I was playing a Warhammer Fantasy game. The opponent cast a spell on me and said I had to roll 28 initiative tests on a unit or they die because of a spell. I roll them, 19 guys die. He said he actually said 8, but forced me to keep the rolls. When I said no he came to my side of the table and started removing my models for me.

He was a terrible sport, you should have tanked his sportsmanship scores in return.

If that story is accurate, I'd have taken that immediately to the TO and probably left the event.

If he's touching your stuff like that, he's 100% out of line. If you misheard and rolled *that* many dice, that's a reroll, making someone keep that roll is both inaccurate for the purposes of the game and unacceptable sportsmanship.

Leaving that game was the right call.

Yeah, the moment he came came at you in a threatening manner you should have called the TO over. That and putting his hands on your army, dude was way outta line

I would've "docked" him in the mouth if he touched my stuff and acted like that. What a piss ant. Honestly though you handled it well. Keeping calm is the best thing to do with people like that. I would've gone to the TO and explained the situation so he could be disqualified.

Ya you handled better than I would have. No one touches my army or books unless they ask. Just common courtesy.

And right there he's wrong. It doesn't matter whose fault it is, the wrong number of dice were rolled and so the result of those dice is irrelevant. The only acceptable thing to do here is to ignore the incorrect dice, roll the appropriate number, and take the result of that.

(Now, this might be different if you rolled the wrong number and then discovered later, after other stuff had been done, that you removed too many casualties. But that's not the case here.)

This is where he should have been kicked out of the tournament. Threatening to abuse the sportsmanship scoring system to force your opponent to do what you want is TFG behavior (and arguably cheating), and the kind of thing that gets people to never come back to a tournament.

And this is where he should have been permanently banned from the store. You absolutely do NOT touch your opponent's models without permission. If the TO is tolerating that kind of behavior in their event then they shouldn't be running tournaments.

Your opponent was TFG. You should have asked the TO to come over and deal with the situation, but your opponent's behavior was clearly way over the line of what is appropriate.

He was completely out of line. Completely. You handled it pretty well, all things considered. Internet tuff guy stuff aside, you would have been within your rights to slug him once he touched your models in my book.

I'm fairly sure he wouldn't have 'won' his argument - at all!

It is unfortunate that this happened to you, but stuff like that is extremely rare at tournaments and I hope this doesn't dissuade you from continuing to attend them.

First of all: shame on him. Touching the enemy models without allowance is a Yellow Card offense. Removing enemy models and putting them away (!) can easily yield to a Red Card and immediate exclusion of the tournament. Touching your opponent's minis is a giant no-go.

Secondly: you did not inform a referee?

Add me to the current pile. I'd have also tanked his sportsmanship score and I would have talked to the TO. Particularly if any of my models were damaged.

Before I go bashing on the supposed TFG opponent, I need to ask what kind of tournament was this? Also, more importantly, how old were both of you guys? I ask this not to bash on anyone's age but rather out of curiosity.

Arguably, you opponents behavior was completely unsportsmanlike and his actions should clearly be reprimanded but I feel that the current story and facts are incomplete.

Were there no TOs or judges? This is an easy one...

A well-run event would have had a judge come over, settle it in your favor then have a one-on-one with the dude post game to tell him what needs to happen for him to be allowed to stay in the tourney.

And who arbitrarily rolls 28 die without actually know what is going on? Especially with something which will clearly demolish your unit.

No judge involvement, over the top story, 2 posts... I am skeptical that it happened this way or happened at all.

Whenever I hear a case like this one, I tend to wonder if I'm getting the full and accurate story.

Doesn't matter if everything is accurate in this case. I doubt he is making up the touching models thing, even if the rest is only his version. He saw an opportunity to win-out on the misunderstanding AND punish you for not paying "appropriate" attention to him, I think I would have laughed.

I told him that if he is going to be mean and unsportsmanlike I'm not playing him.

You were correct and not playing him was rather obvious at that point.

He told me it was my fault for mishearing what I said, and if I don't want people touching my army I should have followed the rules.

A reminder of the consequence of "not following the rules" of touching another man's property and getting him sacked right then and there really needed to be done.

As i was doing that he kept saying how unsportsman like i was being, how i was cheating, and how people like me ruin tournaments by cheating the rules.

Only in correcting the situation if found wrong, the proportion of response was way out of line.

I have a big red button for bullies, I make a point to get in their face pretty quick.
Any response or "advice" I could give would probably be inappropriate and disproportionate to rude behavior over a game of man toys.

If he wanted to be WAAC, I could see him saying that you made more than 8 failed attempts and that 8 should die. That would still be a pretty dick move but at least I could say ok hes just WAAC.

But to keep that many rolls is wrong, i would have contacted the TO and had them work it out.

Touching your models is 100% out of line and if a TO didn't penalize him just for that I would be upset with the Tournament Staff in general.

If you were leaving and they didn't do anything about it and planned not to come back.... I would have packed up all my stuff and tableflipped his stuff to the floor and walked out like a boss.

Yeah touching your models is out of line, removing them from the table and dropping them into your figure case is out of line. Even if they are not painted.

Ive been in the tournament scene since 98 and I have never heard of anything like this. I've heard of intimidation tactics but this is crazy.

Yikes. Keep an eye on that guy. He should probably not be allowed outside to interact with the general public.

I think it was obvious he was cheating. If it was 8 dice, why did he stand by and watch you roll 28 dice? Why did he sit there and watch you tally up 19 men before he corrected you?

I would have gone to the TO. If he started touching my models, there might have been a little more than words exchanged.


For future reference, though, it helps to go into a tournament fully prepared. If you did not know the spell he was casting, then ask him to see the rules, just so you know. When I played 40K, I knew every codex back to front. I know many people don't care to do that themselves, so if you're going into a tournament unprepared, don't hesitate to ask to see that particular spell - especially if it may mean you're losing 28 men!

Grabbing another persons minatures is NEVER appropriate. He is lucky you are very nice I would have put my hands on him for grabbing my things and throwing them. That guy needs an attitude adjustment in the form of a kick in the ass. Thats just garbage and if I were you I would have reported it to the TO and as a TO I would have put his behavior on blast for every to know who this KING BABY is.

I have played with at least 30 strangers over the years, I always had a good craic and not a single one of them would have done anything other than said "8 mate, not 28!" and told me to reroll them.
