Subject: Will 'Objective secured' and the change in 'Smash' hail the return of the tervigon?

Got my new rule book, and have finished reading it. At first I thought, screw the FoC. Nids don't care about scoring. But then I got thinking....
The tervigon wasn't really heavily utilised in 6th, But I think that might change. In a battle forged army, Troops gain 'Objective secured'. Now, if you simply take 30 guants at 120 points, you can take a tervigon as a troops choice....This means you now have a T6 6 wound troops choice that has objective secured. So the only way to stop you holding that objective is to kill it....similarly, it also spawns free termagaunts......The nid codex states that these new gaunts will be treated as if they were an entry from the troops section of the codex for all purposes including mission special rules and such. So these free spawned gaunts also gain objective secured......Suddenly its very important that the tervigon dies. But here's the thing... A list could contain flyrants, carnys, zoeys, crones and all sorts of other threats, so if they concentrate on the tervigon the rest of the nid tide can advance.
Lastly, he is one of few models who can take crushing claws. Since the nerf to smash, this is now quite important. +1 strength and armourbane could be invaluable against walkers and tanks.
So what do people think? Is one now an auto include? Does an army need more than 1 to make it work? I'm writing a 1500 point list and including one as a troops choice, will this be effective enough??

He is no more of an auto-include in this edition as he was in last edition. Back in the previous editions, people weren't contesting the tervigon. Rather, they were killing it anyways.
However, the main problem with him is the lack of mobility. What good is contesting if you can't reach the far objectives. Instead, you will most likely see Skyblight gargoyles or even deepstriking ripper swarms instead.

Aren't swarms never scoring? Believe that was part of the rules for swarms in 6th.

They did. They're actually an incredibly useful unit if you're trying to stay within battleforged limits....

I agree, till I see different, I'm believing "One is good, more than one is bad". (for now anyway.. ) I don't know I'd Want Claws on a Tervigon, I always add in a Thorax Hive though. (at about 90% Electro-bugs)

Heh, when I was making up my Tervigon I almost just glued on the talons and was going to chuck the crushing claws into the bits box... Something made me magnetise the claws and talons instead. Means if I have got a few points lying around I could easily put claws on the big mumma bug and see how it goes. I don't play competitive so don't see my Tervigon get smashed off the table that often.

It does mean anything above double 4's on each hit are tearing open land raiders....

Well if Big Momma Bug is attacking a Landraider, things are alreadty pretty bad... Me, I plan to just roll real lucky on Powers of the Hive Mind! and getting Warp Lance/Blast (or do I still have to re-roll?) (It should be my choice, seeing as I can chuck as many dice into a try as I please) (well up to 6D6 anyway )

I don't think spawned termagants have Objective Secured.
The Objective Secured rule says that troops from this detachment have it. The spawned gaunts are troops, but I don't believe they are part of a detachment (also applies to spawned demon units).

Termagants are different depending on whether they are taken in an Unbound list or in your Combined Arms detatchment. Thus, they are not apriori the same as any other Termagant you have.

Go read the codex. Spawned termagants are "identical in every way to a Termagant unit chosen from the Troops section of the army list......."

Do spawned Termagants in an Unbound list have Objective Secured?
Do spawned Termagants from a Troop Tervigon Combined Arms detachment have Objective Secured?
Do spawned Termagants from a HQ Tervigon in a Combined Arms detachment have Objective Secured?
This is not to say I don't agree with you, I just think it's slightly ambiguous whether a Termagant unit that was spawned has Objc. Secured, as it was not taken as a 'troop in an combined arms detatchment' based on the wording in the BRB. Unfortunately, they didn't touch on it in the FAQ.

Do Termagants chosen from the Troops section have OS in any of your scenarios? That is your answer.

That is not the same as being a troop selection from the combined arms FOC chart. Its the same sort of issue summoned units have. Or troops in a formation.
Is it unclear enough to be arguable? I'd agree with that. But air tight RAW they get objective secured? Not in my opinion.
That said either way I think tervigons are no longer the must take that they were. jy2 touched on it but to me there's more reasons to take other troop options. Like broodlord led stealers or rippers.

Wouldn't you use a Mawloc for that? Push and enemy off an objective and kill them, and then do it again, anywhere else on the table.
I think swamping near objectives with Tervigons and far ones with Mawlocs, Gargoyles and rippers is the way to go.

Mawloc doesn't do the "push" a unit anymore, however he does do the "unit sucked into the mouth of the Sarlacc and chewed to a million pieces". Which is probably better But he is also not objective secured, like Skyblight Gargs or Rippers are. Although I see you are saying take some combination which is probably not bad idea. Anyway, Tervigons are still pretty bad. Your enemy is probably going to kill him regardless if he is in Synapse range of your 30 man termagant unit, he nukes them if he goes down. Making Tervigons a priority target isn't great. They are very expensive for what they do, in fact two Electroshock Tervigons costs as much as 3 Mawlocs. He can often be ignored and alot of the points that went into his 200 pts + 30man gant tax are wasted, if they do need to kill him its not too hard and takes a good chunk of your points down with him. I feel like just taking a Tervi is crippling my list. The only way you will ever get your points back out of Tervigons is if they are consistently spawning gant units till end game, as well as get a good Psykey roll, their positioning problems don't arise, and you use them to sufficiently dominate the objectives by sending squads in every direction. Even then I don't know. As said they lack mobility. Just take Rippers or Gargs man =/ I'd much rather 5 ripper squads than a Tervigon.
