Right, I am about ready to start my first WHFB army.
I've had a look for update rumours etc but nothing comes up that seems to sure so I wanna check here
Are any updates probable in the near future? I've got a hard back 8th Ed. Rulebook from a mate, is that due an update any time soon?
Army wise, top of my list now is Skaven, is it looking like they will be getting new rules shortly, or a bunch of new models?
Lizardmen are next on the list and I know they had a recent update so I assume they are safe?
Then the "hit list" gets unclear so is anyone else suspected to get new stuff?
Basically I wanna start an army that won't need changing/altering anytime soon but I also don't know the best sources yet for games workshop rumours etc

Generally speaking it's a good idea to ask WHFB questions in the WHFB forums
|
Note to the reader: my username is not arrogance. No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS. |

Rumor is june 2014. But that's too far off to be reliable IMO.

Nothing i've heard of. I hear Brets are next.
Lizardmen are next on the list and I know they had a recent update so I assume they are safe?
Yup update before this one was 2008 so that's about the time this new book will last us.
Basically I wanna start an army that won't need changing/altering anytime soon but I also don't know the best sources yet for games workshop rumours etc
Well lizards are 100% safe but Skaven are from 2009 which is just a year newer than the old lizard book, and they are popular so it's unlikely they'll be left alone forever like WE.

Maybe I'll roll with Lizardmen for a bit in that case. I've had a few instances with 40k where I started or was about to start a new army then "here, new models", which might have altered how I configured the army, so wanna dodge similar things happening in WHFB for a while

Welcome to the world of WHFB.
The new edition of Warhammer Fantasy is expected to land Summer 2014. Although normally a year is too far off to predict rumours normally, GW have released new editions of 40k and WHFB in a regular four year cycle (all summer-time releases) for a while now. WHFB 8th edition's 4 years ends next summer. I really don't think it's worth waiting. You have a whole year to get to know and play 8th edition.
As for armies, Skaven, being a 7th edition book, will be redone some time in the not-so-distant future. Current rumours have practically confirmed Dark Elves to be the next WHFB release and suggest that Skaven may be the last book to get redone, which will probably occur after 9th edition lands. So, while Skaven isn't as "safe" as Lizards, for example, you'll probably get a lot of games in with the current book.
Sadly (though it does depend on how you look at it), your army will almost definitely require a tweak - sometimes more -after the new edition lands, but that's the same for every army, so it's impossible to avoid, short of owning every option available in the book.

They usually don't redo vastly huge swaths of models. It takes too much time/resources and would piss off all the people who have armies.
So metal models might be made plastic. And a "handful" of new units added from scratch.

Xiorell wrote: Opps, sorry, wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing lol No worries In answer to your question, there were several rumors from Harry on Seer that "Big changes" were coming for the way Fantasy was released. Some fairly strong rumors have revolved around how poorly Fantasy is selling--which has led the development team to either do a pretty big overhaul to the system or slowly shelf the game. So, I guess the reason I mention that is--it's pretty darn hard to tell what the new system will do to your army at this point. The changes coming are ( IMHO) perhaps the most volatile we've seen in awhile. As a vet of GW product purchasing over the years--I would say just buy what you want, as really it's a guessing game what's going to happen in new editions--and if you think too much on the subject, you'll suffer decision paralysis to the point of never really collecting a full army . In that case just don't buy finecast, lately all the new models released with a new book are finecast replacements or brand new units.

I do hope they don't shelf it, while I might only now be looking at starting an Army WHFB has always been of interest to me since I was a kid!
I totally agree with the whole "don't over think which one to pick" thing, prime example of what I wanted to avoid though - Space Marines. Luckily I avoided it but, I was just about to start building my vanilla SM army (only got one tac-squad so far see, SWs player mainly) and then all the stuff about SM updates lands, I'd have been so pissed if I'd spent money on SMs THEN heard about the impending new stuff lol

Lizardmen would be a very safe army to get as they just got an update.
If you want to avoid Finecast, you should be able to pick up some of the older metal models on E-bay. And plenty of new models are plastic as well.
Skaven are due an update, along with an obligatory nerf. they are quite powerful at the moment(mostly due to their old book's interaction with new rules) so you could be in for a nasty shock when the new book drops.
Any edition change will require some minor adjustments but it will rarely require a total revamp of your army.
Build a balanced army without any extreme tactics or builds(IE: spamming one type of model or tactic) and you will be fine.
