I honestly remain not convinced. - I mean I, for example, know Evangelion more as the, "that anime that is a crazy fever dream of a crazy person." It wouldn't honestly surprise me that if most people who don't really cross into the anime world thought much the same.

Evangelion isn't a masterpiece either, and is on par with TMNT. I suppose that might have been the joke though.

I sincerely hope you're trolling.

At the very most, it's overhyped.

Something doesn't become one of the most beloved, respected, celebrated and analysed works of all time in its home country (and outside) without being pretty fething good. We're not just talking "popular" here either- it's one of the most influential and critically acclaimed works ever made in Japan.

I will agree it's something of a Marmite series (either you love it or hate it) but denying its sheer magnitude as a work of art is just daft. But then Dakka does seem to have outrageously awful taste, so I don't know why I'm surprised. This is the same forum where "Failco$t lololololol" is considered the height of cutting wit.

I think I'll be going before things escalate...

Evangelion is a fanastic series, on par with Ghost in a Shell. But not on par with Spirited Away. Which undoubtedly is the best piece of animation of all time. It is basically the Brazil (the movie) of the animation world.

I personally Don't like it. Yet I like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Code Geass.

The best part is that you're not Supposed to like Eva. The entire thing is a giant troll by it's creator intended to mock the audience and make them feel bad and the fact it turned out popular pissed him off to no end.

The Evangelion/TMNT comparison is an eminently fair one.

Both began as weird, experimental adventures in storytelling. Both raised a central question of what makes a man a man (amongst many other things) and both eventually lost sight of the original goal in favor of newer, flashier toys and bigger explosions. They also both are currently in the hands of directors who dislike or hate the fans of their material.

I was very excited for Shredder after his initial shot, and utterly repulsed after he had the knives return to his hand in the trailer. What.

It looks like he'll be Knifeneto, Knifemaster of Knives now.

Orkeosaurus, on homophobia, the nature of homosexuality, and the greatness of George Takei.
English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them for loose grammar.
