The warp is inimical to life - that has always been the background going back twenty years or more, and since it was first conceptualised.
One piece of background, that was written either meant as metaphor/overblown legend, or it just a poor piece of writing (it could be either really) does not change that.

Yes, it's nice my armies get supplements but if the previous ones are any indication.. I'm paying a lot of money for fluff they may or may not butcher and some poorly thought out rules.
Maybe I'll be surprised and the quality will increase. In the meantime you're paying twice for each codex basically..
The Supplements aren't required for play, so nobody is "gouged". People have to voluntarily hand over their money for them, you know...
They also can't really butcher the fluff; seeing as how they invented and own it, they can do with it whatever they want.
Col. Dash wrote:Oh and calling UM Ultramorons is analogous to the US army calling the Marines "Jarheads" or paratroopers "dirt darts", clerks "chairborne rangers". Calling other branches or career fields derogatory names is a time honored tradition in likely every military in history and promotes unit pride and competitiveness.
Any of the other founding Legion chapters should have gotten the first suppliment before Ultramorons, since Codex Space Marine is Codex Ultramarine for all intents and purposes since the UM follow the codex to the letter. A suppliment of marines should have additional rules and units for chapters that are close but not exactly codex. I would go so far as to say most of the chapters presented in the codex should be out and lesser known chapters like the Black Dragons, Fire Hawks, Rainbow Warriors(snicker) and Marine Malevolent should have been the ones presented with a suppliment with their own chapter tactics.
We have no right to say which Legion "should have" gotten a Supplement first. They are completely a labor-of-love thing ( GW's own words). The Supplements are completed based on inspiration, and aren't going to dramatically change or shape the meta. The Ultramarines may closely adhere to the Index Astartes, but they have diverted, and they have successor chapters. Also, they are the most tactically flexible of all the Space Marines, and a Supplement offers a way to flesh that out further.
Finally, THE SPACE MARINES CODEX IS NOT CODEX ULTRAMARINES!!! Essentially or otherwise. Each chapter gets play time in the book; sure, the UM's get more special characters, but GW wasn't going to delete any either. In reading through the thing, I can tell you it doesn't even feel like Codex Ultramarines.
Back on topic: I hope for Tyranids in November too.

This. He basically hangs out in there all the time, but comes back to visit and remind the Grey Knights that he's technically still in charge.
I love how the Inquisition doesn't constantly question them or Draigo for being lead by a guy who spends more time in the Warp than anywhere else.
What's more asinine than the Draigo fluff itself, was a new player in my area who bought into it. Like...he really loved it. He's like 35 years old and was gushing about how cool Draigo is; how he's the heir to the Emperor's throne, etc.
I'm not joking...it was embarrassing.

i usually sneer at people who hate on matt ward's fluff but that is pretty stupid. The inquisition wouldn't allow a company of armoured psychic knights led by a dude who actually resides in the warp. I get that gk would be allowed much more leniancy in such matters than say, an imperial commander, or even a space marine. But that is taking the piss.

I have no real problems with Matt Ward's stuff. Draigo was really the major offense, and people have just attached it to everything he does. He made the Necron fluff 100% better than it ever was before, that's for sure. He also writes good rules (once 6th edition rotated in, that is).

He secretly has an addiction to burlesque houses. Slaanesh offers him plenty of those on his paltry GK salary.

What about Death Korps of Krieg, or there are already many 3rd party producers who do guys who look similar (Victorias miniatures, Pig Iron productions to name but 2?)

Agree about the Necrons completely, before there wasn't really too much to them (although it kind of highlights the great difficulty for codex writers these days - in the static setting of the universe, change anything, even something minor like making devastators rookie marines, and you get fans of the previous version of events berating you... the alternative is to write everything as before, swap around a few ands and whats, and then get labelled as boring.. )
As for Draigo I always thought it was meant to be taken as the future account of some epic legend, rather than to be taken literally. "And lo, Draigo did bestride the warp and fell the great daemon beast mortarion, his mark forever made on the heart of the traitor primarch son" - that kind of thing. Same too with Calgar blocking a valley solo against an orc army for a 'day and a night'. You have to think - what fits better with established background and plausibility; heroic legend of events, blown out of proportion in history, or a warrior a) surviving in the environment that would mean instant obliteration to anyone else and then b) defeating possibly one of the toughest guys in the galaxy, on his home turf, and pwning him so badly that he can 'carve his name into him' (reference to the movie Predator possibly? )
It's so overblown and implausible that you have to think that it is not meant to be taken in a literal sense - and that Ward has carefully navigated the problem I stated above of not being able to re-write the existing history, but instead has just come up with a kind of 'ancient historical account' type version... +EDIT+ Actually, not ridicule ward - I mean that really it is up to us to choose which was we want to read in the background, and to use the provided roll-eye emoticons with people who genuinely believe a single marine could hold of an entire ork army for 48 hours by himself, or an astartes could beat a daemon Primarch (in the warp), and wonder whether they have read any of the other Black library or background material to believe that such things are possible?

I'm not sure how the rest of you feel, but I just lose interest whenever I see a fantasy release slot. The system and model range has never appealed to me in the least, though if they're doing a big Dark Elves release, there's some hope that perhaps some of the 40k armies in more dire need of updates might see a more comprehensive model release somewhere down the line.

He took an extremely one-dimensional one-trick pony that had shat all over all pre-existing 40K fluff and turned it into a varied, customizable and hobby-friendly background that hobbyists can adapt, play with, campaign with, and "make their own" in a million different ways that were all impossibly by the needlessly rigid "oldCron" fluff.
