I don't know, I kind of like it, but then again I'm okay with anachronisms since I like 40k

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Anachronisms when explained are ok... This just seems like an arbitrary pinning of terraria/minecraft style early game mechanics to a game that would be far better off with something completely different.

I feel that it's explained just fine (see my previous posts), myself... but hey, different strokes for different folks.

The plot explanation is as good as any, I was thinking of an explanation from a game design point of view to be honest.

I can see no reason to ape the low tech phase of terraria other than because it's easier than thinking up a more scifi solution.

I think it was more an aesthetic choice, just like the pixelated art is.

Perhaps.

I was really hoping for a more "raid the planet for resources" approach to things where your spaceship is your main base that you would expand/repair by going down and mining assorted minerals.

The crafting table -> bow hunting -> furnace questline could be changed to "repair ships artificing interface" -> "hunt with your sword, cook it on the ship" -> "repair ships ore processing facilities".

There seem to be too many connection attempts for the starbound website to handle as all i get are different error pages. Is the beta start still planned for today and more specifically round about now?

Yep it's more or less right around this time that the beta emails should be going out.

I got a steam key on the humble page, but no email yet.

Well if you have the steam key, put it into steam. That should work. The steam page isn't down. (I looked and I have a steam key in my humble page too now.)

We just need to wait for steam to update (that'll happen in a few minutes according to a devs twittering)

If you haven't gotten an email, check your HumbleBundle page for your Starbound purchase. You'll get your key. Then put it in Steam and wait for Steam to update. Or the other way around could work too, might be better really.

Mine is all set up. I just need to download.... That will take awhile though.

My Steam client is downloading it, so it seems to be available now.

It's going rather slow for me though, only got 3MB so far...

I am getting less then 1 Kbs, but at least it's not just me.

Steam is being lame. My average DL speed has been 20 kb/s, with occasional jumps up to 2 mb/s.

Mine sped up at the end for a nice sustained download for the final 50%

I'm now uploading it to my server and going to test getting it running as a server. Looks like there's no support for whitelists, or accounts just yet, but might be able to set a password on the server. So if I get it working, I'll probably share details via PM.

It's alive! I have a Starbound server up.

If anyone wants to join me in dying over and over and generally not having a clue how to play, PM me for the details

One thing I found out is that you can use plant fibers to make fabric then use that to make bandages. That should help keep you healed.

Sleeping in your bed heals you as well.

Edit: If you hate the default controls enough to be bothered or have some legitimate reason to want to change the controls, i've been using http://www.autohotkey.com/ to remap my keyboard.

Also this thread has lots of tips
http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1s3uam/starbound_beta_tips_and_tricks_thread/

The general consensus is don't build the distress beacon until you've been to some higher level planets and are easily beating level 10-15 enemies. "Spoilers" as to why not to build the distress beacon in the thread above.

My current goal is to build the distress beacon, but I don't have anywhere near enough iron yet (luckily?).

I have some spiolers as to why myself, because I built it like a doofus:

Spoiler:
You get attacked by a boss monster upon using it. Building it isn't the problem, USING it is. The boss monster is a UFO that calls down an army of penguin-people who have guns that do a lot of damage. The UFO itself can probably one-shot you by dropping down on top of you, and it has a laser aswell.

That said, it shouldn't be too hard to rig the terrain in your favor when fighting it, as the UFO stays at a specific height over the ground and doesn't go through terrain, and the penguins are slow moving.

Also, Dark's server is pretty cool. Please don't take resources from it to your single player worlds. Do the other way around.

I have the password to the server if anyone wants it, but dark only wants it given to people who are whitelisted in minecraft.

That's not exactly what I meant I meant if I'm offline due to being asleep/commuting/zombie invasion etc, then someone who's already whitelisted on the Minecraft server is probably trustworthy enough to share the Starbound password with. But that's not an exclusive rule.

I'm definitely open to allowing access to those who have never played on the Minecraft server too.

I'm on right now by the way Recreated my Floran character because I felt I wanted more contrast in skin/foliage colors.

Meant to add - but if they're not already whitelisted on the Minecraft server, then they should only come directly to me for the password.

Yeah, I'll be checking the whitelist if someone asks me.

Found out how to make Meat Chunks, which are used in various cooking recipes: Cook the Cooked Alien Meat in a campfire.

Still figuring out how to make Alien Rib Meat and Alien Bacon.

I like what you did with the house. Looks good.

Hunting is becoming very difficult, mobs seem to be much more commonly dropping leather instead of meat :/

You should work your way up to an iron bow. If you can get on, I'm on again now.
