Ahh right, I see what you mean there.
Tbh when i prime my mini's I'm not worried about 100% coverage with the colour, as the primers made up of two parts; etching agent, and pigment (plus thinners but we'l ignore those for now)
The etching agent is whats priming and giving us the tooth, and often has no colour.
Because of that shiny airbrush I use, I'm going to mix up an opaque basecolour and spray the anyways, with the low pressure of the airbrush I can get in really close and cover it 100% easily.
I had a think about the black vs white and how GW really pushes the black for begginers especially.
Having the model primed black into every nook and cranny 100% coverage is easier going on brush basecoating becase when you cant get the brush right down in there, leaving a bit of the black showing, it will likely look like natrual shadowing instead of a light grey patch shining out from the deepest recesses. I dont think its anything to do with how colours look and behave over the top of black or white (using black gives us a duller dingier overall paint job, which does often suit the grimdark aspect)
Another way to get a variation of tones across the orks couldve been to prime some white, some grey, some black etc.
Under sunlight I can really tell the differecne between one of these orks primed grey and one primed in khaki, the khaki guys colours are more saturated and vibrant, just slightly.
If it were anything but orks it'd look so wrong, but I've gone for it intentionally specifically because its orks
Just kinda wish the end results were maybe 5-10% more noticable.
On the other mobs, I might do another layer of drybrush and wash with some varied colours.. still thinking about it atm as they dont look bad to me, just not what I imagined last week.
Progress on the Goffs today has slowed, last night I realised I've got this far and left one poor boy out, Ive done 11 Goffs, supposed to be 12, so Ive got the straggler getting caught up. He's currently on his first coat of eshin grey.
Am picking up my daughter in about an hour, so probably wont get all that much done today (unless she wants to nap all day I suppose)

 Im glad you mentioned the camera; would you believe its from my phone? Turns out theyve made some progress hehe (Galaxy S4 13mp camera for anyone interested)
edit;
Got me some pens
Staedler Pigment Liners; Were £9.99 in Rymans Stationary If theres any UK hobbyists after some pens. (£2.99 each or the 4 pack for £9.99)
I think these will do the trick?
Will test them out later on and post results, I've not go to the stage of putting white down where I wanted checker boards yet.

Quick update
I got a chance to do a little work on these this evening. First pic is a handful of guys thta got a coat of Rhinox Hide on the leather strapping, plenty more work on the leather to do though stood infront of those is the straggler I mentioned.
2nd pic is of the straggler caught up with the rest and my first attempt with the pigment pens. I decided the rear part of the chainsword should be red, so I'l put that in later next time I get the red out.
What do you think of the checkers, I might take the pens back and ask to swap it for another set; the 0.1mm pen had the lid not on properly in the packet, and seemingly as a result it doesnt work very well. I did this with the 0.3mm pen. Am hoping I can do another coat later on, will it do multiple layers? or will touching it with the pen just reactivate the old ink?

I shouldn't imagine it will 'reactive' the ink, simply because if it's pigment based like paint, then as we don't see our basecoats turning to liquid an mixing with our highlights, your pigment pen shouldn't turn back to ink with a second coat.

Thanks, It did take more coats in the end Just had to be a bit patient with the drying.
Although I still have to return the pack (again) ... the 0.1mm tip pen just doesn't work (on anything). Anyone tried Staedtler pens before and had issues with the 0.1mm? Because this is 2 in a row now. Lol one more and I'm getting myself a refund, and going to another shop and another brand!
Here's what I managed to do with the 0.3mm pen. I'm happy enough with how that went Purposefully didn't take the care to ensure the grid was perfectly straight, or that the squares were infact square, afterall if orks did this I'm suprised it even resembles squares tbh! for a couple of those shoulder pads, I had to pop the heads off draw the checkers and reglue the heads, as they just blocked the pens nib from getting in.
I think theres still a couple of guys that need the leather basing in Rhinox Hide, highlights on the leather, weathering on the checkerboards (think they look s a bit clean) and the faces still to go.
On that note, what colours are ork mouths? tongues? lips? etc? Has this been defined in the fluff? I notice GW's studio team do them pink gums, pinky red tongue, pnik lips, kind of like humans. Anyone got any tips/ tricks for this?
I swung by the local GW and picked up a pot of Rakarth Flesh to do the teeth / claws with (
I asked the manager which paint was the new dheneb stone.

Another update for these guys
Getting close to finishing this squad up now, just some highlights, touchups, and one or two details left to go.
The bases... what colour should I do the bases? A lot of guys are shoddily glued on, I'm going to have to pin them all I think. So the bases mightaswell be painted with no guy stood on them.
My Space Marines have a purple rim (to match their power armour), So the Orks may get a nice bright green rim. the tops are textured with slate, sand, bits of stuff from the bits box and some 'windsor and newton galeria acrylic mineral texture gel' (bit of a mouthful, but its just colourless textured paint. They do a few textures.
Also which clan next? I've got to go through all of them.. might try my hand at Badmoons ... wonder how bright a yellow I can muster

 I emailed the store that I bought them from, and they say they will post me a new pack of the pens hehe.
The squad just has touching up to do and a final check over
Well that and the bases. Once I've got the bases painted and the guys pinned back on, I'l get some nice pic's with a decent white background hopefully.
Then move onto the next squad. Its took me 14 days to get to this point, but only 5 of those were working on this squad in particular. The rest was assembly of the whole lot, and the mass green painting.

So Da Goff's are about done, just waiting on a nice spot of weather to spray a matt clear coat. (its a bit rainy and damp out there today)
Front and rear views; wish the sunshine was out, I'm a bit short of lamps for light boxing, this is the best I could manage today.
Work has begun on the Badmoonz;
I grabbed 12 of the orks that I'd done the skin on and left. Applied 2-3 coats of thinned out Averland sunset on the yellow areas, washed that with Seraphim sepia, Drybrushed them heavily with Hexos Pale Sun, and then washed with Cassandora Yellow, Next is another drybrushing with Hexos Palesun (medium heavy) and a coat of Lamenters Yellow, Then if I still want brighter repeat, perhaps using white or Srceaming Skull to drybrush. Maybe Edge highlights in Badmoons Yellow (I've got a pot from the 80's hehe).

Quick update on da Badmoonz.
Got most of the base colours down, bits of tidying up to do, and detailing them all, before taking them off the bases, and adding pins before painting the bases and glueing them on again.
All the paints used so far (except the skin colours) are sat behind them in the piccy.
Wasn't too sure on the yellow, its a bit warm, in favor of not stripping them, I decided to leave it hehe.
Other progress includes the bosspole for da Goffs being swapped out for one with the goffs logo on rather than deathskulls.
Hoping to get these finished up before I'm back at work on Monday

WOW! Nice job! Automatically Appended Next Post: I really want to break out my Orks now, have loads, never painted, primed some, have trukks, never built... These models are well done! Automatically Appended Next Post: If I may, a trick to basing is to offset the model by using another color other than what is on the model. Granted you may not have that color green on your Orks, but they are a color green. Perhaps a brown base, or rock gray. Then your models will stand out even more so. I would buy them from you and use them, I'm not saying anything is bad or wrong with them at all. Just a suggestion and my opinion.

 Thanks for the encouraging comment Kelly.
I've just gone through the 12 badmoon with khorne red beggining the eyes and mouths. Quite a few layers were done on the Goff's eyes, teeth and tongues, so I ought to make them match up hehe.
I might experiment with a different base rim, I went with moot green, mostly because the Space Marines on my shelf have a purple rim that matches their power armour. A solid pure black rim might actually make the Goff's come across a bit less dark, bringing out the highlights a little.
As for selling them, It wasn't the original intention, but maybe for the right offer I hadn't really thought about selling my paint work on models before; what would you rate them at? table top? or somewhere between tabletop and showcase? (I'm not niave enough to think these are fully showcase quality hehe)

Another little update
Got a bit of the detailing done, although I'd lke to ask you fine folks for opinions on the chekcerboard this time? ... in particular the nobz shoulder plate, but I think the scale of the squares is a bit small this time around? .. it works on some plates better than others I guess.
Still to do; bases, everyone needs pins in the feet.
all the piercings,buckles n clips, and little teef hanging off dis n dat.
general touch ups
Badmoons logo on bosspole
(the lightings just changed at my desk... the picture is all yellow now :/ need to fiddle with the white balance on the phone.. it does have some settings suprisingly)

Hey man the Bad moons are looking really good I assume you followed the wash method? as they look similar to the way mine are turning out Your checkered patterns are looking really slick and are a great addition to your models. Its a nice fancy detail that remains orky while being a nice little eye catcher on the model.
I too would also like to comment on the base rims. While there is nothing wrong with the colour used (it certainly makes the base pop out with the break up between the ork->base->rim.
But id also suggest having a little experiment, I have used a reasonably light brown on mine that is different from the base but still blends in when scanning them on the tabletop. Just see what you like, overall your models are really sleek and id love to play against you with such a nice army Have you seen cork basing? as your going to the effort of pinning your models id say have a look at cork board basing. I think you might like the look and/or you could simply reserve it for your special characters/smaller units (30 boys is alot of bases!).
Really glad you keep this updated, I enjoy checking in motivates me to keep painting!

Update time
The Badmoons are 95% done, just finishing touches to go. I kinda want the moon logo on that bosspole
The two squads together;
(the Goff's new bosspole needs the little hanging skull painting still)
Work has begun on Evil Sunz
At this point I grabbed the obligatory 12 boyz, including 1 nob, and one with a big shoota. (The nob has the evil sunz bosspole on before i started this time )
Based the red areas in mephistion red, mixed with ultra matte medium, and thinned out a lot. 2-3 coats of that untill the colour was pretty flat.
Then drybrushed in Lugganoth Orange (believe its the same colour as kindleflame red in the citadel drybrushing colours)
And washed that in Carroburg Crimson Shade.
Then Drybrushed again in Lugganoth Orange.
Then glazed red, the pot of red glaze is really old, hexagonal pot of citadel. But they do a new red glaze that actually has a matte finish in the new line... I shouldv'e grabbed a pot last time I was in town.... But I plan to do a matte clear coat at the end anyway so no biggie.
All 3 together
Edit; Oh I also changed the base rims to black. I think you were right; the darker colour brings the models out a bit more. Particularly on Da Goffs.
Thanks for all the encouragement It certainly helps motivation to keep going hehe.
The bases, I did them all in one go using a few things;
Sand, Slate (my front garden is covered in it), Windsor and Newton Galeria Mineral Texture Gel, bits of models from the bits box, and bits of junk I find that are suitable... springs, wires, bits of plastic in odd shapes etc.
I chop up all the bits to make them look more like scrap and trash and to make them go further
Need pins because the surface is uneven, and the galeria texture gel stuff is kind of squishy because of how thick it is. Regardless with pins and a spot of superglue for each foot they seem solid.
Paint for the bases went as follows; Steel Legion Drab basecoat (mixed with ultra matte medium, thinned, 2 coats.)
Drybrush Zandri Dust.
Drybrush Screaming Skull
Wash with liquitex acrylic ink transparent raw umber and matte medium.
apply spots of Liquitex carbon black ink mixed with glaze medium.
drybrush again with screaming skull.
Warplock bronze and a nuln oil wash for metals.
Warboss green and a nuln oil wash for other bits n bobs (eg gun casing of a lasgun or hatch off a tank)
Wash the entire thing again in Raw Umber Ink with matte medium.
Paint rims Abbaddon Black.
Drill holes for pins and mount figure.

Evil Sunz are coming along
So far Ive done a base coat of eshin grey (2-3 coats thinned) and a wash of nuln oil on the grey/black parts. and a single thinned coat of warplock bronze on the metal parts.
Have been window shopping forgeworld
Got my eye on two things;
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Orks/ORK_VEHICLES/ORK_HALFTRAKK.html
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Orks/ORK_VEHICLES/ORK-TRUKK-WITH-ENCLOSED-CAB.html
If I get both of those kits... How much am I short of making the standard GW plastic truck too? ... as in what parts from the plastic kit do both of those FW trucks share?
Would it be a far fetched idea to try and make 3 trucks form the two kits?

Oh really? This I was not aware of, dang!
I might change it still. Still not sure how much I like the checks on the badmoons compared to the goffs I've done.
Black dags on a white background?
How about Evil Sunz? (being as I'm on those atm)
edit; would it be unfluffy to have checks on everyone in order to tie them to the warboss... the warboss from AoBR is a Goff I'm pretty sure. So would it just be totally unfluffy for everyone to have some checks to tie them to his Waaagh sort of like a uniform among all the different clans?

Not really. It's more a Clan Preference thing than anything required (it's Orks, after all).
And it's black dags on yellow. Bad Moons look kinda like hornets. Often the dags are wiggly, like penants.
Evil Sunz like to go fast. That's about it. Checks or dags or just solid colors. Maybe racing stripes?
Deff Skulls think Blue is lucky, and so often will Woad themselves. Also, they paint looted stuff blue- so maybe have other colors 'peeking' out from under the blue?
Snakebites are kinda Native American, with black and red and white dags on brown. Also they tend to be more rugged and rough in skin.

Cool thanks for the info
I'l consider what to do about the badmoons.. paint over it vs strip and repaint.
I could easily grab another squad and make those badmoons while stripping this lot and making these I some other clan... maybe blood axes...but other orks dont like them right? would it be odd to have them together?
I did think that badmoons have better gear... maybe the shoota boys
For snake bites im considering getting some fantasy savage orks and converting them a tiny bit.
Also lookin at the black orks to be ard boys.
Any thoughts on those? maybe the black orks would make good badmoons with the teefs for buying armour?

That'd be a fine idea!
Yeah, Bad Moonz are more rich. They got more teef than other orks- the reason they like yellow is because it looks 'flash' and fancy. So they'll have better equipment generally.
Savage orks for Snakebites is a great idea.
On the Blood Axes- it's not that other Orks don't like them, it's that they think they're a bit strange- because Blood Axes tend to be a little more intelligent. They'll do things like tactical retreats, wear camoflage (sorta) or trade with other races, or even, for the right price, work as mercenaries. Stormboyz tend to be Blood Axes because of the discipline and 'order', Kommandoes because they're sneaky and use tactics, and you could probably do deffkoptas up like them as well due to the Hit and Run special rule they have.

Quick update before I head out to work.
Evil Sunz are coming along, I've decided that I'm going to stick with the checks now I've started; logic being that I've got a lot of models to paint... and stripping some that are otherwise acceptable is not the way to go about gettign them all done hehehe.
To that end I'm now going to continue with checks on all squads. It will be the thing that ties them together as an army the way I'm looking at it.
Progress has slowed as I'm back at work (booo!) but still chugging along, putting in 30-60mins here and there when i can.

 Thanks for the tip, I had done this on the Goff's unit as a finishing touch, not over the entirety of the checks, just selectively applied. Made a nice effect.
The white though, looks a wee bit brighter in my photo's than it actually does under average lighting. Its just 2 coats of thinned out ceramite white. Its even patchy and not uniform coverage. Which kind of gets hidden by the black squares breaking it up.
Lol ceramite white makes me laugh; when they brought out the new paint range, the manager in my local GW was so excited by it telling me it covers in a single coat, wanted me to try it out, but couldnt provide any acrylic mediums, clean water, quality brushes or lighting in the store. I pointed all this out to him, and suggested that any 'test' i do with a crap brush using unthinned paint is no test atall Ceramite White doesnt cover particularly all that well when its thinned to be usable. But most whites dont tbh (Liquitex Titanium White Acrylic Ink certainly is more strongly pigmented than any other whites Ive used on my models and that takes serveral coats to get a clean colour).
While we're talking about weathering effects;
I Have been thinking about getting a set of weathering pigments for using on this Ork force, particularly for nay vehicles I add to them in future. Can anyone suggest places to get them, preferred brands (and why theyre prefered?) I only really know of the Forgeworld ones.. but am sure theres others (perhaps better ones). Or any good tutorials on how to apply them, how to fix them, seal them etc etc.
Never used them before but have seem some great work done with them.

In Second Edition Orks, which was the most fluffiest IMO.
When you picked a squad they where from a clan, like:
stormboys = blood axes
nobs = Goffs
gretchin (Grots) = SnakeBites
Mega Nobz = Bad Moon
Biker Boys and Buggies = Evil Sunz
Lootas = Deff Skulls
I choose to play Badmoon as my Main Klan and have squads with other faction colours, lead by a Badmoon Nob.
Bad Moons' emblem is a grinning moon with a black sun in the background, thats where people now get the squiggly dags from.
Keep up the Great Work, cant wait to see more!

 Thanks for the encouragement.
I've never really been that fussed on Orks until recently hehe, The ones from my AoBR set were sat laying around for so long before I did anything with them. At which point I added the few units that make it upto what it is now.
Painted them up kinda rushed and wasn't too happy with the results. Had about 70% of them painted. But they sat in a box for maybe a year or 2 with no love before they got the fairy power spray treatment. And then they sat in pieces for a long time while I painted yet more Space Marines.... rather bored of Power Armour despite having a fair few to go on those... :(
So dug the Orks out and rebuilt them the week before having a fortnight off work, been back at work for a week now and this is how far I've got. Still much to come I've banned myself from buying anything more model wise until these are all painted! (Only more supplies to paint these with is allowed )
The inspiration for multiple clans came from partly being bored of the single colour of Space Marines, and partly from Ghazgul Thrakkas Waaagh for Armageddon being made of Orks from all over the galaxy; it mustve been all clans

Update time again
So I've been busy on these guys this weekend. Got the Evil Sunz mob pretty close to done, just some finishing touches and tidying up to do on those. Then I began work on a Death Skulls Mob of Shoota Boyz;
Whole project so far;
Evil Sunz Mob; (hehe please ignore all the superglue solvent marks on the desk; theyre from putting a spot of glue around the pins on the undersides of the bases itle come up when I wipe the desk down next)
New Bosspole for the Badmoons; This is made from a 40k Ork bosspole with the top cut off, and an old fantasy Night Goblin banner top found in the bitzbox. Just base coated Averland Sunset so far.
The Death Skulls; Been laying down base colours so far.
The blue is a 50-50 mix of The Fang and Caledor Sky. The grey is Mechanicus Standard Grey with about 30$ Abaddon Black mixed in (Thought I'd try those instead of Eshin Grey to reduce coats needed for coverage).
The metals are Warplock bronze, Drybrushed Leadbelcher, washed in Agrax Earthshade.
Plans for this afternoon are to carry on working on these, so another update may come later this evening

Another update
These guys are getting near to completion. Some more highlights on the eyes, teeth claws etc to go. And the obligatory checkers, going where there is white
Thought these guys lacked a few flat areas for checkers, so whipped up some shoulder pads to go on a few too.
Hoping to get all the finishing touches and touch ups done on the four units over the next few days.
Might take a break from the Orks after that, and work on the Land Raider Crusader thats in pieces at the back of my desk.... we'll see, as theres still burna Boyz, Lootas, Nobz, Warboss and Deffkoptas to come yet before I'm allowing myself to purchase any more Orks.
