Police: Robbery suspect loses 'bet' that victim doesn't have a gun
Posted by Brad Conaway - bio | email
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A man with a gunshot wound was reported, Friday morning, at an apartment complex called the Pines on Watkins Drive; but he wasn't shot there.
Jackson police say, shortly before that, a guest at a nearby Motel 6 had a run in with the man in the rear parking lot.
They say the guest was approached by a man asking for cigarettes.
The hotel guest said he didn't have any cigarettes.
The man began to walk away, when , police say, he turned around and said "I bet you don't have one of these", pointing a gun in his direction.
The guest did have "one of these," and began firing at the suspect. He reportedly hit the man at least once.
The shooting victim left and was later picked up by ambulance at the Pines apartments.
He was hospitalized, but is not being identified at this time.
Right now the man who shot him, a contractor from the coast working in Jackson, is not being charged. He was protected under Mississippi's castle law.
The case will still be presented to the Hinds County Jury.

Robber: "I bet you don't have one of these"
Shooter: "You've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?" *Blam*
Of course, by the time he's done the dramatic quote, the robber has beaten him down and taken his stuff.
Or shot him.
Or watched a movie, considering the delivery time of the line.

That story is awesome, thanks for posting it Ouze.
The response we've already seen in part and will no doubt see dozens more times in which pro-gun people mistakenly think a single incident has meaning for a nation wide issue, is of course, very boring. Almost boring enough to ruin a really awesome news story. Almost.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

The response to those responses where Anti-Gun people mistakenly think that the problem is guns and not people is also very, very boring.

America - full of people and full of guns.
Rest of the developed world - full of people.
America - vastly greater murder rate, with a gun murder rate vastly greater than the rest of the developed world.
Conclusion - the problem is people.
Anyhow, this is boring. The arguments are ridiculous, never thought through, and just spammed over and over again. Have guns, don't have guns, that's up for you guys to decide, I can see merit in a lot of different positions on the argument.
But what isn't acceptable is the complete stupidity which fills the gun debate. Stuff like the argument you make above is just so utterly stupid, and the fact that it gets accepted by anyone is a far greater concern than the issue in your country with gun violence.

That's true. But that's okay, at least over here. We don't much cotton to the, "offer to show them where the hidden valuable stuff is, make them tea, and thank them for their patronage," European attitude towards being robbed.

Round here, we just tie them up, beat them with a lead pipe, and then let our guard dogs do what they wish.

Yeah, that is an interesting difference in culture. When you get the choice between:
- Give the robber your stuff, let him go, get refunded by the assurance company, let the police do its job, maybe catch the guy and send him in prison and
- Start a duel with the robber that will lead to at least one dead
which one would you choose ?
Anyhow, some people like better to give the guy his loot, let him think he won, and then shoot him in the back .

Latin America, full of people and gun laws prohibiting firearms, yet still full of people with machine guns, select fire AKs, and even tanks.

Now of course, you can compare the U.S. to Somalia all you want, and certainly you will find out that the U.S. is much better.
