I predict that, like Storm of Magic, this will be a runaway success for GW.

For some reason, $85 is cheaper than I was expecting... may pick this up.

HBMC, do you mean commercially or in terms of gaming? The SoM book itself is Awesome, super well done, packed to the brim with rules. It's Blood in the Badlands that wasn't.

So given it comes with cards and tokens... are we still calling this a glorified WD article? Just want to check.

£50 seems a little excessive, to be fair, but even so

Well, for those that remember the days of card inserts and pages specifically to be cut out and glued onto card backing, it still isn't much of a stretch, no.

Once upon a time a "Hey guys! Here are some rules for playing 3+ player games!" would've been a WD article. And they'd've had charts rather than cards, or cards available as a PDF on the website, or even around issue 200 they would have even had the cards.

So yeah, this is a WD article sold as a full-priced expansion.

Really, we're saying that in the good old days you'd get a 96-page rules supplement with 30+ cards in WD? I must've missed that issue

I remember a wyches game with about six cards, a board, and some card playing pieces about ten years ago I think

Well, around twenty five years ago, they gave away Confrontation, which was the precursor of Necromunda (but borrowed from RT, as 2nd Ed had yet to release) over the course of two issues. Yes, a whole, playable game, with campaign and experience rules as well as "army lists" all given away as part of the magazine.

Was it 92 pages? Probably not, but when you increase your typeface to this size and pad out with some regurgitated art it doesn't take much effort to fill 92 pages, especially as I expect there will be a fluff bit as well.

We've also had the Horus Heresy game given away (complete with card board and counters) as well as legion extra rules for new models and stuff for specialist games. "Permission granted to copy for personal use" use to appear on numerous occasions in every single issue.

Expansions were things like Hive War or Renegades for Epic, or Dark Millenium for 40K which contained a substantial amount of extra rules or units, as well as large amounts of card stock and (this may shock you) cost demonstrably less than the core game! (I know, right?)

So yes, we are saying that this is the sort of thing that would have been seen in WD back in the day, and not having some incidental gloss applied along with some tenuous justification of a ludicrous price tag and then shat out in an effort to gouge further cash from their increasingly anaemic "fan"base.

If it's full of rules/stats, like Storm of Magic, awesome. But I doubt it will be... despite my likely picking it up as I really am intrigued by allies in fantasy.

so, i read the Battle Report...

this is not simply an allies rules supplement...
it is an entirely new way to play the game...

the cards include Treachery Cards, which you use to pull jerk moves on the other players...
300 points of allies can be added to a 1500 point army, but then you pass up the chance to start with six extra coins...
in the game, coins can be used to bribe other players to leave you alone, or things like that...

the key is, the winner at the end of the game is decided by how many coins you have...
coins are earned in the game for wiping out units, or capturing objectives...
so, players are always earning coins as the game goes on, but have to be careful how many they spend...

seems like a fun idea for casual play...

cheers

How many pages of rules does it have, if anyone knows / finds out? I've decided to hold off if it's mostly bat reps.

Is there anything else to allies jah, or is it an open 300 points of anything?

the book says 96 pages, but the design article says about 5 pages of rules...

not sure what the total rules are, but they said you get 100 point of allies per 500 points in your army, and the only restriction is that you have to take a Lord or Kero before you take anything else...
so the Chaos player took a Liche Priest and a Warsphinx, the Dark Elf player took a Skink Chief on Terradon, and 2 packs of Salamanders, while the High Elf player too a single Wood Elf Lord...
the High Elf player only took 200 points of allies, so he started with 100 extra in coin...
the Ogre and Brettonian players didn't take allies, so they started with 300 extra in coin...

the funnest part seems to be the 36 Treachery cards...
the players said they all really enjoyed having something to do outside of their own turn, and throwing the wrench in the other players' plans...

cheers

Is it in addition to your army points? So 400 points of allies with a 2000 point army = 2400 total? Cheers

I read the battle report that was in the WD. Have to confess it looked like fun, small armies duking it out, playing cards to undermine each other. Much skullduggery going on!

That said its WAY too expensive and despite what some people are saying is EXACTLY the kind of thing that would have featured in a WD in the past (there are only about 5 pages of rules)

Tokens look nice and a fair bit of thought has gone into their design and the game itself though, from what i read in the 'in the studio' section. Which is by far the best bit of the 'Dwarf these days...

Had it been £30 then i think that would be a great price point to entice disillusioned WFB players back into the game but at its current cost i think many will pass it up.

So do you remember WD issues with 5 pages of rules? No?
I do. That's why I was talking about a blown up WD article.

I sold off my Fantasy army, I don't have the current rulebook and I do not care for the price tag on this one. So obviously I won't be getting it

But it looks like a hell lot of fun. I could see myself getting it if I was still into Fantasy.

It should have been a standalone ruleset. That would have been brilliant.

So I just noticed this posted on my facebook by the battle bunker near me. They apparently had a 4 way game of this and:
Games Workshop wrote:after 4 turns and MANY dirty tricks Al walked away the champion! (despite losing 70% of his army turn one before he had even gotten to have his turn)

I didn't plan to get it but the fact that you can lose 70% of your army before you even get a turn would be more than enough to turn me away if I planned to.
Looks like another book slapped together and printed without even the slightest though towards balance.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I don't think all of the other players ganging up on one guy is something any amount of "balance" is going to stop. Besides, he still won!

Sounds more like you're just fishing for reasons to hate it.

Someone losing that much turn 1 and still winning, if for example they won due to having more "coins", does strike me as a little silly.

Of course, it's possible everyone just left him alone after that and he won through brilliant maneuvering... but I don't think this is Ender Wiggin we're talking about here

(Yes, just got back from seeing it... not bad, but a bit rushed if you were wondering!)

I'm just saying that knowing nothing else about how it changes the game it sounds like 1 player does everything, another player does everything, then the 3rd, etc. That is just bad gameplay.
Maybe 'balance' isn't the problem here. You're right, he did still win, but if I spend all that time setting up my army, waiting for two or three other people to take their turns while putting away most of my army then finally getting a turn with the 30% that remains that just sounds boring.

Looking at those tokens again are they just cards?

I at least expected them to be plastic like the ones from that template set from way back when 8th edition hit.
