I found these on ebay for sale by droste1971
are these recasts. I don't think GW ever sold these bits separately.

Can you link the actual bid? My guess is yes just because the quality looks weird, but I'd need to look a bit more.

No major quality problem for me except the holes at the bottom of the backpacks.
The quantity of champion backpacks however...

Are those early 3rd edition? My memory fails me.. remember at one time the bits service covered pretty much the entire range, and you could buy quantities of whatever you wanted.

Also, don't think you tend to see metal as such a common material for re-casts these days do you? That makes me think less likely a re-cast, although certainly not impossible.

Yeah I was thinking that as well, recasts are almost always resin. The sprue bits also look like the authentic sprues used with the white metal minis.

They look authentic, I recall something like that for Death Guard in 3rd edition that looked similar, but it's been a long time.

Indeed, if you were going to recast in metal why would you leave the sprue/vent parts on them?

If you're cheap enough to recast you wouldn't leave the excess metal in I would imagine.

These are definitely recasts. Believe it or not, but there are plenty of them floating about e-Bay. There are folks selling metal recasts of oldschool chaos warriors and demons at affordable prices all the time.

Thing to look for:

- multiple auctions of sought-after models,
- auctions with identical photographs (look up the person's feedback page and check out some of his past auctions),
- miniatures always photographed against the same background, usually featureless,
- imperfections in casts (not foolproof, but telling),
- low to moderate prices on hot models.

I think a long time ago GW did a set of metal death guard shoulder pad, head and backpack bits. I'm going to guess there was something like 4 standard trooper and 1 champion's worth of bits in each pack, looks like the seller ended up with a lot more champion bits as a result, so is flogging them in a joblot on ebay.

You see a similar thing with the Ork Tankbusta models, because you get 3 tankbusta, 1 tankhammer, and 1 nob in each box, ebay is inundated with everyones spare nobz and tankhammers

I just don't remember them doing any individual heads. Thats all.

The back pack i recognize. But look a little like they have been reacast. But i do not remember the separate heads.

The shoulder pads, heads and bolters were Death Watch bits I believe.

Those are from the Index Astartes-era Death Guard box.

The passthroughs are a fairly common fault with metal backpacks like that due to the placement of the socket for attachment.

I don't think there was much overlap, but if those bitz had been released at the same time the Battlewagon was still around, they could have been purchased in bulk, BY WEIGHT.

Bigger question is.. why in the world would you recast them as metal? I have no problem with recasters, but that's pretty junior varsity to not do it in resin.

Probably someone bought a squad's worth back when GW did bitz orders, and only just now finally gave up on his conversion idea. You see these kind of auctions all the time.

I've certainly got a lot of stuff like that. It could easily be either.
