Hello all,

I’m coming to 40k after years of interest. Having just freed up a large chunk of time by finishing grad school, I’m ready to pick up the hobby in earnest. I’ve played a few small games in 5th edition, and a couple 1000 pt games in 6th, all as CSM. From time to time, I’ve searched through this forum and others trying to learn some of the basics of the hobby, and I took a few intro to miniature painting classes at Gen Con to get a feel for that aspect. My army at this point contains a small second-hand force of CSM troops, and a Dark Vengeance set that I’m in the process of assembling. The latter has potentially shown me my first nemesis - mould lines; they kill me.

My first question is a forum-use question. I have some getting-started questions that I couldn’t find answered when searching; is it better to post that here, or to post it to the other forums?

Thanks,
Neep

Hi and welcome!

I would recommend the other forums for questions, few will notice them here. Just remember to be polite and give time to make both a describing topic and make your questions understandable. Try to give some background thoughts when you ask something and you will probably get better answers.

Or just could try to ask me right here, I'll do my best to help

I remove most of my mold lines on the small plastic minis using a hobby knife. On the finecast and resin figures/vehicles it can require more elaborate measures and I use a combination of files, hobby knives and sand paper (oh and green stuff).

Just be careful how much material you remove when you are using the hobby knife on the minis. I know I have a tendency to get carried away.

Always love to see another Chaos player...

Thanks to you both for the input. My first question was somewhat involved, so I put it in a separate thread here.

For mold lines, I've tried both fine toothed jewelers files and an exacto knife. The former is fairly accurate, but slow. It seems to work better for the Dark Vengeance pieces, which have some hard-to-reach spots. The latter is faster, but definitely wants to eat up plastic.

As for Chaos, I do love playing the bad guys. All the might of a Space Marine, with the gifts of Chaos, and none of the rules, plus access to Daemons. What's not to like?
