I've been considering playing a historical wargame and this period, especially the battle of Sekigahara, interested me. Does anyone here know a good war gaming system to use for samurai combat ( free or otherwise?) and a good range of miniatures? I saw these miniatures before, do you think they would be acceptable to use?

If anybody has bought these before, impressions would be lovely!
Thanks in advance!

Ronin is an interesting new ruleset by Osprey. The miniatures for the game are very characterful and are also cheaper than games like infinity and WM.

Ronin is a superb, cheap, well written, and smoothly playing skirmish game. It can work for a broad swath of Japanese warfare, though it is a skirmish game.

Minis can be had through Wargames Factory, the Perry Bros, North Star, Wargames Foundry, Clan War (if you want to use them they have stuff that would work), Kensei, some of Bushido's minis will work, Steel Fist, and others.

a modified version of The P&S or alternatively Black Powder rules could be good for samurai, if you don't mind making up homebrew rulesets.

Zvesda makes plastic 1/72 samurai as well at a high quality and pretty affordable too.

They're really great for the price.

There is also killer katana 2 which is meant to be a decent rule set, one of the guys over on lead adventure is modifying sharpe practice rules to use with samurai too. I personally will be using mind for ronin and for mantics kings of war.

I own the plastic samurai and while they are not bad they are fiddly to put together and I don't enjoy painting them as much as the Perrys so for me they have been relegated to unit fillers that will remain in box until I get around to them, I don't feel well enough to paint often so when I do paint I want to paint the more fun stuff. If you do go all plastic then a pack of the perry unit leaders might look great and the front of your units or as characters.

Personally the extra price you pay for Perrys is worth it.

The army I am working on is from a variety of manufacture a but it's primarily Perrys for the rank and file troops, steel fist for the generals and characters. That's not including the plastics that I haven't been arsed to do much with lately.

I do have a mix of others though, my monks of from the assault group, perry and old glory.

My unarmoued or lightly armoured peasants are a mixture of black hat, perry and forlorn hope.

Samurai are mostly perryy as are my Yari ashigaru. Archers are mostly old Glory though.

In my sig is a link to what I have so far if you are interested also had a few size comparisons, very little is actually painted though

In 15mm there is Battles in an Age of War from Peter Pig and a corresponding line of miniatures. I have a number of the PP minis penny-based for S&G's and they are typical PP (which from my perspective is a compliment). I have been meaning to try out Ronin, and with the positive reviews might pick up a copy if it can be played in 15mm (as I have more than enough to play with).

It would play just fine in 15mm. Maybe scale down the ranges a little, but it wouldn't be required. Most ranged weapons (save the blowpipe and throwing stars) border on line of site (if I remember right, could be misremembering though) given the size of the battlefield you play on.
