This is just a question about seeing lots of army lists with "DA Librarian" just to get access to Powerfield Generators. Is this an auto take? Does anyone think this is cheap or stupid? Or, is it just the nature of the game?
EDIT: This post was concerning taking the DA Librarian as an ally only for PFG. I swear I'm seeing this almost as much as ADL's in lists that have access to Dark Angels allies.

It is one of the very few things unique to the Dark Angels dex and that happens to be good too. Really you should ask yourself why you are playing Dark Angels and haven't take one?

You should always squeeze one into your list if you have the points, even if just taking him bare bones. Divination is just that good.

I'm not sold on the DA librarian for my WS army at the moment. There are no real units from the DA codex aside from him I want to include. I've been using a regular Marine Psyker because for 110 points I can get a LVL2 psyker on telepathy that is pretty good by himself. That gives me the points for extra goodies without paying the 120+ points for a DA librarian and the 60+ points for DA troops.

DA is THE flexible codex of 6th, with toys for all men's tastes. That said, competitive green, death, or multi -wing should all take a libby, because yes, he IS that good, unlocking DA's most interesting wargear.
|
I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can. |

The DA libby is the HQ of choice unless your are building around one of the special characters. Even then, adding one is still rather effective. Its a pity they FAQ'd the Powerfield not to work from inside a vehicle. And the state of deathwing sergeants due to FAQing is bad as well.

You can see based on the above responses, that even though it might not be an auto-take, it is such a strong candidate for an HQ slot that the bigger questions is: why would I NOT take one?
The reduced price on the librarian coupled with the DA specific wargear for the invuln is pretty sweet. Its uses are broad and it applies its effect in a bubble which is just down right awesome.
The bigger problem I have is taking 2 HQ's. I normally dont like to run 2, but with the DA codex its hard not to. If you dont take one of the special chars then your ravenwing/deathwing arent scoring. I often times take Azrael because he buffs a whole squad and makes my RW and DW scoring, but I need the libby on a bike to take the command squad with the banner.
For me, there is really no way around this. Combined they eat up a lot of points, but when I drop one the effectiveness of my lists suffers greatly.
(I have tested games without a libby and using only the libby, its rough).

Sorry, I somehow missed the crux of my post here: Is The Dark Angels Librarian a crux to take for ALLIES? I've seen lots of armies taking him as an ally just to shove in the PFG. That was why I thought it was dumb. But, all of your comments have been useful and enlightening nonetheless.

I am at the point where I would almost rather take Space Wolves, just to try and deal with psykers.

To a great degree yes. However this is not the libby's fault it is the fault of the other HQ's. The other HQs are either close combat bargain HQs or priced for their FOC modification abilities (which only work in the primary detachment). The rest of the codex has some internal synergistic elements but almost all of those do not affect another dex. If the dex had just allowed the FOC changes to be used in the allied slots you would see Belial, Sammael, and Azzy taken. If the dex had allowed bike and termie company captains to play FOC shenanigans then you would have seen those taken. It also doesn't help that the troops slots are a tax for the most part with scouts with no Landspeeder storm and TAC marines that SW and C:SM both do better.

I can understand where you're coming from. I like to build competitive armies, but also want them to make some kind of fluff sense. But my opinion on what kind of allies to take has changed drastically in the short time that I've been back in 40k and playing 6th edition. I have had two tournament experiences now where I've had to face armies with dual riptides in 2 out of 3 games. High strength, low AP, ignores cover shots simply destroy anything without an invulnerable save.
Because of how extremely nasty riptides are and how many people are bringing them to tournaments, I think we'll be seeing more DA allies for the PFG and we'll be seeing ADLs replaced with Skyshields.

Well, it certainly makes sense from a business perspective for Games Workshop. Cover has been popular for a while, now let's sell some Invulnerable saves ...
