Subject: The Strengths of the NEW Tyranids - Foundation for Competitive Tyranids (Tyranid Update List p.240)
I personally think BS/LW is better. tag did some stats pages ago and the BS/LW version came out on top IIRC
@ everyone
So I have a unique challenge tomorrow, the store manager has 10 Lychguard models with Hyperphase Swords and Dispersion fields that is 300 points total.
The challenge is that you may only take one unit and spend up to 300 points. Other restrictions include only one unit, no characters and no Flyers/FMC's.
Personally I think two Dakkafexen in a unit (300 exact) should be able to handle it, but what would you bring?
30 Devilgaunts might do the trick. 90 Str4 shots should do some damage, plus give a few toxin sacs for when they get charged.

If you shoot and then charge it should kill 6-7 Lychguard. 3.3 in shooting and 3.3 in the assault.

The 6th ed Codex is mostly better than the 5th ed one.

2 Dakkafexes kill 2.66 Lychguard per turn. 30 Devilgants kill 3.33. The both kill 1.1 more in overwatch.
So if we figure 1 round of shooting and then they assault you. 2 Carnifexes are in with 6.24 Lychguard, 30 Devingants are in with 5.55.
Fexes and Lychguard swing at the same time. 1 Carnifex dies, and 0.55 Lychguard go down. So that is doomed.
DevilGants swing 1st. If they have poison they take out another 1.66 Lychguard (though possibly not all of them pile in). Lychguard then kill 6.48 gants. 2nd round Gants kill 1.30 more Lychguard, and take 2.87 more casualties. 3rd round Gants kill 1.15 more Lychguard, and take 1.42 more casualties. Combat ends in Gants favor on round 5. However for this result to come to pass you need quite a few synapse and very, very low leadership checks to go your way.
Personally I would go with 9 Shrikes (Scytals, Scytals, and Toxin Sacs) (297 points). They are fast, and should get the charge. If they do and they swing 1st it looks like this. They kill 3.33 Lychguard, the Shrikes lose 1 Base, and another base takes 1.44 wounds. Shrikes kill 2.37 Lychguard, the Shrikes lose 1 Base (2.86 Wounds) Shrikes kill 2.07 Lychguard, the Shrikes take 1.48 wounds but do not lose a base. So there are 7 Shrikes left. 5 have full wounds, 2 have taken some wounds. Meanwhile there are 3.54 Lychguard left. Because the Lychguard no longer have the ability to inflict 3 wounds per round, The Shrikes can use wound allocation to stay at 7 models until they finish them off in 2-3 more rounds of combat.
Even if Lychguard get the charge or the Shrikes charge through terrain, the Shrikes should win. Warriors do the same thing. A similar result for Raveners, but they aren't fearless and have IB, so you've got to make a 5 or 6 Leadership on that 1st round of combat.
A Tfex with Acid Spray, Desiccator Larva, Toxin Sacs, and regen probably wins eventually, but the combat would take like 20 rounds, and if you start rolling 1's it could go the other way.
I was curious. Genestealers are massively overcosted, and I wanted to see how they would do. 20 Genestealers (280 Points) Lose to the Lychguard even if they get the charge. After 9 rounds of combat. 2 Lychguard survive and 0 Genestealers.
That's really interesting because 30 Hormagants with Toxin Sacs put down 1/2 of the Lychguard on the turn they charge.

With careful positioning and some luck, it could be possible to wipe out the Lychguard after 2 turns of shooting and 1 assault.

Synapse may be an issue, not to mention that without Synapse, they are at risk of getting swept in combat.

I usually run mine with Reaper, Egrubs and Old Adversary, although I haven't really experimented with LW+BS over the Reaper or with Maws Claws. I suppose the Maws Claws is cheap enough to throw it on, though I usually don't expect too many of my gargoyles to survive for very long to really take advantage of it. In any case, my preferred weapon of choice is the Reaper of Obliterax for my SkyTyrant.

You aren't going to get 2 rounds on shooting (at least not with all 30) and the charge, but more important, you have to make several rounds of instinctive behavior on leadership 6, and you are going to fail that most of the time. Shrikes or Warriors work much better. Raveners are better because if they fail IB they don't get hurt quite as bad.

You could try by carefully placing all your models on a long line so most of them are 18" (no more and no less) of the Lychguard and then hope he doesn't gets a when charging (1/36 of chance, so unlikely).
But you are right about the lack of synapse.

From a Theory Hammer point of view I was pretty convinced by LW+BS, but I did go 5 rounds of combat the other day between my 430 points Skytyrant unit, and a 95 point Deff Dread. Even with Old Adversary I couldn't pull off 3 Smashes. In that moment I was wishing I had the Reaper. It would have helped a tiny bit against the Warbikers that held me up for the Deff Dread to charge me. I was wounding on 3's rerolling 1's. With RoO I would have been wounding on 2's rerolling 1's. We tied on the turn they charged because I killed the biker boss with an ID, and 3 more bikes, and lost 6 Gargoyles to the remainder. I think it was just 1 or 2 bikes left, and my gargoyles killed them in the time it took my flyrant to down the Deff Dread.
BS + LW to RoO is a 30 point upgrade. I think in most games I would rather spend 30 points on Regen for my tyrant, or more likely on something else for my army. If the rest of my army is doing its job they can hopefully handle all of the AV12 walkers, or at least make them charge me when I can use my Haywire WoD to soften them up.

1750 points, no LOW, no detachments, without tailoring and still keeping a list that is fairly TAC?
What are your restrictions in your area. Standard east coast/ west coast 2 source this can be a favorable matchup. However like anything it depends on the missions and the player. Remember you still have to kill the serpent and everything inside. It also depends what the rest of your list is.
The worst thing you can do is get cocky in a favorable match up and punt the game because your opponent knew your plan as well.

@jy2
If you are around Thursday and it fits into our schedules, I wouldn't mind getting practice vs penta flyrant. With my eldar. Played 4 flyrant before, but not 5. Could be good practice for both of us as my list has wknights serpents and bikes.
I'm also not a fan of lance tyrant, you seriously lack scoring, and all the major gt players have a strong answer for ad lance built into their list. A bunch of us forced each other to play lance vs our gt lists and we did quite well against it (obviously testing is not real life) but when you start to see all the counters lance has at the top tables it makes you not want t run it IMO.

Dunno if I'll be able to play Thursday. Won't get in until probably midnight or so.
Yeah, Adlance knight have a lot of weaknesses, which is why it will be a long shot for me to run them. Most likely it'll be either the Pentyrant or my NecroNids.

Ours changes in the UK on an event to event basis. But for Battlefield which these are lists that we are setting up for, the restrictions for Nids are effectively 1 CAD/Leviathan and a Formation.
So that's why I'm thinking Leviablight is my best bet, in the tournament and if I happened to come up against the above list, it would also be my best bet there, without tailoring, which would be a crazy thing to do.

I suggest a Bugstar, one Dakkafex, Veno, Zoey, and a Hormagaunt screen.

How bout having a gamble and throwing a Tervigon at them? give it some templates. Miasma cannon and thorax and other toys (like regen?) and see if it spawns enough gants to keep the lychguard busy while Tervigon templates them to bits?
This is just my thoughts with no knowledge of Lychguard btw... have never faced them.
And good luck to all Tyranid players in the LVO... go bugs

Only problem is, if they're in combat with Termagants, you can't use your templates. Not sure if you'd spawn enough before you crap out to whittle them down enough for your Tervigon to take on solo either.
You have very little to choose from. Due to MC heavy nature of our dex, other than our troops the list of single non character unit's that can even go above 200 points is very small, 250+ even smaller. Taking anything less than 200 points is obviously going to be a pretty subpar option. Keep in mind you won't have Synapse either.
This kept in mind, I'd say your best options are, 2x Dakkafex or 10x Shrikes
Assuming the Dakkafex don't IB, one round of shooting should absolutely decimate the Lych Guard likely killing nearly half the squad. Deploy up front, sit at the very edge of your shooting range, and move back. Chances are he won't be able to charge either so this is just dependant on the IB rolls, but the odds are in your favor, as worst case Scenario you get at least one turn of shooting + overwatch, but very likely 2 turns of shooting. But bad luck on the IB rolls and it could easily be turned around on you though
10x Shrikes can control range, make sure you abuse this as much as possible and take as many turns of shooting as you can squeeze out of the board, or just guarantee the charge. Remember Rending does nothing for you here, and he HAS to come to you.
Broodlord is a character, so he can't take him. The most damage you will get out of stealers for 300 pts is 18+AG, so ASSUMING you get the charge and ASSUMING it isn't into cover, is half the Lyhchguard dead before you even lose a stealer - you win. However, if you don't end up getting charge bonus, you are kind of screwed :/ You will likely only kill 1 before the other 9 start striking, but assuming you get lucky and kill 2, the other 8 turn around and kill over half your squad, in which situation you are left with 8 Stealers locked into combat with 8 Lychguard - not a situation you want to be in. This one can win, but it will lose more often than not.

Not a lot my firepower can easily take down. She has the Obsec, I have the skies. This would be an unfortunate matchup for me, with my Mawlocs having very little damage output and the Knight Lancer have the ability to punk my MC's.
Your wife's list looks nasty. But with that said, your army will potentially give hers some trouble. It all depends on how rusty she is (or isn't) with with her Eldar.
Mawlocs will have targets as long as your flyrants open up those transports for them.
