Hi all,

I'm a little unsure of how to paint the chosen guys from dark vengence.

I have mephiston red, ceramite white, screamer pink, emperors children, some metal colors and abbadon black and blue, and brown.

I want them to stand out from the dark angels. At first I tried bluish black, on a sample piece (I've inherited some horribly botched marines that we've reprimed - they're gross but fun to experiment with), but that didn't contrast well with the dark green.

I want bright colors, so I'm definitely priming with grey.

What's a good combination of what I have for a reddish theme? Maybe layer the screamer pink on to the mephiston red? Then use bone white and some black and yellow for some details?

Not looking for anything perfect - just wanted to run these ideas past experienced painters to make sure I'm not brewing a disaster.

You got a couple of colours to pick:
- armor plate,
- armor trim,
- cloaks
- horns
- weapons

If you want a bright paintjob, pick a bright (light red comes to mind) colour for the armor plate. Go for metal colour for the armor trim and weapons. Some beige/brown paint for the horns. Cloaks left to pick. Consider applying a wash as well, to bring out the recesses.

When looking for inspiration for a model, I often use Google Image search to see what others have done.

Nevermind the use or airbrush and non-GW colours, you can do a similar colour scheme and painting order with GW paints and brushes:

Looks like you are new to the scene. You've got hardly any posts and a very small selection of colors--welcome to dakka!

dark-blue/black will contrast well with dark angels, depending on what metallic trim you choose. Dark blue with lightning are the colors of the night lords. Another choice could be word bearers. mix red and brown, then add your red, and then emperors children/white into your red for highlights. Another point of contrast is the finish. Gloss vs matte finish can also be a way of distinguishing x from y.

screamer pink is not a way to go with the red you have. Maybe as an undercoat? the problem is that the colors you listed are.... welllll........ terrible on account of the fact that you don't have shades a step up or a step down. Adding white/black to your paint WILL NOT WORK the same way as just gettign the right shade. Mixing brighter/darker colors is a good way of getting different shades. For instance, if I want to brighten up my yellow, I don't use white, I use screaming skull. same thing for brightening up my reds, I try to avoid using white since it will just turn it pink instead of making it brighter, so instead I'll use a yellow/orange, bright pinks or bright purples, but the specific choice of color depends on the overall palette, and what color is on the bottom, if you've got brown, going up to red, a sudden purplish red for highlight is nnnnnot going to look right.

my advice is get the right shades so you're not mixing colors. Color mixing yields inconsistent results, and often with incorrect shades. I have an entire army of space marines, where at best only marines in batches of about 5 seem to resemble eachother, and no two vehicles are quite the same shade.

If you want a good contrast, try the iron warriors scheme. You'd have to buy a yellow (presuming you have silver). Although that might just be my bias showing through. Lol.

problem here are a lot of straight yellow and black lines. Might not be the best place to start.
