As title says. Nerf gun plastic is fairly "resilient" to paint. I've previously hosed down the last gun my nephew gave me with some black primer I had, and it held.... mostly..... and he was blown away by it. See figure 1:
Figure 1:

Now my nephew gave me something new to deal with and I'm stuck wondering just what I can get away with for primer, because I'm trying to avoid coughing up money for spray paint... I've got an airbrush, so that's one checkmark. I bother checking here because I figure some of you conversion artists might have had to paint some type of plastic t that simply refused to accept any other color than what it already had, and I'm looking for input....

You want it to stick and stick well?

Rub down with some ultra fine sandpaper. WIPE the dust off it, and use an etching primer. Stuff won't come off without work.

No easy way to do it without spending the folding stuff. I don't think I've ever seen an airbrush primer with enough tooth to do it.

i was afraid of having to sand it down.... I'm not sure how to pull apart this new one. It's a pump majigger sniper type dealio, and by my assessment assembly involved glue and crews...

whatis 'folding stuff'? etching primer.... Thanks, will look into that.

Folding stuff means cash, folding moneys or here in the UK coloured beer vouchers, green gets you one pint, orange gets you 2-3 pints, purple/blue gets you five or six and red gets you about 10 pints

Bank, benjamins, big ones, bills, bones, bread, bucks and about forty other words for money.

Your welcome man. silly Americans have only one colour for their money and they're all the same size must make it very difficult for partialy sighted people.

hmm.... krylon. I will definately look into that, I know my university carries some of their products and I've used the matte varnish.

Yeah, I used to think all money was colorful. I remember the slovak bills and I completely forgot just how tiny those bills were compared against what I'm used to handling now. The new canadian plastic money is also wacky. it feels like a toy, it's hard to feel serious when handling it.

You canucks have switched to what us Aussies have been using for decades. : D

Krylon Fusion is a good paint for plastics.

My nerf guns come apart when I take the screws out.

I'm modding an ebf-25 (that's the machinegun) that I picked up at a thrift store (sans ammo box, ammo, tripod, etc - jUST the gun) - for my mando costume and it's the CLEAR plastic version.

So yeah, it takes a LOT of work to de-nerf them.

I used to paint up Nerf guns, you have to sand it first. Also, if your spray painting it, definitely take it apart first and take all of the working bits out. The spray likes to gum up the works and if you get it on a moving part it can throw off the operation.
