<-- The Grey Knight player here, my army build thoughts:

So my armies goal was to provide enough immediate threats that my henchman could get into position to do something useful. Shunting the two dread knights and a kitted out interceptor squad turn one generally draws attention and i was hoping it would pull heat off my long ranged venerable psyrifleman.

Never having played big guns i was really uneasy with putting my DKs on the other side of the board as that was basically two free VP and two less scoring for myself.

In retrospect:

When i only had 3 DCA make their charge i should have gone for the initiative bonus with swords instead of strength for axes. As i would then get to go first and could have potentially wiped the squad (somehow i convinced myself i wanted the Str bonus.)

Another thing i would have done different is once my rhino for the psykers wrecked i should have moved them up the backside to his objective, and then move my DKs into the forest while shooting at the avatar. But i didn't want to have to eat those 24 shots from the war walkers, so at the time i went with them and nearly got them! was some intense pens and saves being rolled. But ouch rending hurts and that cover save from forest would have been nice.

And i should never have charged that avatar with the interceptors. I was banking on activating that first turn and rolled a 10, needed a 9 for the justicars leadership. Then when he only had one wound left i never remembered to cast hammerhand to give what hits i got a fighting chance to wound.

But good game Nevermind, I had a blast.

Don't worry about this. I was surprised the Guardians did so well as they are not combat powerhouses.

Aggressively, I thought you still could have pulled it out. If you would have saved that last wound with your one Dreadknight, having both left could have made the ending intense. The wounded one could have shot and assaulted the Guardians in the open, possibly tying both up in combat. The other could have wrecked the War Walkers or jetbikes while grabbing its own objective and linebreaker.

I think you did the right thing here. Yea, your unit was probably more fine tuned for shooting but where they stood and the fact that the Avatar was right there, charging prevented a monumental Avatar charge. He would have had 5 normal attacks coming in, plus charging bonus, plus hammer of wrath, and you would have absorbed two Wailing Doom shots before the charge. Knowing this, he would have been Guided by the Farseer and you may have had 7-9 dead Interceptors in one go.

Yeah that is a good point, and he had like a 24" threat range right? I couldn't have moved the interceptors quite far enough away to avoid a charge, though i think i could have made it difficult.

You are right, but that's only if I was wiling to forgo assault. If I was wanting to assault, 18" probably still would have been pretty safe for the Interceptors.
