Def not a DOW re-release, I've got the book and there is no stat lines or anything regarding any of the old DOW mini's. All it says is that you can use any minitures from your collection or add new units.
Concept is pretty cool, so I'm interested to see how it plays. Has some pretty good fluff in it......over use of Orges IMO but other than that, I'm pretty happy with the book.

Mine just arrived, quite happy with the style of the book in a hard sleeve, with the coins in a bag and the cards are the larger size 'spell card size' when I was expecting tiny ones.
So not as bad value as I was initially expecting, made all the better for getting it from Dark Sphere of course.
Will have a read later.

Does it specify GW miniatures from your collection ?
Or is it an (accidental) green light for bringing other companies stuff to a GW store without being killed & buried in the basement

Don't be silly, there is no such things as these "other companies" of which you speak.

Book is fine, but it feels like everyone pays for a collector edition.
Plenty of background inside as well. In fact, only a quarter of the book are rules. The rest is just fluff.
Still expensive for the content, IMHO.

Some nice and in focus pics of the "Sorcerous portal" would be handy.
Looks like that could be a future terrain release.

I do not have my brother and I's copy on hand right now, but from what I saw it was pretty good material.
Yeah some of it seemed like photos of WD armies, but the "bat reps" were also broken up by the fact that you have what amounts to 3 campaigns in the book.

Big surprise there. Even though we got an entire collection of mercenaries sitting on shelves, its obvious that GW will continue to pull the "If you don't mention them at all, they don't exist" paradigm. Eh whatever. It's about as good as its going to get for the people wanting to run at least a pseudo- DoW army, so I guess I can't complain.

There is 3 fluff battles - dwarf/skaven/goblins, Khorne/tzeencth/vampire and dark elf/empire/Lizardmen. I'm hoping to run the last one soon as the people I play against run those armies.
The scenarios are pretty cool as too the army lists so you can run it straight from the book.

Don't worry, you can still get the Skull Throne, Skullknell Tower and the Skullvane Manse (didn't even have to make that last name up!).
Why did they discontinue those Fantasy terrain pieces?

They probably remembered that in the Warhammer Fantasy world, materials we take for granted in the real world (stone, wood) are a rare commodity. Instead, most structures are built out of materials drawn from the skullium layer that exists just slightly below the surface of every battlefield (this fluff is reflected in the design of their board tiles). Thus, buildings not made mostly out of skulls are unrealistic and detract from the overall cinematic feel.

That is not true: Lots of rules for walls, lots of rules for towers, even in the BRB.

Was flipping through the book after it came in the mail and the first thing I saw was a Lizardman character named Kraq-Rok...
Book looks well done and the artwork is nice. Will play some games this weekend hopefully.

What are the odds you'll ever play it again after that though?
With the exception of apoc I don't think I've ever seen any warhammer expansion played outside of the release month, which is why the hardback thing still makes me dismiss this out of hand.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Saw this book in the store today. High production value, but just too pricey for what amounts to a fairly specific alternate gameplay mode.

High odds for me at least. The rules aren't a drastic overhaul of any of the games main systems so their really isn't that much to remember. It really just provides good mechanics for multiplayer or odd number player battles, and the cards that come with the set ensure that the "neutral" players remain engaged even when they aren't the players actively taking part. The mercenary rules are also fun, and I can see those on their own being incorperated into 1 on 1 regular battles.
You're right about the amount of play previous warhammer expansins have had, however, this expansion feels more like a natural extention of the normal rules, and less about putting in whacky mechanics that completely change the game. I've played 4 battles with the rules, and can't remember having this much fun playing in a while. If your group is several players or often has an odd number where one player has to sit out, I recommend going dutch and all pitching in for the book and giving it a whirl. It takes 10 minutes to learn and you won't regret it. Automatically Appended Next Post: RiTides wrote:Saw this book in the store today. It's only specific if your gaming group just plays 1 v 1 and never has an odd man out. With my group, we will almost always have 1 player left over that has to sit out a battle, and these rules just make it possible to get the extra man in there without incorperating anything too crazy into the core mechanics of the game. I really can't stress enough how much fun this expansion has been.
