetbikes as well but can still just hide to grab objectives later. Grisly Trophies is to allow the Warlocks to re-roll their Ld8 Psychic checks, which I've been having some problems with.

Regarding the influence from painting scores, I had considered a list with a 4th Serpent, but to match my others that means it wouldn't be converted and so would only have converted Farseer, Warlocks and Spiders. To get full painting points I will need another conversions, opportunities of which arise from the Spiders, Baron, and Venom.

Anyway, please comment and help me make a winner

Hey, looks like we are heading to the same event. I like both lists but the Baron can be super useful for the seer council if they get Fortune he can tank wounds with a re roll 2++ and the poison weapons from the Venom and warriors would be helpful to take on MCs. Plus as you said some cool conversion chances.

Hey Chalkybot thanks for the feedback, I recognise your username from the w-ired forum alright.

Yeah that is certainly the list I am leaning toward anyway.

I like the second list, mine is very similar and ive yet to lose with it. I personally like fire prisms instead of war walkers but think they are basically the same unit.

You can drop the 6th DA and get a cannon for your jetbikes, id try to find points for another cannon for the other squad as well.

A small seer council is a good idea if you aren't getting 2 seers to ensure fortune.

If you go with the first list, I personally like the second seer as mentioned before to guarantee fortune, it is an expensive squad and really needs it for survivability, getting the protect warlock spell is vital as well, but not required.

I never take Cannons on my 3 man Jetbike squads as their purpose is to stay in reserves as long as possible and then hide out of LOS until turn 5 when they objective grab. It would just be a waste of points.

Of all my games so far I've only lost the Seer Council once, and I've only managed to roll Fortune in a single game so far. Much like regular Jetbikes I've found you can use their mobility to keep them from grevious harm most of the time, the trick of course being able to identify what they can and can't handle. The Baron helps a lot as well by giving the squad 2+ cover, being able to tank with his 2++, and giving them Hit and Run meaning if necessary I can hide from dangerous shooting in CC. In the meta I'm expecting for this tournament as well I expect cover to still be good most of the time.

That being said, and while I don't think the second Seer is necessarily mandatory, I wouldn't mind having a second Seer, but at such a low points value I'm finding it hard to shave points. It was hard enough to fit in what I did already. Any suggestions on that front? The Council is either list is to be more of an annoyance for the opponent than a true deathstar, as it is still big enough of a threat that he will either throw too much at it or not enough and let it roam free to its own machinations. It's worked well in this regard so far, with some games it not doing much but keeping focus away from the true terrors of the list, and in others winning it single handedly. With Troops being so important I'd rather not skimp on even more of them too.

there really isnt much room to add anything, your council is small enough that it probably doesn't require fortune, mine is 10 strong and is a good death star. but I also play 2k pts

Ah ok, I thought you were talking about my list specifically, not generally.

Thanks for the feedback Admiral.
