That was really cool to watch. I also agree that the big LOS blockers make the game a lot more interesting. I've really underestimated those doctrines! It is really cool to see the tactical flexibility that they allow you. Space Marines used to seem to me like they try to be TAC but prove incompetent in most areas, but with this new codex it seems to me like they can finally be the jack-of-all-trades army they're supposed to be.

The community is a great place to come for tactics advice, and there is a lot of very sound opinions and idea out there, but at the end of the day, play the game how you want to... Don't worry about the hordes of Dakka descending on your gaming club to arrest you for taking one heldrake or not using a screamerstar. Knowing the standard opinion (and that's all it is) on what is good/bad and conforming to that opinion religiously are two entirely separate things.

I think Reecius is beginning to prove some of my suspicions about UM. They are the most flexible army and the core power armor choices (Tacticals, Devastators, and Assault Marines) all become viable with their chapter tactics in a balanced TAC list.

Excellent report there Reece its good to see you making full use of the variety of chapter tactics the Ultramarines have. Im really liking the new Space Marine Codex and hope I get to play against a few at Duel Con.

Nice report - I too enjoyed seeing the new marines put through their paces vs Eldar.
I haven't played Tau/Eldar with my marines yet, but feel like grav weaponry is the way to go to counter those insane TripTide/WraithKnight lists. It's also great vs tyranids, other marines, and certain daemons lists (FMC's with 3+ armor, etc).
Reece's list on the other hand seems to go more traditional marine style, and it works. That's great. I'd like to see more games where you try out some different chapter tactics and show how the codex really does play differently depending on the chapter you use.
Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! Yeah, that was a super fun game, the Space Marines are so much fun, such a good codex! They are ironically not a beginner book any more at all though, they have to be played pretty dang carefully, actually. However, if you do, they are a blast. It's funny how Marines went from the army for new players to the thinking man's army.
@Herpguy
It makes a HUGE difference in the game. It is so much more fun than an open shooting gallery. Maneuver matters, deployment matters, etc. I really can't stress how much more you gain from this, I think that one change will make tournament results shift a lot, you will see less Taudar dominance and other armies, particularly short ranged and assault armies, having a level playing field to compete.
@Talore
I totally agree, they are the best TAC army in the game right now, IMO. They seriously have a tool for everything, and each of those tools is good! I am so pleased with the book so far.
@Panzer Leader
Yeah, Tastey Taste is the that pointed it out to me and he's right, the UMs CTs in my eyes are the best for a TAC list. They are subtle, require timing and forethought, but are super powerful when timed correctly. They are for sure what won me the game.
@Shamikebab & ansacs
Correct, you can't use it coming out of a vehicle, but it works really well for hiding a unit if going second (as I did) and then moving out into a good firing positions and blasting someone. It makes the Devs squads much more reliable.
@Skari & Ray
Thanks!
@Dubd797
No, I forgot! Doh! Haha, and I put him in Termie armor in a pod for just that purpose. It just slipped my mind but that could have been fantastic to get First Blood and blast a unit. Oh well, I won't forget next time.
@Gogless
No, we goofed. I just thought you could ally them. And I am supposed to be a "rule guy" too, kind of embarrassing, but oh well. We did it only to allow Frankie to use the really ace looking Avatar we painted up.
@tetrisphreak
Yeah, the next big tests are Hell Turkies and Tau. That will show if we can hang. It is really nice to see the "traditional" Marine builds actually work where for so long they have sucked hard.
And we are going to do reports with the other CTs for sure, I have just been really enjoying UMs and think I will be playing them in tournaments.

IMO, the beginner armies nowadays are eldar, tau and necrons. They're quite easy to play, especially their more competitive builds. Smurfs are more tactically challenging, especially when you go up against the newer armies.
Arbiter wrote: Nice report, only thing is for Ultra smerf Tactics you may use each Combat Doctrine once per game ( cure you GW).
I love color schemes on all the armies and look forward to more reports.
Another very entertaining and informative batrep. Also digging the articles you write, Reece! Please keep em coming. Very tempted to order a space marine army from you guys and have your crew paint them as well. Thank you Reece and FLG crew!

I'm quite curious to see how Grav Weapons treat Wave Serpents.
Without a grav amp, the Wave Serpents will do quite well against Grav Weapons. Grav rifles and pistols are very unreliable against vehicles needing a "6" to do any kind of damage. The amp on the grav cannon centurions combined with the high rate of fire is what makes them killing machines.

Yeah, it had like, no impact on the game, really. Just opened up another HQ.
@Arbiter
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Yeah, as Jy2 said, Marneus lets you use one doctrine, twice. He is the man, seriously a fantastic all around HQ.
@Jy2
I agree 100%. Eldar used to be the finesse army (well, except for 4th ed with Tri-Falcon lists, that took zero skill) and now Marines are the finesse army. I like it, though.
@jamin484
Thanks! Glad you like them!
@Exhumed
Always. If you have any tips on format, technical stuff, etc. please let us know, we're always trying to improve.
@Garukadon
Sweet, that would be awesome! We'd be happy to have the business and yeah, now that we are back from Duel Con, I will get back at the articles.
@Smee
As Panzer Leader said, you need them on Cents or Bikes to really be reliable. I don't think they're a great choice for Tacs as Tacticals tend to move around a lot and the gun has short range, but I could be wrong. I think Plasma is better for them. That said, on Centurions or Bikes, they are very good against vehicles.
Well, you seem to have the recording and editing bit down (not that I have any real idea myself in that regard), but as a personal opinion, I preferred the reports without the in-depth summary between turns, as I feel you guys do a very good job of keeping us up to speed during the turns themselves, and the way you put it across makes the game very easy to follow. My two pence, anyway Keep making reports!
We get about an 80/20 ratio of those who like the longer format and those that want them shorter. Some folks understand what is going on in the game without the breakdown, some folks get a lot of good information from that.
We're trying to find a way to both speed it up and convey the information which is what folks really want. So, we're going to mess around with it but I am sure we can find a happy medium where we do both.
