I recently began working on an idea I've had for a while now, an WW1 era British Army themed Imperial Guard army. Not the most original idea I know but still, I really like the look of the historical uniforms. I picked up a Cadian Battleforce as well as some extra bits from Kromlech and West Wind Productions and here is my first group:

Spoiler:

As well as the extra bits I also added GS shin wraps and shaved the forward sights off the lasgun. The colour scheme I went for was inspired by this image:
Spoiler:

I hoping to create (at least for now) a command squad, sentinel and heavy weapons teams as well. So I'm basically looking for some constructive criticism or some suggestions as to where I should go from here. I have a blog (link in the signature) which I will be updating regularly as this project continues.

They look super. Nice job. Are you planning on any additional debris on the base?

I have got a huge bag of model making match sticks to use as duck boards. With the first 5 guys I was mainly concentrating on the models, but now they are finished I can definitely see that a more scenic base would look better.

A little bit of rusty wire, to add some orange and metal to the base would break up the brown a bit.

I'm currently working on a Heavy Weapons team. I have used the Auto-cannon from the Heavy Weapons team but decided against mounting it onto a tripod. Instead I have created a gun carriage from a 1/72 scale German Wagon.
I have drawn inspiration from the WW1 field guns such as the 13 pounder.

I still need to create the crew and a nice scenic base for it but here is the progress so far:

I will be watching this project with interest. Any particular direction that you are going with this army? My WW1 army for example is focusing on heavy artillery.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

They look really good. You nailed the colour scheme.

I probably would have gone with glowy eye lenses on the masks, just to add that scifi-ness back in a little, and they could possible use a little more colour on the bases just to break up the mass of brown-tone a little. Adding squad markings in white on their shoulders will help them to 'pop' a little more as well.

Off to a lovely start, though.

They look really good. It's probably a bit late, but have you seen Victoria Minaitures Lasguns? Really have a nice late-19th/early-20th century vibe.

I like your gun carriages. I mounted my lascannons on Toy soldier gun carriages, but yours look more in scale. Artillery'ish heavy weapons look great for WW1 style guardsmen.

The other thing you might try is weathering powers around the legs. You did a nice job of making muddy bases, but the boots and gaiters are pristine.

Yeh I came across these, frustratingly, after I had already started the project. But I will definitely be getting some of Victorias other stuff for my next project.

I agree they do look awfully pristine considering they have been living and fighting in muddy trenches. I'll mud them up a bit and post some pictures soon. Thanks the support and suggestions so far!

OK I think that following the construction of my heavy weapons team I want to tackle a veteren/stormtrooper squad. I want to set them apart without diverging from the theme. After some research I came across an image of trench armour (see below)

This should be easy enough to replicate with GS or plasticard. I really like this look as a basis but would like some input as to what else I could do.

I saw what you did with the name ...

I think muddying up the legs could be as simple as getting some of your basing material and subsequent wash over the boot tops and leggings during the basing process and then following up some brown pigments to tie everything together.

Yeh Fossam (latin for trench) was my original basis for the name, but I changed my mind about it. Instead I found the old English word 'ærgewinn' which means ancient struggle, former agony, former strife or troubled old warfare which pretty much sums up WW1. So I decided on Argewinn Rifles instead, which I personally think sounds better.

Really like these you've definitely got the WW1 style and scheme coming through.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Quick update, here is the first stage of the scenic base for the heavy weapons team. Once the GS is dry I'll cover it with fine sand and add some razor wire to the three stakes.

Spoiler:

I have taken some stage by stage pics of my foot wrap creation on the guardsmen. If anyone is interested I will upload them as a tutorial tomorrow.

Probably, I just need to find a model kit that is the correct scale and figure out a way to keep it with the theme. But I really do like the look of those first tanks.

My Kolony Command Heads arrived from Pig Iron Productions so I got to work on the second half of the my Infantry Squad. The sergeant makes use of one of the new heads, I thought the cap would help him to stand out from the rest of the squad. I also made a slight conversion to the Vox Caster, I didn't thought that the vox pack looked a little too techy for the look I was going for. Instead I clipped a couple of aerials from the vox pack and glued them to a Kromlech backpack.

Spoiler:

I based this half of the squad slightly differently, I added some strips of distressed styrene sheet to represent duckboards. I will add sand to the rest of the base before painting.

These came out fantastically. Very authentic.

I like the idea for the Stormtroopers, having a more understated armour. Just make sure it is obvious on the table, otherwise it could get confusing. Different colours or perhaps regimental markings or kill markings on obvious areas could help with this.

I have some of the Max Mini greatcoat legs on their way to me that I plan to use for the stormtroopers. I think it will help to define them without breaking too much from the theme.

After completing the assembly of my infantry squad I thought I would have a go at something a little different so I decided to build my sentinel. I went for the Armageddon style enclosed cab (protection from gas attacks) and made a couple of small additions. I wanted the sentinel to feel as though it is un-perfected technology, so I added a few extra pipes and tanks. I also added a couple of armor plates to the upper sections of the legs as well as a storage compartment behind the cab.

Like with the other conversions, I have tried to keep it subtle and not go too overboard with it. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions.

Even though I should probably be finishing off some painting I couldn't resist starting my Grenadiers (stormtroopers/veterens).

I wanted them to stand out from the rank file whilst steel feeling like the rest of the army. This meant that the current Stormtrooper miniatures wouldn't do. Instead I went for the maxmini greatcoat legs, I felt like this would add that air of elite to the standard Cadian kit. I also felt that the west wind production heads were a little bland for my needs, therefore I went for the Maxmini Neobrit Trencher heads. They still had the tommy helmet and gas mask but looked a little more 'techy'. To represent the Hot shot lasgun I added a pipe from the lasgun magazine to backpack. To finish off, I added some GS cuffs and an extra shoulder plate.

For the sergeant I used the bionic arm from the command squad sprue, mainly because I really like the sabre and I think some bronze bionic gizmos will give it that industrial era look.

Let me know what you think.
