Had a try of GOW with the girlfriend the other day and we enjoyed it so far. Rules took a while to understand and we kept realising we were getting stuff wrong but it was still enjoyable. It was nice to have a game that was played co-operatively against an AI rather than each other too. The miniatures in it look great and I will be trying to paint them at some point.
Anyone else tried it.

Yes indeed, probably my favourite mini board game of recent years.
We've only played it 6 or 7 seven times --- and have only won/survived in about half of those -- but we've enjoyed it it each and every time.
Much the same boat as you rules wise.
I have a "plan" -- idle day dream really more than anything if one is honest -- about stealing the mechanics/rules for a modern take of Advanced ( or basic I guess) Space Crusade.
Got one of the expansions -- or the only one if there is only one -- but haven't used it yet.

We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

We played half of a game of emergance before I had to go to sleep. Seems like something I could really get into though.

Seems to capture the spirit of the video game in my -- limited -- experience.
Really got to act as a team or you die so easily !

has the FAQ which might help clear up one or two things.
Wish you could get the figures separately, I was quite impressed by them really.

My fiance and I both enjoy it. It can get intense when you suddenly spawn 2 C monsters and then 2 B monsters on successive turns and one character is already low on cards!
The minis are also on my "Paint someday" list.
Other co-operatiive games we like: Pandemic (only about a 40% success rate), Arkham Horror (takes 4 hours, though), Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

I'm surprised that it's actually a good game. I've seen it advertised and lumped it in the "horrible idea to make some cash off a tie in" section pretty much subconsciously. Might have to buy it for the collection...
If you like cooperative games there's a great one called "Space Cadets" that I enjoy immensely. It's nice because the turns are timed (so you don't get one person telling everybody else what to do) and the individual tasks are all really simple and easy to figure out.
Of course it's designed for 3 or more players so that could be a problem.

Gears seems to do a great job of distilling the spirt of the console game into a board game.
I don't have much board game experience but I am enjoying it.
I agree about the tension in the game. You feel you are doing really well then suddenly they spawn some drones and boomers.
The card mechanic is intresting too. The cards which allow you to have options, move ect are also your health. You can also use cards to react things. As your health goes down so does your options.

Gears had an expansion? Unless you mean the POD card set, tell me more, please!

Enjoyed this a bunch,..... While intuitively nonsensical,... The cards as health is a very interesting and challenging mechanic.

Indeed.
No new figures just some more/new weapons etc.

I recalling having a problem with one of the missions in the expansion pack. Mainly confusion over when/where to place the entrance to the next "section" or "level". Anyhow, the weapons were cool.
I like the first mission and the third. The Bull in the China shop mission isn't my favorite.
