I don't go shopping online much, but I've seen this kind of website design around a few sites, and a number of them were smaller than Amazon.

It's the internet. One person comes up with a good idea for them, and then everyone else gets on the bus even if they don't need to.

Well, it's an idea that works for the one company that's big and successful, therefore if they copy the idea they'll become big and successful themselves.

Oh no.

A few years ago, games-workshop.com was nice. Everything was accessible (for disabled people), nicely formatted, and done in html (for easy linking). Then they rolled it over to the php monstrosity they had that was slow, awkward, took awhile to find your content, didn't necessarily load correctly on mobile devices, and no longer worked with links or Linx.

So then they decided, you know all of those things we did to make our website worse? Let's make them even WORSE!

Let's destroy browsing, while simultaneously making people who know what they want have to click on more stuff, and then pretend that the product doesn't represent a game with underlying rules. Let's streamline it so that the website directs people to buy the most expensive products and nothing more. Let's deploy mass pagification so that we can put more ads (for our own products) per amount of content that we provide.

I didn't used to go to their website often (at least after their last update), but I can't imagine what I'd go there for now. They have reduced their website to literally nothing more than a somewhat-confusing direct-sales experience. Nothing more.

If I wanted to buy something, I'm going to just ask my FLGS owner to get it for me, as he already knows the codes for stuff, and I'd be supporting a necessary local business. The current GW website has literally nothing that my FLGS can't provide, and with better customer service to boot.

Most times, I agree with you 100%. You re wrong here. I found it even easier. They even show for example, Crone and Harpy, not just the Crone. If you wanted a Harpy you were before given the Crone version. Now you can see all the versions out there. Not sure what you mean it's harder to find. I found everything easy enough. Also there is a tab at the top that shows, Most expensive first, or cheapest first and other options as well.

For someone who always finds the good in stuff, I am a bit shocked finding some much negativity from you in this post.

For me, there is something about the site I am not thrilled about. I just think it's change and have to adjust. but I am starting to see where it has become better.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Here's an example of how it's harder.

Two editions ago, if I started at the home page and wanted to get to the page for a commissar, I'd have to click...

Imperial Guard -> HQ -> Commissar

Now, I have to click

Warhammer 40,000 -> Astra Militarum -> HQ ->Next -> Next -> Commissar

I have to do twice as much stuff to get to the same content. That's bad design.

Then, to make things more obnoxious, let's say that I was looking at that Commissar, and then decided I wanted to look at Space Marine Legion of the Damned.

Before it was:

Space Marines -> Elites -> Legion of the Damned.

Now, it's:

Space Marines -> Elites -> uncheck troops -> uncheck astra militarum -> Next -> Legion of the Damned

And don't make the mistake of unchecking astra militarum first, because then the website boots you all the way back to the main 40k menu.

It's like they're trying to keep me from accessing their content.

I like it, yes it has some issues but I imagine they will be corrected in the near future. The new side navigation panel makes browsing more entertaining, now I click HQ and see them for all codex's and that's cool! I can't imagine the Faqs and Errata being gone for too long so I wouldn't worry . What people fail to realize though, "GW is a publicly traded company" and if you want your considerations to be taken seriously don't argue on Dakka, buy at least one share and participate in company decision making. That is how capitalism works so if the hobbyist want control of GW we have to own parts of the company. Anyways, I like the new STORE because that's all it is now, a STORE. I get my hobby info from Dakka anyways.

Edit: I'm sorry but if you can't manage to navigate the side panel in the year 2014 then life must be hard. I found Legion of the Damned soldiers in 3-clicks.

its cheaper to buy a set of 3 sisters compared to the 10 woman squad

also what annoys me on this site is when you click in a drop down, if you select an option it opens that page up, if you unselect it takes you right back out that section, you have to select a new option and then close the original.

I'm not fussed that its all about sales now, but the navigation around it is absolutely awfuk

Guys...

if you want to complain about design - in the news section is a thread for this.

I opened this here to check for pricing changes and really stupid pricing descisions (such as print cheaper than ibook).

So, does anyone see anything unlovable? Did someone's troops choices get an 200% price increase? I'm not sure, but I think the Big Mek with SAG was in the ~20€ Price range before. Now he's 33€ for the same ugly modell.

New Web Site Design by GW:

Just fine.

Now they are like everyone else and not all that snappy looking.

I can buy from it just fine and find everything I would "want".

I also have zero reason to hang out there.

Their loss for not creating a more "engaging experience" that is not just 100% "the sale".

Promoting the IP and the lore or aspects of the hobby and a feeling of community has been pretty much stripped out that made them unique.

Rather sad really.

At least the "win" is their web site is better aligned to their business plan so they are focused.

As a head's-up, there currently are no more FAQ's on the site... but apparently they will "be back in the very near future", aka, customer service's way of trying to appease the masses while diplomatically telling everyone "we have no fething clue what's going on - please don't hate us!"

I remember when the only way to get anything from GW was to buy it at a local store or order it from WD, CJ or another one of their print magazines. The internet was not even considered science-fiction yet.

Oh, and with the current listed prices, just about any model purchase gets you free shipping. Minimum order is $65 to get the free shipping, which is easily done with a 10-soldier box.

That's very poor from an interface point of view. Very few customers will come to a website to look at one specific product, and then leave. A good webstore indexes it's products smartly and seeks to reduce the number of clicks between the homepage and an end product. GW's new filter system is far more cumbersome than the old system, even if the new interface is much nicer.

No one just "browses" the GW site. They come looking for a specific product. This isn't a game you stumble across somewhere and then decide to dip your toes in. If you know what 40K is, you've probably already got a main book, a Codex (or five) and some models from your local store or fellow players.

People going to GW.com know what they're looking for. Either they've got their heart set on a specific model (such as the aforementioned Commissar or Battle Sisters), or they are in the market for a new army-range, all of which are easily found using the search bar, for what can be as little as two-click shopping (depending on how you word your search).

Only 5 codexes? I've got all the ones from 5th, the some of the ones from 2nd, 3rd, 4th as well, and all the ones from 6th (though the last ones have largely been for reviewing more than a desire to go out and spend $30-$50 on a new codex I don't really plan on playing).

Oh, and I have a copy of the Rogue Trader book too (thanks Amazon!).

The site is significantly easier to use on tablets/phones now, but then again who gives a gak? There's no reason to be browsing the site.

For feth's sake, they got rid of White Dwarf Daily. That was the ONE redeeming thing of their website experience the last year. I don't care that often times it was used simply as a promotions/sales platform, they occasionally had some pretty decent articles and lovely miniatures.
