Hey Skydragon!

Take a look at the Focus Fire rule concerning cover saves and shooting. When playing vs tanky HQ's, it can be used to put wounds on weaker models in a unit if the terrain/model placement permits. For example, if the Baron was behind a tree but some of his unit was in the open, you could choose to Focus Fire the models not in cover to bypass his higher save. I hope this helps!

Hehe we both feel the pain^^ Its also horrible when your entire opponents army has it. Tyranids seem to get it easily on entire units.. I might go try out Vassal.

Remember instant death ignores feel no pain. So if they are on a guy with 4 toughness and have it, shooting him with strength 8 or higher weaponry bypasses the rule and the guy is typically very dead.

Doesn't help with riptides, however.

Yes thanks for that. Really good point, been caught out by that before. FnP players will always seem to use it no matter hit by lascannon or lasgun, regardless of toughness.

I can't believe people will be willing to cheat and play completely WAAC against a complete new player, measuring distance to make sure you can't hit him and taking more than one save? Was no one else watching that would give you a hand?

Ahhh... no, no one else was in the channel at the time. I've run into a bit of a problem now, though. I've been playing against a guy on Vassal who is nice enough, but he plays as Tau. Our battles have been getting progressively more frustrating for me.

He likes to run riptides and tons of fire warriors. In our first game, he had a riptide with a 2+ armor save and feel no pain, and a huge horde of fire warriors. I managed to get a tie out of the game at least.

In our second game, he said he wanted more firepower and brought a commander with a 2+ save, with feel no pain, 3 other combat suits with melta guns, and 9 spotter drones in one big unit. It was even worse than the riptide! He also had the defensive wall from the fortifications section, with a twin-linked autocannon, and about 60-70 fire warriors backed up by 2 missile tanks. Despite everything, I actually managed to win this one by forcing half of his units to 'Go To Ground' behind that wall, while I seized the center objective with a small unit of tactical marines.

And now, in the current game we've started.. (It's saved, because we both needed to do other things) he's gone even further and brought 2 riptides, 2 missile tanks, the commander guy with the drones.. and a smaller horde of fire warriors.

I have to be honest.. I'm pretty tired of playing versus this stuff. :( It's just not a lot of fun to try to push out across the map versus entrenched fire warriors with strength 5 guns, and tons of missiles that ignore my armor and ignore my cover, and riptides flying all over the place. I don't mind doing it now and then, but this has been the same thing every game so far.. try to weather massed fire warriors while the elites and tanks pick off my heavy weapons with no chance of an armor or cover save.

He says he's trying to practice for a tournament.. but I'm obviously not a tournament player, I don't even know what the heck I'm doing yet. I'm just a little weary of this stuff. Maybe I can find someone else to play tomorrow when I get home from work. Hehe, sorry if it seems like I'm whining. I'm just a little frustrated. I realize Blood Angels are a close range army, but geeze.. charging a gunline is getting old!

Hey SkyDragon, if you want a different opponent on Vassal I can give you a game some time, we can arrange stuff by PM if you're interested.

I am UK so will have to be a weekend probably or we won't be able to align times, but would be happy to play.

Full disclosure, I am a tournament player, and a reasonably good one. I won't however bring tourney lists against a new player and I have introduced a lot of people to the game, so would be happy to play more in that style. Help you get to grips with the rules etc.

Welcome to 6th Edition Warhammer 40,000. Unfortunately, the game is pretty much inherently broken right now because people do not play it to be a dramatic scenematic gaming experience set in the Warhammer 40k universe anymore. It's "just a game" and one that was never really balanced to begin with. Since the inception of the internet, competitive players swelled in numbers to the point it dwarfed out the spirit of the game at most FLGS.

And it's a crying shame. I have a fluffy Dark Angels list that combines all 3 "wings" and so it just loses against someone who wants to bring a list that'll table me. However, a good friend of mine who's been playing since he was 16 humors me and makes fluffy Ork lists and Chaos Marines lists, and we kind of build a story around our battles. It's quite fun, and considering we go back and forth most games, seems to me that was the intention of the game.

Well, the good news is that I got to play my first real game at an actual table yesterday. It was a lot of fun and it was versus the Space Marines: Imperial Fist. It felt quite a bit different moving the models around by hand, and trying to keep track of dice.

While I was at the store I looked at the army book for the Tau and was surprised to see how many units they have, because so far my Tau opponent on Vassal has only made use of maybe 4-5 units. There's a lot more options in that book. It's a little confusing as to why he doesn't make more diverse use of them.
