Subject: CSM Legion Tactics
|

Morphing Obliterator
|
Since the release of Codex Space Marines, me and a lot of chaos players have wanted to see Tactics for the Traitor Legions like the Imperials got as it is very difficult (almost impossible in the case of the Alpha Legion) to make a fluffy Traitor Legion army, especially the Undivided ones. Without Further Ado: Chaos Space Marine Traitor Legion Tactics All of the following units in a Traitor Legion army gain the Veterans of the Long War rule at no additional cost. Chaos Lords Sorcerers Dark Apostles Warpsmiths All Named HQ Choices Chaos Terminators Chosen Plague Marines Noise Marines Thousand Sons Khorne Berzerkers Mutilators Possessed Chaos Space Marines Chaos Bikes Raptors Warp Talons Havocs Obliterators Select one of the following Legion Tactics for your primary detachment when making your army list (an allied detachment may bear a different Legion Tactic). Special Characters bear the same Legion Tactic as the detachment they are part of. Now onto the meat of this post. The individual rules for each Legion Tactic. Night Lords first: Legacy of Terror: All Night Lords with the Veterans of the Long War rule (whether given for free in the list above or paid for as normal) have the Night Vision and Fear special rules. In Midnight Clad: The Night Lords player can automatically force Night Fighting on the first turn of any game. In addition, Night Fighting can be extended to turn 2 on the D6 roll of 4+ if the Night Lords player chooses. Fear is for the Weak: All Night Lords with the Veterans of the Long War rule are immune to Fear. Unseen is the Greatest Fear (New Warlord Trait replacing Lord of Terror): Once per game, the Warlord and his unit gain the Stealth and Hit and Run USR's for a single game turn. Death from Above: Raptors are Troop choices in a Night Lords army. Chaos Daemons are classed as Allies of Convenience to a Night Lords army instead of Battle Brothers. Chaos Artifact Corona Nox (25pts) - All Night Lords within 12" of the bearer are classed as Stubborn. If the bearer is killed, mark the point where he fell. This point counts as an objective for the Night Lords player until the end of the game and is worth one VP if captured. The opposing player may not capture the point but can contest it. Shroud of Midnight (30pts) – The bearer and his unit gain the Shrouded special rule. Terror Grenades (2pts per model) – Any unit of Night Lords with the Veterans of the Long War rule may take terror grenades for 2pts per model. Any enemy unit assaulted by Night Lords with terror grenades must take their Fear test with a -2 penalty to the roll. Word Bearers next: - Up to 3 Dark Apostles may be taken as a single HQ choice. They may be equipped with Special Issue Wargear, including bikes, jump packs and Terminator armour. - Any Word Bearer unit joined by a Dark Apostle also gain the benefit of any Chaos Boon rolls made by the Apostle (including those gained from Gift of Mutation) with the exception of Chaos Spawn and Dark Apotheosis. When re-rolling Boons because of the Beseech the Dark Gods rule, roll twice for each Boon awarded and choose the result that will apply. - Allies from Codex Chaos Daemons use a normal force organization chart instead of the regular allies chart but may not generate a Warlord Trait or roll on the Warpstorm table. - A single unit of Possessed Chaos Space Marines may be taken as Troops to represent the Gal Vorbak. This unit may roll two dice for the Vessels of Chaos rule in each phase and choose the result that will apply. Master of Rites (New Warlord Trait replacing Master of Deception) The Dark Apostle leads his brethren in prayer before battle, shouting their praises to their immortal masters. To represent this, the Word Bearers player sacrifices the first turn (and may not attempt to seize the initiative), but every Word Bearer unit or vehicle in the army gains a 5+ invulnerable save for the first player turn as the Chaos gods grant their blessings to the Host. Chaos Artifacts Accursed Crozius (may only be carried by a Dark Apostle) – 30pts Range - Melee, Str - User + 2, AP4, Daemon Weapon, Rending Occularis Daemonica – 15pts The model bearing the Occularis gains the Ignore Cover and Soul Blaze special rules on all their shooting attacks. In addition, any unit with the Daemon special rule from Codex Chaos Space Marines or any unit of Daemon allies will not scatter when Deep Striking if they are placed within 12” of the bearer of the Occularis. Book of Lorgar – 20pts The Book of Lorgar can be read aloud at the start of the Chaos Assault Phase. All Word Bearers within 12” gain the Rage and Furious Charge special rules for this assault phase Now for my personal favourite, the Iron Warriors: - Up to 3 Warpsmiths may be taken per HQ choice. They may be equipped with Special Issue Wargear including bikes and jump packs. - One Forgefiend or Maulerfiend can be taken as Troops per Warpsmith in the army. These cannot be compulsory Troops choices. - Cultists may not be taken as compulsory choices in an Iron Warriors army - Fleshmetal is available as Special Issue Wargear for 20pts - Daemons are classed as Desperate Allies to an Iron Warriors army but Imperial Guard are classed as Battle Brothers (the Iron Warriors have large numbers of Traitor Guardsmen they can call upon) - All Iron Warriors gain the Stubborn and Counter Attack USR's as long as they are in a terrain piece giving them a cover save of at least 4+ (not including bonuses from Stealth, Shrouded or any other source) or any type of fortification. - Discipline of Iron (new warlord trait replacing Black Crusader) - This trait is activated at the start of the Chaos Turn. D3 Iron Warrior units or vehicles within 12" of the Warlord gain the Tank Hunters and Split Fire USR's until the start of the next Chaos turn. Chaos Artifacts Kai Gun - 30pts Range - 24" Strength - 5 AP - 3 Special - Assault, Daemon Weapon (the bearer takes a wound when a 1 is rolled for the number of shots in the shooting phase), Warpfire Warpfire - The Kai Gun ignores cover on any turn when a 6 is rolled for the number of shots. Forgebreaker – 50pts Originally wielded by the Primarch Pertuarbo, the mighty hammer Forgebreaker is held in stasis on Medrengard and from time to time a favored Champion may be given the honour of carrying it into battle in his Lord’s name. Range - Melee Str – User x 2 AP - 2 Special Rules – Concussive, Armourbane, Specialist Weapon Life Eater Virus – 40pts Once per game, the bearer of the Life Eater Virus may direct a strike at any point on the battlefield, using the following profile: Range - Unlimited Strength - 4 AP - 4 Special Rules – Barrage, Ordnance, Large Blast, Poisoned (2+), Ignore Cover, Orbital Orbital - Any shots that scatter do so 2d6" with no reduction for Ballistic Skill Next up, those sneaky little buggers, the Alpha Legion: - We are Alpharius - All Alpha Legion HQ choices and Aspiring Champions may re-roll failed Look out Sir rolls. This rule even takes effect against Precision Shots. - The enemy within - The Alpha Legion are famed for infiltrating enemy space marine forces and subverting them from within. The Alpha Legion treat allies from Codex Space Marines as Battle Brothers but these allies may not select a Chapter Tactic. To avoid suspicion, no Alpha Legion model may have the Daemon special rule when taking space marine allies. Amendment to Master of Deception : An Alpha Legion Warlord who rolls this Trait may use it to infiltrate D3+2 Alpha Legion units (not allies) instead of the normal D3. Addition to Chaos Cultists – Cultists may upgrade their auto pistols to sniper rifles for + 5pts per model. -Warlord Trait (replacing Black Crusader) Heads of the Hydra If an Alpha Legion Warlord is removed as a casualty, then another HQ in the army immediately steps up as the new Warlord and inherits the original Warlord Trait rolled at the start of the game. The Alpha Legion’s opponent is only awarded the VP for Slay the Warlord if this second HQ is also killed. If a second HQ is not available, this Trait has no effect. Ranged Weapon Upgrade Special Issue Ammo – 5 pts per model. This upgrade may be taken by Characters and Chosen Squads. Any unit with Special Issue Ammo can use one the following ammo types per shooting phase (only with boltguns or combi weapons fired as boltguns): Incendiary round – Ignores Cover High Velocity Round - Shred Hydra Round – Hydra Rounds are designed to split into two independent warheads during flight, potentially slaying twice as many foes as an ordinary Bolt round. Bolt weapons using Hydra Rounds are treated as weapons with the Assault 2 type. Daemon Eye Rounds – Weapon type changed to Heavy, Sniper and range increased to 30” when using Daemon Eye Rounds. Chaos Artifacts Chameleon Armour – 35 pts The character wearing the Armour must be held in Reserve at the start of the game. When he becomes available, he may immediately be placed in any Alpha Legion unit on the board with the same majority armour type as himself (i.e. a Lord in Terminator armour must be placed in a unit with either Terminator Armour or Fleshmetal). The character may even be placed into a transport vehicle (replace a model of your choosing from the unit) or close combat (in which case he counts as charging this turn). Hydra Operatives – 25pts Prior to the battle, Alpha Legion agents behind enemy lines have disrupted supply columns and delayed reinforcements. To represent this, the Alpha Legion may force his opponent to put D3 of his units into Reserve before the battle begins. This rule may not be used to cause the opponent to have no models on the board (therefore avoiding an instant defeat). Next up, Black Legion. As per Black Legion supplement but all characters and units in the list above get Veterans of the Long War for free like other Traitor Legions. Black Legion may use each of the following abilities once per game (may not be used on Khorne Berzerkers, Plague Marines, Noise Marines or Thousand Sons or any type of vehicle): Blood for the Blood God: One unit in the army gains the Rage and Hatred rules for a single assault phase. If the unit chosen has the mark of Khorne, they gain Furious Charge as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Assault Phase. Change is Power: The Black Legion player may select a non vehicle unit each turn to roll on the Chaos Boon table, re-rolling Chaos Spawn and Dark Apotheosis results. If the unit has the Mark of Tzeentch, they may re-roll the result. Each result from the table only lasts until the next Chaos turn. Ecstatic Glories: One unit in the army gains the Fleet and Shred (close combat only) USR's. If the chosen unit has the Mark of Slaanesh, they gain Rending as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Assault Phase. Remorseless Decay: One unit in the army gains the Poisoned 4+ rule for their shooting attacks. If the chosen unit has the Mark of Nurgle, then this is increased to Poisoned 3+. This ability lasts for one Chaos Shooting Phase. These abilities must be allocated at the start of the relevant phase before any to hit rolls or charge distance rolls are made. Now the mono god Legions, Death Guard first. Death Guard - The only mark that may be taken is the Mark of Nurgle (all units that can take the mark must have it and any units that cannot take it cannot be used) Vehicles may be chosen freely - Daemon Princes may only be Daemons of Nurgle - If Daemon allies are taken, may only be Daemons of Nurgle - Plague Marines are Troops with or without a Chaos Lord - Plague Marine Terminators – 157pts Name WS BS S T W I A LD SV Death Guard Terminator 4 4 4 5 1 3 2 9 2+/5++ Champion 4 4 4 5 1 3 2 9 2+/5++ Unit Type: Infantry Squad: 1 Champion and 2 Death Guard Terminators. May include up to 7 Death Guard Terminators extra at +49pts each. Equipment – Combi bolter, power weapon, Blight Grenades, Mark of Nurgle (included in profile above) Special Rules – Fearless, Feel No Pain, Bulky, Champions of Chaos (Champion only). Options – As per Terminator entry in Codex Chaos Space Marines. Chaos Artifacts Plague Sword – 35pts Range – Melee Str – User AP -3 Special – Daemon Weapon, Poisoned Attacks (4+) Plague Banner (may be taken for one unit instead of Icon of Fear) – 25pts The unit carrying the Banner counts as a Psyker (Mastery Level 2), who knows the Plague Wind psychic power from the Discipline of Plague. If the unit should suffer a Perils of the Warp attack from using the Banner, then no wounds are suffered but the Banner cannot be used again during the battle. The Lantern – 30pts Range – 12” Str – 8 AP – 1 Type – Assault 2, Blast, Gets Hot, -Warlord Trait (replaces Flames of Spite) Choking Fog – One use only. Used in the enemy shooting phase. For this shooting phase and the following assault phase, the Warlord and all Death Guard within 6” of him gain the Shrouded special rule. In addition, all enemy units wishing to assault the Warlord or Death Guard within 6” of him must roll as if they were assaulting through difficult terrain. Thousand Sons - The only mark that may be taken is the Mark of Tzeentch (all units that can take the mark must have it and any units that cannot take it cannot be used) Vehicles may be chosen freely - Daemon Princes may only be Daemons of Tzeentch - If Daemon allies taken, may only be Daemons of Tzeentch - Thousand Sons are Troops with or without a Chaos Sorceror - Thousand Sons Terminators – 163pts Name WS BS S T W I A LD SV Thousand Sons Terminator 4 4 4 4 1 4 2 9 2+/3++ Aspiring Sorceror 4 4 4 4 1 4 2 9 2+/3++ Unit Type: Infantry Squad: 1 Sorceror and 2 Thousand Sons Terminators. May include up to 7 Thousand Sons Terminators extra at +51pts each. Equipment – Combi bolter, power weapon, Force weapon (Sorceror only), Inferno Bolts (only applies to combi weapons fired as boltguns or heavy bolters), Mark of Tzeentch, Sigil of Corruption (included in profile above) Special Rules – Fearless, Bulky, Champions of Chaos (Sorceror only). Mastery Level 1 (Sorceror only), Veterans of the Long War Options – As per Terminator entry in Codex Chaos Space Marines. May take one Heavy Bolter with Inferno Bolts per 5 models in the unit for + 20pts each. Amendment to Thousand Sons entry – The Sorceror Commands: While the Aspiring Sorceror is alive, the Thousand Sons unit may run in the shooting phase and fire Overwatch if assaulted. If the Sorceror dies, then the Thousand Sons lose direction and may no longer run or fire Overwatch when assaulted. Chaos Artifacts Sword of Change 40pts - Range – Melee Str – User AP – 3 Special Rules – Daemon Weapon, Final Mutation Final Mutation - - Any enemies suffering an unsaved wound from the Sword of Change during a challenge turn into a chaos spawn if they fail a Toughness test (the Chaos character still gets to make a Boon roll for this). The Spawn is then placed in coherency with the bearer of the sword and piles into the same close combat. If a Spawn model is not available or cannot be placed subject to the normal restrictions, then the Spawn is not created and the enemy model is removed from play. Invulnerable saves may be taken against this, but not armour or cover saves. Eye of Tzeentch – 15pts The bearer of the Eye may re-roll a single dice per player turn for one of the following: To hit roll, to wound roll, armour save, invulnerable save Scrolls of Magnus (Amendment) As per Codex Chaos Space Marines, but the bearer becomes a Psyker (Mastery Level 2) and may choose their Discipline from the options in Codex Chaos under the Scrolls of Magnus entry. In addition, one power rolled may be swapped for the Primaris power. Warlord Trait – Treason of Tzeentch (Replaces Lord of Terror) The Warlord counts as Psyker (Mastery Level 1) who only knows the Puppet Master power from the Telepathy Discipline and may cast it despite only having 1 Warp Charge available. The Warlord takes a psychic test as normal to cast the power. If the test is passed, the power is resolved as normal. If it is failed, however, then the opponent may instead choose a unit from the Thousand Sons army within range to be the target of the power. Emperors Children - The only mark that may be taken is the Mark of Slaanesh (all units that can take the mark must have it and any units that cannot take it cannot be used) Vehicles may be chosen freely - Daemon Princes may only be Daemons of Slaanesh - If Daemon allies are taken, may only be Daemons of Slaanesh - Noise Marines are Troops with or without a Chaos Lord - Emperors Children Havocs may purchase up to 4 blastmasters in place of usual heavy weapons for +30pts each. - Noise Marine Terminators – 148pts Name WS BS S T W I A LD SV Noise Marine Terminator 4 4 4 4 1 5 2 9 2+/5++ Champion 4 4 4 4 1 5 2 9 2+/5++ Unit Type: Infantry Squad: 1 Champion and 2 Noise Marine Terminators. May include up to 7 Noise Marine Terminators extra at +46pts each. Equipment – Sonic Blaster, power weapon, Mark of Slaanesh (included in profile above) Special Rules – Fearless, Bulky, Champions of Chaos (Champion only). Options – As per Terminator entry in Codex Chaos Space Marines. May also take one Blastmaster per 5 models at + 30pts each instead of a Reaper Autocannon or Heavy Flamer. Champion may take a Doom Siren for +15pts. Warlord Trait – Perfect Warrior (replaces Lord of Terror) The Warlord never hits on worse than a 3+ in close combat. If his normal to hit roll would be 3+ anyway, he may re-roll any dice that fails to hit as well. Chaos Artifact – Laeran Blade – 35pts Range – Melee Str – User AP – 3 Special Rules – Daemon Weapon, Rending, Shred Chaos Artifact – Whip of Agony – 40pts Range – Melee Str – User AP – 2 Special Rules – Concussive, Blind Special Issue Wargear – Combat Drugs + 15pts Roll a D6 to determine effect: 1. User takes one wound with no armour or cover saves allowed 2. + 1 Attack 3. + 1 WS 4. Fleet 5. + 1 Strength 6. Preferred Enemy : Current opponent World Eaters - The only mark that may be taken is the Mark of Khorne (all units that can take the mark must have it and any units that cannot take it cannot be used) Vehicles may be chosen freely - All World Eaters gain the Adamantium Will and Hatred (Psykers) special rules - Daemon Princes may only be Daemons of Khorne - If Daemon allies are taken, may only be Daemons of Khorne - Khorne Berzerkers are Troops with or without a Chaos Lord - Khorne Berzerker Terminators – 148pts Name WS BS S T W I A LD SV World Eaters Terminator 5 4 4 4 1 4 3 9 2+/5++ Champion 5 4 4 4 1 4 3 9 2+/5++ Unit Type: Infantry Squad: 1 Champion and 2 World Eater Terminators. May include up to 7 World Eater Terminators extra at +46pts each. Equipment – Combi bolter, power weapon, Mark of Khorne Special Rules – Fearless, Bulky, Champions of Chaos (Champion only). Options – As per Terminator entry in Codex Chaos Space Marines. Chaos Artifact – Axe of Blind Fury – as per Codex Chaos Space Marines Chaos Artifact – Blood Amulet – 15pts The Blood Amulet serves to induce in the followers of Khorne an even higher state of bloodthirsty rage. The bearer of the Amulet and any unit he is with may run and assault in the same turn and gain the Hammer of Wrath special rule to represent the speed and fury of their assault. If the unit already has the Hammer of Wrath special rule, add + 1 strength to all Hammer of Wrath attacks the unit makes. Chaos Artifact – Collar of Khorne – 25pts The bearer of the Collar of Khorne always counts as being the same Mastery Level as any enemy Psyker who attempts to cast a Malediction psychic power on him or his unit (therefore always rolling a 4+ to Deny the Witch). Please note the Collar will stack with Adamantium Will for a total 3+ Deny the Witch roll for the bearer of the Collar and his unit. The bearer is also immune to the Instant Death effect caused by Force Weapons. Warlord Trait – Martial Pride (replaces Master of Deception) The Warlord gains the Preferred Enemy special rule when fighting in close combat against an opponent with a Weapon Skill equal to or higher than his own, or against an Independent Character or Monstrous Creature. I would love to hear all your thoughts!

I've started to work on a version and seems we have some similar ideas.
Maybe we both finish off and then have a meeting of minds and do a combined effort afterwards?
Looking pretty good so far!

Hmmm, I feel Black Legion should get something akin to Ultramarines, to show how multi-faction it is. Like say from these options:
Option 1: Four buffs, Each one that improves a basic unit, but it buffs Marked Unit of God X better (One for each, basis being the Black Legion Warbands such as Hounds of Abbadon, Children of Torment, Sons of the Cyclops, Bringers of Decay)
Option 2: Three Buffs, similar to C:SM, however instead it'll buff any unmarked and marked unit normally, it'll grow stronger if used on Chosen Squads (Basis, the elite Black Legion Legionnaires being far better in their tactics)
This being MARKED units, not CULT units. To make sure to differentiate.

I like everything, except being unable to take Marks on models.
I really like your Iron Warriors, and Word Bearers.
If I may make a suggestion, for Word Bearers, perhaps Daemons could have an altered Allie Chart. Like, for instance "When Daemons are selected as allies for Word Bearers, they follow the same FOC as if they were a primary detachment, except they do not benefit from A Warlord trait or the Warpstorm Table"

I have taken some of your ideas into account:
- Marks are now available for HQ and Elite choices in Traitor Legion armies (Black Legion have no restrictions)
- Daemons allied to Word Bearers use the normal FOC instead of the allies one but cannot take a warlord trait or roll on the warpstorm table
- Black Legion now have 4 one use abilities like Ultramarines, which improve if the chosen target has a specific Mark of Chaos

Checking the new abilities:
Change is Power: One unit in the army becomes a level 1 Psyker subject to the Brotherhood of Sorcerors rule and is able to select from Biomancy, Telepathy or Pyrokinesis powers. If the chosen unit has the mark of Tzeentch, it instead becomes a level 2 Psyker and must choose one of its powers from the Tzeentch discipline in Codex Chaos Space Marines.
This ability lasts until the unit suffers a Perils of the Warp Attack.
This is kinda weird, and might be a bit much, granting psyker to someone who hasn't had it? Maybe something involving the Boon Table instead.
Remorseless Decay: One unit in the army gains the Fleshbane rule for it's shooting attacks. If the chosen unit has the Mark of Nurgle, they gain Armourbane as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Shooting Phase.
However this is too much, imagine lascannons or autocannons with Armourbane and you'll need no melta against AV14, along with the fact bolters will be doing massive amounts of wounds to units and vehicles as well.
Blood for the Blood God: One unit in the army gains the Rage and Hatred rules for a single assault phase. If the unit chosen has the mark of Khorne, they gain Furious Charge as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Assault Phase.
This is good, simple and effective and khornate.
Ecstatic Glories: One unit in the army gains the Fleet and Shred (close combat only) USR's. If the chosen unit has the Mark of Slaanesh, they gain Rending as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Assault Phase.
Also good and simple without being too much.

I see your point. This has been changed to allow the BL player to choose a unit each turn and have them roll on the boon table.
Remorseless Decay: One unit in the army gains the Fleshbane rule for it's shooting attacks. If the chosen unit has the Mark of Nurgle, they gain Armourbane as well. This ability lasts for one Chaos Shooting Phase.

I have changed this to poisoned 4+ for one turns shooting, or poisioned 3+ with the Mark of Nurgle.

Love this, very Tzeentch, constant change!
They seem more balanced out now as well, but I'll have to try them later.

With that in mind, I have come up with the following Legion Tactics for Undivided Legions. I figure that the Legions that worship one of the Chaos Gods (Death Guard etc) can already represent their Legions fairly well as they have Marks, Cult Troops, some wargear items and a special character each. I might revisit them later but I am focusing on the undivided legions for now.
I would say that the mono god legions would have the following.
Every unit that can take a mark must take the mark.
Mark of the specific god is 1 point cheaper.
Cult troops are troops even without a lord in the army
IE
Deathguard:
Plague Marines are troops
may only include troops with MoN or DoN. may take vehicles with no mark.
any unit upgrading to MoN or DoN pays 1 less point per model than listed

Just another suggestion to further improve a Chaos Space Marine codex, which I hope you will agree of:
A great wish I have is to let ALL kinds of Aspiring Champions have the option of taking Terminator Armour like in the good old days!
It would follow the background and solve so many problems too:
- Making a bigger difference between Tactical Space Marine squads and Chaos Space Marine squads.
- Underline the fact that Chaos hierarchy is also influenced by raw power.
- Would reduce the negativity of Champion of Chaos.
- I'm sure there's a lot angles from which this would follow the background and enhance the feeling of playing a Chaos Space Marine codex.

Though the corrupted Space Marines of the Traitor Legions make excellent champions for the gods of Chaos, they are not pawns and have their own agendas of vengeance, empire-building vindication or arcane study which gives them purpose. |

The Space Puppies Players would complain that it infringes on them, even though we had Chosen Terminators and the like before.

I also miss the days when chosen were split up across the army like wolf guard.
Having them as a glorified special weapon squad is not what they should be imo. I mean, these guys are next in line for the chaos lord's position if he snuffs it!

The Furious Charge is kinda meek, since a unit with moK can allready have FC via the Icon of Wrath.
Give them Prefered Ennemy or Rampage instead.

Not rampage, while it would be funny, I think it might be a bit much on a potential 10+ models.

I like these but I'd avoid the "Alpha Legion treat C:SM units as BB" since that can mean Chaos Space Marines can buff regular marines and vice versa. And you'll have Heldrakes and Stormravens in the same army.
Also, I think it's little unfair that Night Lords can extend Night Fighting for another turn on a 4+. Maybe make it a 5 or 6+? That way you don't have a situation where people put Oblits with a Lord and, for two turns, can shoot all they want at the enemy without worry of being hit since they have stealth. You can also spam a bunch of Raptors and just running them up for two turns with a constant cover save.

I see your point about CSM and SM, but is that any worse than having riptides and wraithknights in the same army?
I think it is OK personally for the Night Lords to be able to extend night fighting for one turn on a 4+, but I could be persuaded to reduce it to 5+.
IIRC though, Imhotek the Stormlord gets to keep night fight going for as many turns as he wants on a 4+ and gets free lightning shooting at the enemy to go with it.

Imotekhs extended night fight and lighting is based on the Turn number, he needs to roll higher than the current turn number, with it automatic for the first turn.

For Alpha Legion's "adaptive tactics," I know stores, and groups that let everyone do that with the BRB already. We still only get something useful about half the time. Maybe edit that to an improved version of master of deception. Infiltrating infantry units would definitely sound like Alpha Legion.

Wow, that are some op rules and gear that you want to introduce.
Shroud of Midnight - i'd cope with just a shrowd to a unit. But snapshots is TOO much.
Making lords apostles for just 20 extra points? Noone will ever take apostles than. Never ever. It's better to just buff apostles a bit and allow them to take such things like bikes and jumppacks. Also, i'd love to see a better version of rerolling on chaos boon table. Make it armywide! It's allready a table that has >50% useless stuff. I've tried playing with mass boons for everyone and apostle, but his rule allows rerolling only for the ones he's attached to. For example, this units had gift of mutation:
Last game - Apostle, Sorc, Possesed champion (2 boons), 1000 son'z sorc - 50 pts for gifts.
Usefu buffs: 1000 son'z sorc gained hatred, Apostle gained +1 attack - however, he didn't get in a fight cause he was footslogging with cultists and regular footslogas can't get in a fight if the enemy doesn't want them to be there
Semi-useful buffs: Possessed champ gained +1 ini - rather useless cause he has no nades but still.
So, basically, hatred for 50 pts even with 4 of the boons being rerollable cause i had apostle, sorc and possessed in 1 group at the start.
The game before - Apostle, Sorc, Possesed champion (2 boons) - 40 pts for gifts.
Useful buffs: Possesed champion gained Crusader and Hatred. Crusader is a great buff for footslogas and mellee-oriented guyz. Sorc gained +1 attack.
Still not enough to make back the cost but crusader came handy on possessed.
Another game before - Apostle, Sorc, Raptor's champ, Csm champ - 40 pts for gifts
Useful buffs: Apostle gained +1 attack that helped him in killing a C'Tan shard with a help of 5 rerolls from cultists in a challenge. Sorc gained +1 armor.
Now that's somewhat close to what i payed for cause of a 2+ armor on sorc and +1 attack on apostle.
Another game before - Apostle, Sorc, Csm Champ, Biker Champ - 40 pts for gifts
No useful buffs at all
So, over the course of some games i came to a conclusion that gifts are not worth taking. Even with apostle. Though, if they cost less, they'd have some uses, however, you have more chances to gain something useless. So, why not spend this 40-50 pts on something you know will work. Or we could probably lower the price for gifts considerably. Like 3-5 pts for characters and 5-7 for indeps.
Also, possessed are very bad. They're not very tough, not fast, don't hit than hard, don't score and cost ALOT. Even when i tried them out with a 18 pt cost (ofc, we discussed it with the opponent), all they managed to do is wreck a rhino and get stuck in a fight with tactical marines for 2 turns. And they had a sorc with them spamming endurance. If there was no sorc with them, the fight could last the whole game or at least untill they rolled ap3 on weapons. Anywayz, they cost almost like termies and are way worse than even termies are.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
And s6 ap2 poisoned 2+ ID ordnance barrage...come on. Make it scatter 3d6 even with hits than. Without bs reduction.
But what i'd do is just s4 ap4 poisoned 2+, Ignore Cover, Ordnance Barrage that scatters 2d6 without bs reduction. And make it cost around 25-30.
Why ap4? It's a virus! And armor with 3+ or better are usually solid enough to prevent outer air come inside without filtrating.

I disagree with restricting special characters to their Legions.
It heavily restricts homebrew armies.

Made a few changes based on comments:
- Reduced Shroud of Midnight to 30pts and removed the rule regarding snapshots
- Removed rule upgrading Chaos Lords to Dark Apostles
- Lowered strength and ap of life eater virus and removed instant death, increased scatter to 2d6" with no reduction for BS
Lowered cost to 40pts
- Changed mono god Legions to be able to select any vehicle (this was bad wording on my part)
Any more thoughts? Thanks for the interest so far!

I don't see why this is a problem. The SM codex has the same restiction with their special characters and their Chapter Tactics.
How often does an SC fight for a force not of their Legion anyway? There is nothing stopping you from using a set of Legion Tactics to represent a homebrew Warband if that is what you want to do (and there is an SC you want to use). Automatically Appended Next Post: Also meant to add that a detachment from Codex CSM or Black Legion may select another detachment with a different Legion Tactic as allies.

Eh, I dunno, that's just me. The restriction for SM never made sense to me anyway.
Perhaps it's just because I like to have my counts-as-Black-Legion led by counts-as-Khârn.
But then, I am not a fan of in-codex restrictions of this type in general. (Allies is a whole other thing, mind...)

Perhaps if a character is not fighting as part of their Legion (e.g. Kharn in Black Legion) then they don't benefit from any Legion Tactic at all (as they are not with their own warriors) or they lose their regular tactic (e.g World Eaters) and have to take the other one (Black Legion in this case)?
Trying to find a way to make it work while also keeping fluff in mind.
Although I personally like the new way as seeing characters from one marine chapter in another all the time got kinda annoying (like all the times I heard about Vulkan or Khan selling his services to other chapters).
