Someone at my local GW stated (during a game) that since Murderang's Claws-O-Murder have a fixed strength characteristic they don't benefit from furious charge.

This strikes me as odd. The rule for furious charge says '...a model adds +1 to its strength characteristic...'

This would seem to suggest that he is right since you don't use Murderfang's strength characteristic, but rather his weapon's, which would then not benefit from furious charge.

Is this wrong or just a poorly written rule?

One of them filthy casuals...

Check the rules for "Multiple Modifiers" your answer is there.

He would benefit from furious charge when his weapons are destroyed from vehicle damage

As far as I remember you get the bonus if its S is given by the weapon characteristics. Only if a rule says "its final strength is XXX" or "reduces its strength to XXX " you wont benefit from FC.

The weapon has S7, it doesn't care how much Strength Murderfang has.
Murderfang could have S1, or S10, and he would still hit at S7.

Furious Charge increases his Strength by 1, but that doesn't matter since his attacks look at the Strength of the weapon.

Or if the Weapon has a set Strength-value.
I think a good example would be a Librarian with a Boltgun.
Let's say the Librarian gets Iron Arm and has +3 Strength.
Does the Boltgun now shoot at S7? I think not.

Similar to the -1S on Lysander.

His weapon is s10, not (s+1)x2. Therefore, any changes to *his* strength do not affect his weapon.

Strength of a model, and strength of an attack are two different characteristics. Most of the time, attack strength for a melee weapon is derived from the weapon ('s', 's+1', or 'sx2'). But there are exceptions (such as Lysander, Murderfang, and almost every ranged weapon in the game).

Now I am curious.. Is there a ranged weapon that uses the 'user-strength' in some way?

Do their weapons have a listed str?

If so that is a set value, and with set values you need to check the rules for "Multiple Modifiers" your answer is there.

As above.

NOticed this as soon as I read it - essentially he has no benefit from Furious Charge, unless he manages to get 2 weapon destroyed results AND no other result (as that would leave him on 1HP)

He does also have IWND, so it's not entirely implausible.

It's because it is a new codex and people misunderstand the rules.
That has nothing to do with disliking an army.

It is a bit of a pointless USr for him though. I think intent was otherwise but indeed, RaW is clear and i do hope they notice the futility of it.
