For anyone interested, the unstable version just got a massive update, carrying over from the nightly to it. You can swap to the unstable version in steam.

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

Played it all day with my brother yesterday. It's a spot buggy here and there but a massive improvement over the previous build. Also for me at the very least, a lot more enjoyable to play.

Massive update today. Finally! List of updated stuff is huge:
http://steamcommunity.com/games/211820/announcements/detail/159085165359951726

Spoiler:
The huge winter update is here!

After many months of work the winter update has finally been released. It contains more changes than we can list but below are some of the most obvious updates.

***Universe and Worlds***
Sectors have been removed, so all stars are part of the same map
Star and planet types correspond to difficulty levels, giving players access to progressively more extreme environments as they advance through the game
Added oceanic world types including tropical and arctic oceans, toxic and magma planets
Added rare Barren and Asteroid worlds with no monsters for large scale building
New biomes
New surface and underground mini biomes
Many changes to surface and underground terrain generation
Improvements to background parallaxes and sky coloration
***Ships and Navigation***
Player ships now include an AI avatar specific to each race that gives access to the player’s techs, missions, 3D printer, and a variety of ship-related commands
Each race’s ship has its own unique set of upgrades, giving players much more room to expand as they progress
Fuel costs for travel have been reworked. Moving between planets within a system is now free, while jumps to other systems require fuel in proportion to the distance traveled.
Coal no longer powers spaceships! Instead, they can use either radioactive ores or the new Liquid Erchius Fuel that now appears in Moon biomes
Many improvements to the Cockpit interface, which now indicates more detailed planet information including weather and environmental hazards
***Outpost***
The universe now has a civilized hub containing shops, quests, and other services. This is where players will find quests, missions, and ship upgrades which allow them to advance through the game
Includes a Sign Store based on the popular custom signs mod, where players can design and print their own signage for use in game
***Missions***
At key points in the progression, players will unlock special Missions
Missions take place in unique instanced dungeons containing special monsters, bosses, and rewards not available anywhere else
Some missions can be quite difficult, so you’ll want to prepare carefully - or bring friends!
***Novakids***
New playable race!
Unique progression of craftable guns
Unique progression of armor sets
Unique progression of ship upgrades
***Tech***
Techs are now split into head, body, legs and suit slots, so you can equip up to four at once!
Head techs provide various activated effects triggered using the tech hotkeys
Body techs provide lateral movement abilities triggered by double tapping direction keys
Leg techs provide vertical movement abilities triggered with the jump key
Suit techs provide passive protection from specific environmental hazards
New tech unlocking system makes a variety of techs visible each time the player upgrades their ship. The player can then use Blank Tech Cards to unlock and equip these techs
Many new techs
***Mining***
Matter Manipulator can now be upgraded over the course of the game to increase its mining power, area of effect, and allow it to collect liquids as well as blocks
Pickaxes and drills are more powerful, but have lowered durability and cannot be repaired, making them a consumable alternative to the Matter Manipulator
Smashable rocks found rarely underground contain richer deposits of certain ores
***Combat***
Energy regeneration has been changed. Rather than continuously regenerating energy at a slow rate, energy rapidly regenerates when not being used
Using energy that exceeds your maximum pool will disable energy usage for a few seconds until your energy has fully recharged
New weapon type staves!
Use a staff by holding the fire button to charge it, aiming, then releasing the button to unleash a powerful effect
Unlike guns, staves manifest their projectiles directly at your targeting cursor for precision combat
A variety of staves can be crafted at the new Manipulator Table
Beginning at Tier 5, armors are divided into three different progression paths with different stat balances
Separator armors have high armor and low energy for melee weapon users
Accelerator armors have a balance of armor and energy for ranged weapon users
Manipulator armors have low armor and high energy for staff users
Many new unique biome weapons
More bows (and crossbows) for higher level hunting
Many new thrown weapons of various tiers
Defense Turrets have been massively improved and can be equipped with a variety of weapons for different effects
***Monsters***
New monster type: large flying monsters
New monster type: large aquatic monsters
Many improvements to monster AI
Birds less of a menace
***Survival Mechanics***
Temperature has been replaced by a system of specific planetary hazards, which the player will need to unlock new technology to resist
Hunger has been removed for now, replaced by an expansion of the cooking system with a variety of buffs (see below)
New difficulty option to drop ores and other valuable materials on death
***Farming and Cooking***
New crops
Hundreds of new cooking recipes
Cooked foods now provide a wide variety of buffs, with more elaborate recipes giving stronger effects
***Bug Catching***
Bugs unique to each planet type now spawn across the universe
Use the bug net to collect and display them!
***Wiring***
Most lights in game can now be wired
More interactable switches
More sensors, switches, and logic gates
Fixed lots of usability bugs with wiring
***Other Content***
Many new status effects
Many new costumes
Many new biome furniture/object sets
Many new block types
Many (over 150) new underground microdungeons
Many new toys and novelty items
***Performance Enhancements***
Tile rendering
Liquid processing
Many other optimizations
***Miscellaneous Improvements***
Specialty hotbar slots and keys for Matter Manipulator, Wire Tool and Paint Tool
New font
Keybinding GUI
Character deletion option
***Modding Features***
Items are now scriptable
Status effects are now scriptable
New Script Console functionality gives a client-side scripted canvas to build your own GUIs, games, or whatever you can imagine
Many new Lua API bindings
***Server Features***
Access to tile protection system, preventing modification of specific dungeon IDs
Ability to set spawn point for a world
Several other new admin commands
rcon support

Looks like there's been a minor update. I couldn't login because my client updated to version 665 and the server was still on 664. So I've updated the server to 665 too.

Can't find any changelog for this minor update though :/

Might be related to a winxp crash. Which only happened on winxp. And only when you had the game in the program files folder on winxp.

... yeah. Microsoft-- pro coders extraordinaire!

Anyway started my mine to the core. didn't get many ores sadly, but got fairly far down.

Can you fix a pickaxe in the new version? The old applying ore to pickaxe didn't seem to work for me.

Nope. Pickaxes are now relegated to "fast but uses resources", while matter manips need to be upgraded but have no durability issues.

Seems to be a crash going on surrounding interacting with chests in a specific way, IDK how though.

Well, I can definitely tell it's still an alpha. Still, it's not that bad. And I think it's still fun, though they could still do stuff to make mining less tedious...

I'm having a blast with the latest release. I just love everything about it. Just beat the Penguin UFO (he's no longer the first boss) and am now on the hunt for moar titanium.

Dr. Zaius needs his robo-workbench!

Excellent! I've gotten to that point, too, plan on doing some more when I get free time, which admittedly hasnt' been often.

Okay, found a lot of various places I put teleporters to. I don't know if they'll help anyone but it'd be interesting to change them to be inhabited.

Can't wait until the Colonization feature is added...

New update for Starbound, Pleased Giraffe:

Changelog
Major issues
Colony System
Colonize your worlds! Create a home, decorate it nicely, then place a Colony Deed to attract a tenant!

The type of NPC who moves in will depend on the type and quality of the home’s furniture and decorations. Decorating a room with several objects from the same theme (such as a biome or material tier) will attract a tenant themed to match!
Keep your tenants happy and they’ll periodically offer you gifts, some cosmetic and some very useful

New Outpost Store: Frögg Furnishings

Sells Colony Deeds as well as a variety of furniture in many themes

The set of specialty furniture available will rotate each (out of game) day, so make sure you keep coming back to see the full selection

Each furniture set can be used to attract a particular tenant that fits its theme

Improvements to NPCs

NPCs will now interact with each other and with many different objects in the world. Depending on their personalities they might get sad, excited, fall in love or do all kinds of different things in different situations!

See who your tenants are and what they’re thinking! (press Alt to activate)

Added many unique NPC dialogue options and updated some old ones

Further improved NPC movement and pathfinding
NPCs now switch between ranged and melee weapons in combat depending on their available energy, range, and whether they can reach the player

Groups of NPCs now coordinate in combat to attack from different positions and divide themselves between ranged and melee

Surface Biomes and Sub-Biomes (Tiers 1 – 4)

Major visual improvements to background parallaxes

All biomes have several types of unique critters (60+)

Added a huge number of biome-specific microdungeons (450+)

Added many new biome-specific cosmetic armors and other items

Randomly generated monsters will now have color palettes that generally match the biome they spawn in

Universe and Planet Generation

Redesigned terrain to be more interesting and varied across all world types

Reduced the number of open caves on the surface, improved cave blending

Greatly increased the number of dungeons that can spawn on worlds and prevented dungeons from overlapping each other

Added ores in the background layer (feth yeah!)

Improved the appearance of planets in the navigation screen to better indicate the biome and surface liquid, added some visual variety to gas giants

Challenge Rooms

You can now find portals underground that lead to small instanced challenges. Defeat enemies, navigate dangerous traps or solve puzzles to earn great rewards!

Challenge portals disappear shortly after you enter, so you won’t be able to enter through the same portal twice.

Inventory and Merchants

You can now sell items to most merchants for a portion of their value

Added an ore merchant to the Outpost where you can purchase raw materials at an inflated price

Added a third inventory tab for objects (similar to the materials tab)

Added a sort button to the inventory window to sort items into their appropriate tabs

Items will not be automatically picked up into the hotbar and materials and objects won’t be automatically picked up when their respective tabs are full

Added an indicator to inventory tabs when they contain new items

Added an animation to highlight newly picked up items when switching to a tab

Tools and Interface

Wire and Paint tools are now unlockable modes for the Matter Manipulator and have clearer icons to indicate their functions

Inspection tool can now examine liquids, indicates when something is too dark to inspect, and doesn’t try to describe entities (such as monsters) that have no description set

Targeting will now prioritize monsters and NPCs at the cursor position, and won’t target passive monsters such as critters

Combat Changes (WIP)

Rebalanced all damage and armor values for players, NPCs and monsters

Reduced the damage per level increase of weapons and added a bonus damage stat on all tiered armors, allowing weapons to stay viable for longer

All randomly generated melee weapons have fancy new sprites

Reworked monster skills and added a windup animation. These will be further expanded and rebalanced in the next update.

Reworked weapon projectiles, increased bullet speed, added elemental damage types. These will be further expanded in the next update.

Progression Changes

Reworked the materials used for crafting progression, greatly reducing the total amount of ore required to advance through the game

Added various upgrade items which can be found throughout the world or acquired from quests, either whole or in pieces

Tech Card – can be crafted from Tech Chips, used to unlock new tech

Manipulator Module – can be crafted from Matter Module Components, used to improve your Matter Manipulator

Upgrade Module – used to improve utility items such as light packs

Improved many progression quests, but these will change much more in the future

Farming Changes

Crops now require water to grow! Tilled soil will initially be dry and needs to be moistened by a watering can, rain, or by dropping water on it

At each stage of a crop’s growth, it will consume the soil’s moisture and need to be watered again to progress further
Keeping crops under too much water for too long will cause them to be washed away, so be gentle!

And More!

200+ new objects and materials that can be bought, crafted or found in the world

Many changes to the Floran mission – Including a new boss
Improved chest loot and added improved graphics for standard and weapon chests

Added multiple upgrades for the lantern stick back item to improve its brightness

Racial flags can now be bookmarked as teleport destinations (but won’t enable you to teleport from underground)

Added particles and sounds to smashable objects and made many more objects (such as bushes and spikes) smashable

Reworked Status Pods to have more interesting and useful effects, including a chance to spawn ore or pixels

Added underground vines and more underground variety to several surface biomes

Experimental feature that shows NPC ‘status’ on occasion

Minor Changes

New characters will once again start on randomized worlds instead of sharing a single starter world!

Weather effects deposit snow and sand on tiles where appropriate

Ocean liquids become finite when enclosed by background blocks, and removing background blocks under the ocean will let the liquid in

Codexes will be automatically opened when learned

Environmental protection techs include protection from lower tier hazards and will be automatically equipped when learned

Flash breath bar when drowning

Sort recipes in crafting interface

Various performance improvements

Renamed ‘moon’ biome to ‘airless’ to avoid confusion among the astronomically knowledgeable

Added a shipyard to the Outpost, which will be used to purchase additional ship upgrades in the future

Fixed a bug causing monsters to spawn in player-built structures underground

Fixed several bugs related to weapons and monster attacks across the world wrap line

Fixed a bug causing NPC weapons to be rerolled when unequipped

Fixed a bug causing dungeon NPCs to spawn partially underground

Fixed a bug causing players to be stuck firing after respawn

Fixed a bug causing pets to eat whole stacks of food on the ground

Fixed a bug causing UI sound volume to be reduced too far by SFX slider

Lots of other balance and bug fixes

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
