Have you tried to use hot, boiling water?
Put the clear plastic in for a few seconds, so it gets soft, and then pull it over your mold.
That "should" work
Good Luck

Thanks again for many more ideas.

Big H. I don't tend to get invited to kid's parties these days.
I don't think we have a heatgun, hence going straight to the FIRE. I'll investigate.

Ruglud. They're all Robby in a way... I couldn't have named the other one off the top of my head.

Thanks York'. I will get back to the statue piece, but Robby has a deadline that's much nearer.
As for out of the box thinking, just look at the stream of ideas we have here from everyone, for one problem. This is why I hang about DDakka.

Graven'. Yeah, those do look close to the shape. Again, it's buying more things I don't need.

Thanks Klaus. I didn't try boiling water, I wouldn't have expected it to be hot enough to mould the plastic. I'll investigate when I revisit this problem.

Yes, so the "clear" dome is on hold for a bit. I "need" to move on to other things before throwing it out the window... Nah, it's not really that bad, but I do need to crack on with this project to get it done on time: I still have to paint it.
Once it's done and painted, if I have time I'll try the dome again.

Therefore, I have fitted the "mould" to the model. My estimate of the required shape was a "little" off and required removal of a lot of material... and the whole top and back of the dome... and a fair amount of the sides too.
I then used a small ball of foil to re-make the rear of the dome. You can still see the join in the finished piece, but I think it's flush; primer will show it up if not.
Then it all needed some more carving and sanding to get to the shape you see below.

It's not perfect, in shape or fit, but it's as good as it's getting at the moment.

I've also magnetised it at the rear, just so it's doesn't easily fall off.

I'm now going to make the fiddly bits and get it primed and painted asap
Then, I may revisit the clear dome.

And a start on the details:

The 3rd photo showing where I have carved away at the balls for the waist and "mouth" area details. I used a combination of engraving and filing bits for the Dremel for this.
May thin down that front piece of the waist a little.

The bits on the sides were made from a single piece of round sprue: I sawed the lines around the whole and then cut it in half. Sawing in half first didn't work as well.
The front "face" parts are a plastic rod, half a plastic tube and some pieces of plasticard cut to shape.

Now to find a way to make some of the tesla-like coil things (maybe using the Dremel as a lathe), and his radar-alike setup. I have found rings for his "ears" though.

Nice! That,s bringing him to life now he has features and

I know if means buying something, but there's a variety of different sized jewellery beads that would fit the bill as the gyros.

Like the 'fake' helmet, eminently suitable if you find no quick solution for the clear version.

Thanks Shas'. I do whatever is necessary.

Thanks Fango. Painting soon.

Thanks MT. I have many beads already, however, see below for gyros...

Thanks Gits'.

Done and primed.
A little tidy up required of some rough edges, but painting will begin.

Have to get him finished this week, thankfully it's a fairly simple paint job ... except for the NMM reflective glass dome... There's a first time for everything...

Thanks MT, Gits', York'.
You're a bad man, Gits'. I'm sure it's just to angle of the photo and won't be apparent in the following... Right?!

As I suspected, the painting wasn't that "in depth". So no further pip photos, straight to "done", and just in time so no clear dome at this time; we may well see this chap again once I have some clear resin to hand.

I didn't fully explain myself in the build process, I realise, and I did do a few unique things. Here's a quick run through before the final photos:

The rings on his "ears" are metal rings a found (in my box of "rings and disks"). They were identical and had a gap in them.
I opened the gap,
wedged in a piece of paperclip,
wrapped the join in fine wire,
and soldered it all together and filed it neat.

I did mention making the "frill" around his "neck" (there's a lot of relating body parts to parts of him, without being able to just label things directly). Keeping it separate by sculpting it over cling film around the neck and then cutting the grooves off the model.

The spinning gyros about his "idea light-bulb" are coils of wire, coiled at 90o to give a 3D shape. To represent the original intersecting disks at 90o .

The last thing to mention is the Tesla coils at the bottom of his "face".
I turned these with my Dremel by placing pieces of sprue in the Dremel chuck and resting my razor saw (and/or file) on it as it spun. 7 or 8 attempts to produce these 4 and the base of the "idea light-bulb" (same but in a cone shape).

As to the painting:
The body is all Humbrol Metalcote paint. Darker gunmetal in the recesses and polished steel across the bulk of the model. Buffed up nice and shiny.

And the dome is my first attempt at the NMM landscape reflection technique.
I probably could have gone a bit more desaturated with the brown to give a more "glass" look to it. Other than that, fairly pleased with the result as a stand in for a clear dome.

And here are the final photos... for now.

Better views of the legs and some close-ups of the "head" and dome (note reflection of the ring):

I can now get on with the other "current projects"...

Great stuff. Impressed with the reflection on the dome, does the job nicely.

I'd have maybe added a hint of blue to the metals, but that's just me. You see him in a variety of finishes, plus colour correction, so for me it's a matter of which you prefer.

Good job

Nice robot. Geez, it must have been 40 years since I saw that movie... Leslie Nielsen before the Naked Gun movies...

Say, how about a photo or two of Robby ( its name IIRC) next to a ruler or something to indicate scale. I'm having a hard time judging it from the photos.

Also, an excuse to get more photos.

The only criticism is emphasize his 'eyes' a bit more. A stronger contrast between them and the cones they are mounted on. Perhaps paint the "irises"?

Oh yeah, I did neglect to include a scale shot. See below.

Thanks Joe

Thanks MT. I looked at many reference photos of NMM models, and of mirrored domes to get an idea of what was required.
I hadn't really thought about doing anything to the metal colour, I just used these metalcote paints and polished it up. I don't know how the polishing would work if I adulterated those paints, maybe an experiment for the future.

Thank you Gitsplitta.

Thanks Red'.
I can't actually say I've seen the movie... hmm. ...and 40 years, that's before me too.
I didn't realise those are the eyes, I may have put more work into those if I had. Next time maybe.

Scale shot. He's probably larger than you expect:

I didn't intend to build him so large, but that's how he came out from the starting parts I found.

Thanks Graven' and Fango. Glad to hear it.

Back to progress on the statue piece... and this is just work for what I'm going to build my actual idea around...

I fixed the broken hand and added a piece of plastic tube to allow a flag to be inserted.

and started on sculpting the boots for the statue.
A thin layer of milliput over the plaster and then adding detail in layers.
I made the boots just high enough that I can carry one over the break onto the legs on the base. That leg still needs the trousers sculpted on, I just wanted to show you the process and that particular detail.
Straps and toecap detail in GS, Looks a bit odd at the moment but should come together with paint.
Channelling a bit of Judge Dredd with those boots, rather than 40K, but it is intended to be the Emp'ror...the ultimate "judge" as it were...

Just a cape to add to the torso and leg sections (will keep bare chest for heroic purposes). Then I may be able to get on with the actual model...

Just as a reminder to those browsing, this is for the LoER terrain contest, here on DDakka.
It's open to all, head on over and join in.

Thanks Joe'. Progress, such as it is...

Added a cape, starting from an old superglue tube (could not open the tube up for the life of me, only really needed one side for a scaffold) and covered with milliput.
I made it less cape-like (and therefore more statue-like) by giving it a flat bottom and a support piece between the near side and the statue's leg.
Continued it up and over the shoulders on the torso piece, and finished it with a length of chain (the only piece of plastic on this so far).

While I was at it, I extended the hair on the head into a ponytail and continued that onto the torso over the cape.

And then finished the basing with my usual mix, but with added pathway.
the slabs were made from plaster that I squashed between a piece of glass (my putty palette) and a piece of plastic, to give a thin, flat piece that I then cut into squares...
...which were then placed and broken onto the base to form a broken path where the statue fell.

The head will end up on a shrine of sorts behind the barricade that I'm about to start on...

Thanks York'. More of the same is always welcome when it's praise.

Thanks Graven'. With more effort I can produce whole versions. But yes, a superman would be possible from this.

That is also true, MT.

If I have an attempt that comes out looking ... hideous, I'll keep that in mind, Theo.

And now I have started on the barricade and deciding what details I'm going to add.

So far I've used a couple of bits from OMN to build the basis of the barricade, a broken wooden middle (and some scattered wooden pieces), and what will become a temporary shrine for the head.

I've also included the Dire Avenger I'm building for Nerdy comp' for scale purposes.

There will be battle damage added for one thing, Sandbags, ammo stashes, and a load of "signs of life" stuff.

Still plenty of time to get in on either contest.

And the smaller details have begun*

*thereby implying that there will be more...

Used a piece of "wood" to support the head, but mounted it at a slight angle to show that it is just resting in place as a heavy lump of rock.

Around the head I've added some candles, some of which have been knocked over when the barricade was damaged.
Just lengths of plastic rod, some with GS flames, and the knocked over ones with a piece of wire drilled into the tops.

I had to press-mould the skull for the gothic thing (another OMN item), as the ones I have were too bit to fit in. So moulded the face and then gently pushed it into the hole while it was still soft.

GS strap for the gun, but possibly not the final position; not glued in place as it'll be a bit fragile to be placed there, even if it fits there so well. May well make a dedicated mount for it somewhere else.

Found a use for OMN's teapot and used a piece of a OMN lamp (previously chopped up for another project) to make a hotplate. Just added a couple of bent wires for legs.
And a couple of bottles for flavour.
And a battery pack to power it.

And I added a spike that has penetrated the barricade as the first step of the battle damage.
Actually drilled a hole an poked it through as the simplest way to add it.

Now the weather has cooled down somewhat, I can focus on doing things.
