Just felt like starting a thread on this awesome game..
I was just finishing up some insurgents and US Army that I use to teach people how easy and simple the basics are.
The pictures are bad but I'll get them in some
Good light one of these day.

Yes I love the heck out of this game.. My US army are 20mm from elhiem. I forget who makes the insurgents (I'll look through my online receipts and find them) but they are 1/72 scale and unfortunately they are a softish plastic so I had to do a lot of heating them up to reposition some weapons. But it was $11usd for about 40-50 figures. Not the greatest, but very cost effective way to flesh out some bad guys.. I'll try to get some better pics up soon

Here are some much nicer pics. I didn't go for extreme details on these guys as they are smallish and the focus is much more on enjoying this game to me. I give my painting love to my Warmachine, 40k Characters, and other more display type models. I also wanted a been playing in the dirt not fresh out of the laundry room look.

Those insurgents are from Ceaser miniatures Modern Urban Resisters set. It's a generic set useful for Middle Easter/African irregulars.

Looks awesome.
A quick way to add texture, especially a stucco type look is by rubbing a little bit of spackling paste on the sides.

If you like this scale, then that plastic soldier review site is going to be invaluable to you. There's actually been a lot of modern stuff in 1/72 plastics that you may want to look into. The plastic can be annoying in terms of hot water straightening and the like, but I think your results speak for themselves.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Is that foam core and balsa wood for the trim? Looks like it's turning out great. For the stairs, might I suggest making a small set of stairs the width of a figure's base that you can put on the stairs upside down to make a level platform for when a miniature ends up part way up or down the stairs? I hope that makes sense. Here's a diagram:
Sorry about the terrible diagram

If you want a faster way to get the building texture consider a non-shrinking drywall compound. You apply a very light layer of it and then texture it by pressing with a green scouring pad and then let it dry and paint later. It's also good stuff to fill in the exposed foam edges.
One of these:
If it ends up being too textured for your liking, when it's partially dry you can smooth it out with the same scouring pads using a sanding motion.
As for the stair platform, you probably don't need to make it cover three stairs. Two should probably do as you'll then get three stair widths of a platform. I've adjusted the diagram.

Oh wow. I've never seen these before. Not bad at all.
Dj0311 and I always toy with modern skirmish stuff but for some reason can't ever get it started. I feel like (and this is likely a personal bias) that modern conflict is largely thought about in a "western" or "technologically superior" force vs. a "insurgent" or "soviet bloc weaponry" force context. Not saying that this couldn't be a lot of fun, but I feel like it kind of hinders the "modern" scene. Who wants to play as poorly equipped milita when you can take helo inserted SEALS or SAS backed by an Apache?
I have a sneaking suspicion that this is what slowed down FOW Vietnam. What are you all's thoughts on this?
Seeing some other nation's stuff, i.e. China and the like, there is some awesome potential for wargaming here. Does force on force have nation specific rules?
EDIT: Holy S**t! that Orion range has models getting straight beheaded!

Not so much on the nation specific rules. Actually apart from vehicles nothing has a stat line nor are there iany weapon stats to speak of. The idea behind the game is that (especially where small arms are concerned) it's not the weapon it's the person using it. So you have a dice value called a troop quality. Your civilians/insurgents don't all operate on the same skill so they tend to be troop quality d6. Your trained regulars have a troop quality of d8 usually, veterans d10 and elite spec ops seal team 6 types have d12. A 'fire team' of irregulars with a saw type mg, and say an rpg will roll 1d6 for each member of the team and add two bonus d6 for the rpk and RPG. So 6 insurgents with the rpk and RPG roll 8d6 when attacking. Similarly a US army fire team (4 soldiers) with saw and m203 would roll 6d8 when attacking. The combat system is opposed dice rolls where 4+ equals successful hit and wound. The defender rolls a number of dice based on number of models and various other modifiers (cover, concealment) so for instance the American fire team would roll 5d8 basic (1 d8 for each plus an additional d8 because the squad has body armor) and successfully defends on 4+ rolls . Ex:
Insurgents roll their attack and get a 6,5,4,4,3,3,3,1
Americans roll their defense and get. 8,7,6,3,3
Insurgents have 4 successes (6,5,4,4)
Americans have 3 (8,7,6)
The defender/Americans then allocate their defense dice against the attackers. So in that example only 1 casualty is caused on the Americans.
You then go on to check moral, seriousness of the wound, etc.
There really are no army lists and I feel this can be a huge drawback sometimes. But then again it's scenario and tactics driven. There are all sorts of cool things you can do, in the form off interrupts and the dog of war cards that can occur when you fail to interrupt an opponent. Anyways rambling on. Some friends and I have come up with a make shift army list and so far it hasn't created anything too unbalanced. Maybe I'll share it in a future post. Automatically Appended Next Post: AAG does a supplement for FOF called Cold War gone hot.. That would be a great one
To fight out NATO vs Soviets Automatically Appended Next Post: Of course road to Baghdad would mostly pit regulars vs regulars as well

Ask the Chechens how that whole "technologically superior" force thing works out.
Admittedly, it's fun to play with all the extra toys. But this is going to be a problem no matter which game you're talking about. And keep in mind that "soviet bloc weaponry" still allows a lot of fun. A Spetznaz team being inserted via Hind is just as interesting as the SAS backed up by an Apache.

Which is why I mentioned the Spetznaz with the Hind.
Warsaw Pact troops, and post-Soviet Eastern Europe (including Russia) should have plenty of shiny toys in the event of a "Cold War Gone Hot" hypothetical. It's only when you get to the Middle East, Africa, and/or irregular forces that you start finding the lack of shininess.

that whole warsaw pac vs nato thing is starting to sound great.. may have to do a east vs west campaign based around current events in the ukraine. might be fun to ponder a world war with that as a spark to it. Would china get involved? How would India react to chinas entrance? would Iran use the ordeal as an opportunity to expand their influence in the middle east? so on and so forth.. of course My group is composed of a lot of zombie fanatics. who says we have to keep in realistic when we can throw zombies in the mix with the ambush Z supplement!!! =D Automatically Appended Next Post:
