This would be a better thing if this was given out free to those who subscribed to X months of the weekly White Dwarf. I know not to expect free things but like anything else GW does they do it by their own consent and all I can do is vote with my wallet.

Why this product gets so much hate is far beyond what I can understand. If you have WD issues then this binder puts them in a single safe place instead of some place the'll just get destroyed if left. It's also looks cool. It's actually a really good product .

I'm actually surprised this thing got its own thread; I saw it up the other week but thought it wouldn't garner enough responses to merit me posting a thread (not an insult against you OP). A binder is a binder is a binder. It's not bad looking, though as a GW product it is unreasonably expensive. But this is just GW catering to people who clamor towards anything that has their logo on it. Somehow, someone will buy this, in large enough quantities that the execs will say "profit margins on the faux-leather binders are above expected levels. We recommend making codex protectors out of the same material and charging $30 per book." And again, someone will buy them. Or at least I imagine so. Until some point, when those someones diminish enough in number when the product hits a threshold Then GW may take the information into account for future faux leather releases. EDIT: WarOne wrote:This would be a better thing if this was given out free to those who subscribed to X months of the weekly White Dwarf. I know not to expect free things but like anything else GW does they do it by their own consent and all I can do is vote with my wallet. This would be a good idea. Certainly could be something like "Buy a year's subscription, get this one-of-a-kind binder!"

£10 for a binder is within the realms of what others charge, its normally £7 or so plus some postage.
The problem is its for the wrong book. White dwarf weekly is the cheap weekly advert, if you bought it every week AND wanted them all in binders, its £40 a year to store the magazines.
Meanwhile, the coffee table artbook that costs £7 a pop and only has 12 issues a year, that one doesnt get a binder.
£10 to protect a years worth of collectable books makes sense. This doesnt really.

The binder idea is not bad but they need content to fill them. I hope it is custom fit for other GW books.

The reason for the "hate" is because you're paying about a 300%+ markup over a similar product from an office store where the only difference is the White Dwarf logo.
Best Buy's website, for example, has a 3" chord binder listed for $3.89.

It would be like GW for them to do that rather than make it inclusive for all books.
It will not hold old books - you can see from the photos that the method they're using will only work with the staple-bound books.

Do office stores in Great Britain really charge that much for a chord binder? What's up with the markup? They're less than $5 in the USA (or between 2-3 pounds).

Oh. Wait. This is GW we're talking about, right? Outrageous! What a scam!
You're right, this is completely a non-news item and doesn't really need to get a special mention. Most magazines have a similar type of item on sale, Wargames Illustrated if we are focusing on this industry only.
But, as it's here it gives 'fans' a chance to vent, something denied to them by the lack of customer contact points in other areas (facebook, twitter, official forums etc. )

Yes, but other publishers don't sell finealogues.
They do. Most magazines have zero meaningful content, WD is not some freak of nature in that regard. In fact, since it happens to have rules from time to time, it's actually a step up from your average popular science or celebrity rag.
In terms of within the same industry though, you should try Wargames Soldiers & Strategy. There is a good solid 2-3 hours of reading in each issue, and a lot of background/historical information also.
And actually, Wargames Illustrated is a good read as well.

Meh. I can see your point but free subscription add-ons usually tend to be lower quality. I'll wait to see on for myself before I pass judgement on that. Still, I'm not the target audience for this. I've only bought one WD Weekly and that was so I could get the Knight rules without buying the codex. It'll be a long time before I have enough weeklies to fill a binder.

The reason I feel this way is one of value. Just because there's a White Dwarf logo on the front of thise one doesn't makey it five times the value of a comparable product you can get as a single item purchase from a local office supply store.
As for promo items gotten from magazine subscriptions, I've gotten some pretty decent stuff. I got some artifical fleece gloves from a running magazine subscription that had similar gloves retailing for $20.00 at the local running store. From Men's Health, I've gotten multiple books (like "Banish Your Belly" 10 years ago or the "Big Book of Exercise") as subscription rewards that have a posted retail value on the UPC of $30.00+, in some cases.
So, those experiences are why I think an item that really, honestly should retail in the sub-$10 range should have been given as a subscription promo.

Probably because it's not getting any 'hate'. What it's getting is people commenting that it's a mediocre offering, and/or overpriced.
'Hate' is far too readily used around here to describe any commentary that isn't overwhelmingly positive.
Personally, I think a binder for your mag collection is a good idea... But for a plain black binder with just a name stamped on it (no funky artwork, no way to track which issues are in it, nothing really to distinguish it from the sea of similar generic products) the price on this is nuts.

This, if it had say, a nice embroided pick of The White Dwarf on it, then it may just be worth it, but if I really wanted to bind the weeklys, I would just pull the staples out, cut the page in half (so its all A4) and spiral bind it myself.

There is a line between legitimate criticism of a mediocre product, which this is, and things like this:

I'm pretty sure most of what gets labelled GW hate here isn't actually hate anyways; a lot of it is actually just joking around. Not to say the hate doesn't exist, but it doesn't even make up half of those posts anyway.
And to stay on topic, it's already listed as temporarily out of stock now; at least in Aus.
