As a Guard player, I'm sort of excited about the rumored change that everything (except zooming flyers) can score. In the new missions, it seems that you and your opponent will also be able to score points for taking objectives (not just holding them at the end of the game), making speed much more critical to the game.
I think this will open up previously unused portions of the army list:
- Deep striking units (mostly elites/fast attack) will now actually be able to secure objectives. For the Guard, this means that scions will function more like spec ops (like in the fluff), and not just anti-marine/infantry.
- Fast units and aggressive movement will provide an actual advantage. I rarely have a reason to move my chimeras, that would just reduce their shooting effectiveness. Hellhounds and rough riders will be more worthwhile for quickly seizing objectives.
- Slow and tough units will have an incentive to take-and-hold objectives, rather than just sit back and fire from afar. This will make my beloved demolisher a practical (and not just awesome-looking) choice, moving up to seize the objective before that Tyranid swarm closes in.
In general, I think this could give the game much more of a take-and-hold feel, with units racing to get the objective, rather than sitting back in gun lines and just clearing the enemy off the board before lazily securing the nearest objective on turn 5. I think these changes will make blitzkriegs and aggressive play much more viable, and punish turtling/gun-lines. Of course Eldar will still be obscenely OP, but now Tau and IG will have a reason to actually move some units.

I am also a guard player! I have been playing a tank themed list here lately. The fact that every unit can score an objective makes my list awesome! I was running with 3 troops before, I may now only run with two in order to stay within FOC. This is very exciting!
I also run GK, and we all know how much they struggle to keep scoring units on the board! At least now all of the units will be scoring! Go Go Dreadknights!

Glorious return of IG "I basically skip movement" armies. Sigh. I'd use my scoring 3++ GA.

I actually think it will be quite the opposite. Before, the IG could just sit on top of 1 or 2 objectives picked at the start of the game, then park and hold. Now desirable objectives will change during the game. Furthermore, to get to the objectives, the IG will have to move up and within range of the enemy. If they try to sit on multiple objectives, it makes them vulnerable to crafty enemies that take a divide an conquer approach, especially if they use the hulking frames of IG tanks to block LOS from the rest of the IG army.
Movement sounds like it will be more important than ever. I suspect that IG armies will still lack movement like they always do, and the strategy will focus on securing and keeping safe a "zone" of the battlefield, like the middle or a side. From there, they will have to venture forth with deep-striking storm troopers or rough rider cavalry to get to those needed objectives quickly while the bulk of the army provides cover fire.
Or maybe they'll do something else. The might advance forward in a huge "wave" that creates a safe zone for their weaker units behind it. Of course this strategy can fail if the front of that wave gets stopped, or worse, enemy forces breach it, or worse still, deep striking enemies get behind the heavily fortified front and start killing off relatively weak troops in the rear guard.

My strategy basically resolves around the sentence 'victory or martyrdom', which I base all my tactics on. For instance, I consider not charging MCs with standard sister squads to be morally incorrect.
...so my strategy of running forward with shooting troops that used to be behind an aegis line isn't going to change

This is the number one change in the new rules that I think will radically alter how 40k is played.
I (ALSO!) play IG. If objectives are taken rather than held, I can't imagine not spamming Tempestus and Mechvets; it might bring my Vendettas back despite the ratcheted point cost. Otherwise, Russ spam seems pretty spectacular.
I've considered a Marine army of some flavor focused on assault, too. We already have a White Scars player, so probably Assault Marines and Vanguard Vets. Deathwing has also tempted me. It seems putting down units that are almost impossible to remove and pack a huge punch is the way to go.
In any case, my troops may well get packed up this edition. They were never resilient enough for contesting to matter, as they'd get wiped off an objective anyhow. Full mechanized or mobile infantry for my IG.

Finally my fast attack can try clear and hold objectives along with my elite. Gives the rest of my force a sense of purpose besides. Although as a guard player my troops will still do most of the work.

Well, the rumor is that Troops will get "objective secured" special rules, so they will still be very valuable. Maybe more so, as just bringing them close can "trump" a non Troop unit. (rather than contesting, objective secured gives it to the unit that has it. Only other objective secured units can contest)

Hmm... I could finally realize my dream of a Sisters of Battle army without a single bolt gun it it (unless I like ignoring cover more than once per game per unit). I kind of wonder how 40 melta guns and 10 multi-meltas would fare against 4 knights. The new vehicle damage table means I will need more shots to down a knight, but it also makes it that much less likely that they will stop more than 1-2 of the immolators of getting into range.

For people being terrified of units boosting to objectives and getting a Victory Point, remember that happens once and then that card is gone.
You don't just camp an objective anymore as you may not have any cards that give you points for doing that.
It makes the game move towards moving more and not having static gunlines that last turn grab objectives.

Supr early to make any predictions, as far as my playstyle goes. However I am reading whats being said here and am thinking to myself "holy cowz, I am ahead of the curve". Lol.
I have been the biggest advocate of movement as a weapon since 5E dropped and have continued that as 6th rolled along.
So if movement will be favored, I think that is a good thing and something that fits me like a glove.
But what I'm REALLY excited about is how different lists might look. I am definitely not saying that lists were uniform, not like Warhammer Fantasy is. But the meta shift will be significant enough that I will get to see lots of different and new things to fight and that bodes well for entertainment value.

The only real change will be is a gun line won't be able to target a small number of troops in another gun line to deny an objective.
Troops are still super scoring, except now non troops can't even contest an objective troops are holding. It's easier to hold an uncontested objective in your own deployment zone, but it will be more difficult to take an objective away from troops.

my marine army tends to lean strongly towards deep strike (tac squads in drop pods, terminators), and fast attack (assault marines, vanguard vets, and land speeders), with fairly static fire support (predator, devastators, dreadnoughts, and sniper scouts). i think opening up what counts as scoring units will increase their effectiveness dramatically. of course, it depends on how the reserves rules change, as well, as i commonly deploy very little of my army at the start of the game. and since i used shrike a lot in 5th edition, everybody was fleet, too. i was also fond of the old index astartes raven guard rules, but that only worked in casual games.

Shouldn't that make us more terrified of the unit that can boost over to the correct objective for each turn rather than just being stuck camping one?

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

Well, I think not in the first place. I guess that Necrons can be played as before.
Eldar was too powerful for me in the 6th ed so that I shelved it. Let's see if it will get a bit more challenging.

All units in an unbound list still score, but no unbound units can ever contest an objective that a battle forged list holds.
