Maybe as a simple apoc formation even?

I usually run:

Astorath

Libby dread x1
Furioso x2

25 DC
Death company dread x5

Dread x3

That gets me 11 dreads and a legal army, but its a push to get that into normal ish games

I was actually making this as an Apoc only Codex x) Should be a complete laugh when it works though ^_^ Me and my friend are currently discussing artillery/AA variants of dreadnoughts (after all, it's the same sarcophagus interred into whatever dread is necessary... Right?)

OK, I'm sorry. I have to. May the Emperor's Justice be swift and painless.

Spoiler:
Gameworkshop should allow the Dreadnoughts to have their own army in the future and their own codex of course.

Story could be a good amount of Dreadnoughts has joined together, combing their powers or are just working together to take revenge on the Chaos Space Marines

HQ
Bjorn the Fell-handed

Elites
Venerable Dreadnought

Troops
Dreadnought
Death Company Dreadnought

This may seem unbalanced but they could make it balance, just look at the Space Marines, they are all powerful and they have their own codex and army.

Now just ally with Space Wolves and take Bjorn as your SW HQ.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

For fast attack dreads, replace legs with treads or wheels and have bike equivalents, rather than jump pack equivalents. The tracked carriage for the thunderfire cannon is probably close to ideal with a bit of work.

I also think having a chapter of dreads is a little over the top, but why not have a crusade of dreads? Some high and mighty imperial leader goes mental and orders all chapters in the sector/segmentum/whatever to contribute dreadnoughts for a new crusade force. He promises to sweep up the bits and send them home if he breaks them

I always thought wheeled/tracked dreads would look really derpy, like the KLoS (Khorne Lord of Skulls)... I just shudder to think of what one would look like

I love your idea, btw. Does it mesh with established fluff? Not a jot. Does that matter? Well, let's look at some the things that are established as official fluff by GW publications... yeah... some of it is pretty darn silly, to be honest, with a few things that are just as outlandish and implausible as a chapter of Dreads. And of course, the game and setting as a whole, despite its emo grim-darkyness, is not without a sense of humour and whimsy. The whole point is to take it and make it your own. It's with this spirit that I behold your idea, so I say run - or rather, plod - with it. Remember that on forums such as these people tend to suffer from a case of srs bsns when it comes to things like this... just ignore them and enjoy the hobby.

Thanks for the support, seriously, it's nice to know there are some people out there who actually want you to succeed, in stead of claiming that you crapped over the fluff, and saying how it would never work in the setting

The thing is, it never WOULD work in the setting, and there is demonstrable evidence to why it wouldn't. This is pertinent for one simple reason.
1. This forum (40k background) is for discussing established 40K background.

What this forum is for!

40K Background Forum is for serious discussion and research of the 40K background stories known as fluff.

This includes asking and answering sensible questions about life in the 40K era, which might relate to all kinds of Imperial and Xeno military or civilian life providing your discussion remains based in the “serious” 40K universe.

Of course, I've taken a break from kicking puppies, pushing over old ladies and whatever other shenanigans us "srs business" Dakka posters occupy our time with to help you out.

If you want to ask a question about the 40k setting, you do it here.

If you want to work on rules (force organization/equipment/stats) for a homebrew codex, you post it in Proposed Rules, and there will be a whole community there to help you out with it.

If you want to create your own Space Marine chapter, it goes in Dakka fiction, and you can even propose a permanent article so that your ideas can remain accessible.

Well, seeing as how the original topic was on Background...the easiest thing would be to start a new thread in the proper forum.

Little yellow triangle in the top right corner will alert a mod and you can ask to have it moved to the appropriate forum...

But, you should probably just start over by asking to have this thread locked and break your ideas up into separate threads in proposed rules, fiction and painting and modeling.

As for background, make it somthing like:

Ironhides Chapter-
Sufferning catastrophic loss's, including the loss of their home world, the Ironhides chapter was recalled to mars and awaited the desicion by the high lords of terra whether or not they would rebuld their chapter or send them off on a final glorious misson. One of the magistrates on mars was particularily friendly with the Ironhides Master of the forge and had been thinking of ways to increase dreadnought production and utlity to the chapter. He pleaded to the high lords to send all remaining healthy marines from the chapter to his Forge so he could incorperate them into the mechanicus cult and they conceded, convinced that the imperium would be better served with more techmarines available.

While on Mars, the wounded chapter master and captains were entombed in specially crafted dreadnoughts at the request of the MotF so that they could continue to serve. Since the High magos had many dreadnoughts at his disposal he was able to save many of their wounded chapter as well. This new Ironhides chapter is composed of over 380 dreadnoughts of various types, some of which are of completely new design and are under extensive Field Testing.

I might ammend the servo skulls a bit though.

As they are they would have to be about 6 points apiece which is way too cheap for complete cover negation.

Im thinking about making them swarms and increasing their base statline a bit. Mabey bring em up to 9 points apiece.
