1500 point overrun mission (Tyranids vs Guard) - A batrep told in 30 annotated images

So I got the opportunity to play against a beautifully painted Tyranid army with my Traitor Guard super competitive (is it? -ed). We decided that this was too good an opportunity to pass up so set about creating a scenario, based off the Black Legion defence mission:

1. The Traitor Guard forces were deployed in the center of the map
2. The Tyranid forces were deployed 12" away (minimum)
3. Any Tyranid unit wiped out would go into reserve and arrive immediately on the next turn (but be unable to charge - obviously)
4. If any guard remained alive at the end of the game they would win, otherwise the Tyranids would claim victory

The army lists were 1500 points and mine was Imperial Guard with Inquisitor Allies (all modelled as heretics of course!):

Guard Units including gear and explanation of the extensive conversions (no pictures):
Spoiler:

Coteaz (See the big red dude in the picture below)
5 Jokaero (Modelled as cultists who have contracted the Obliterator virus and thus fused with thier heavy weapons, becoming a weaker version of classic Chaos Obliterators)
5 Acolytes with Bolters (Modelled as witchelves with Bolters in black and red)
Dedicated transport Chimera (Modelled as rusted out ork truck )

50 man Imperial Guard platoon with power axes and melta bombs
Inquisitor with Master Level 1, Force Sword, Rad Grenades, Servo Skulls (3) and Power Armour (Emperor Quaid, the dude with the nurgling in his tummy).
Lord Commisar with Power Fist and Camo Cloak (Lady Carstien, modelled with a power sword :( )

Platoon command squad with 3 flamers
Vendetta
Manticore

1 Squad of veterans in plasmaguns
Dedicated Transport Chimera (Modelled as Shrine of Chaos - with a bubble bath in it!)

1 Squad of Acolytes with 3 plasmaguns and 5 bolters (again witchelves and Racks with bolters/plasmaguns)
Dedicated Transport Chimera (Modelled as a Coven Throne / Doom Bell conversion).

Analysis
Spoiler:

In the end it came down to a 33% chance to win (would it end on turn 5?!) alas it wasn't to be. I think we both wanted the ending to be that lone guardsmen, especially after the rest of her squad was killed by the Tyranid Warriors.

Loosing Coteaz was a bit of a blow, I swapped out precognition (reroll psyker saves/to-hit/to-wound) for prescience and then randommed Perfect Timing, this might have been a mistake. The ability to reroll that 2+ might have meant he could tank a bit more, but it would have been great to get the 4++ power for the guard squad!

The 10 side and rear armour of all my vehicles (except vendetta) hurt quite badly with the board layout making it difficult to force front armour shots.

The Tyranid warriors died 3 times in the game! all three times to instant death (lascannons / power fist + rad grenades), they really needed a buff this codex, it's a shame to see they didn't get it. Same deal with the Raveners.

Best unit on the Tyranid side was definetly the Tyranofex, that thing just cut through the weak Guard armour as fast as a Heldrake would and with 2+ / T6 and comming on from reserve even if killed it would have been a waste of time trying to kill it.

Undoubtedly the best bit of the game was taking out the Trygon for the second time with the Force Sword, a fitting end for such a great unit. I will remember thier slow heroic demise for a long time.

I really liked this way of presenting your report, good job. I'm enjoying trying out new missions and thought this Black Legion last stand style mission was more even than I would expect. Do you think it was fair?

Hard to say, I definitely felt that it was an uphill struggle with everything just coming straight back from the dead (often within firing range of my units), it also meant there were things that it just weren't worth shooting at (Tyranofex / Hive Tyrant). A larger board would have been better since I could have spaced out a bit more (the Black Legion mission allows for a 12" sphere of deployment from the center but I was limited to around ~8" because otherwise there would be nowhere outside of 12" for the Tyranids to deploy! It did turn into a pretty close game though and it was incredibly cinematic seeing the board flooded and the defenders dwindling.

My list was pretty cheesy compared to the Tyranids so that helped but I was also hindered by the chimera chassis with it's AV10 when not facing opponents. Overall I would say the mission is fair but probably only if it goes to turn 5/6, I can't imagine anyone surviving 7 turns against a full army. It also favours ranged attackers rather than melee since the reserve units are still fighting at full capacity if they are shooty but if they are fighty then they have to wait a round to get into it.

Very hard scenario for the poor defender. I think 12ps between attacker and defender for the deployment is too small.

Thanks for this excellent report !

Thanks for the positive comments, for those who are asking for more (and I certainly plan doing more), I did a couple of 3 way game reports in this format last year although they are less polished, especially the first one I did (bottom) which features quite a lot of unpainted models on opponents team.
