Subject: Dreadnought -new game from E3 that looks pretty interesting
Perkustin wrote:There are a myriad of games that convincingly add scale to space. Many of which are decades old. It's far easier, you require only a cubemap and a few features to fill the space. This means you can have insane draw distances, decently high-poly structures and still maintain a decent framerate. You can literally have objects miles in size and miles apart.
You can do all of this in-atmosphere, too. Inserting a "ground" does not remove any of the other options.
Also, I'm confused now - did you mean scale as in "this map looks big" or as in "these ships feel huge"? I thought we were talking about the latter.
Perkustin wrote:it also goes without saying that having such craft in-atmosphere is totally redundant. Assuming that mobility of these craft is governed by a finite resource and that the laws of physics apply, taking such craft in-atmosphere would be highly inefficient.
Perhaps they have a core of some new material that is much lighter than air (aka hi-tech zeppelin, just with way more lift). Perhaps they use element zero and a mass effect generator to alter the ship's weight. Perhaps they are powered by fission engines capable of supplying the vessel with energy for decades before a need to refuel. And perhaps the weapons systems do not have a sufficient range (in terms of accuracy -- you don't need an airship if you just want to carpet-bomb an area anyways) to allow ground support from orbit, requiring these fortresses to go down and hover over the ground.
And perhaps they just wanted to make a cool game.

Y'know, as much as this looks badass, I can't help but feel that 'dreadnoughts' fighting in atmo makes almost zero sense. I mean, bombardment wise, maybe or perhaps to deliver troops...but to combat other capital ships? *shrug*

That's the thing - if you use them as artillery pieces and for troop deployment, then what happens if two of those meet in the skies?
I'd see "capital ship duels" more like a byproduct of their mission rather than the original intent. The first warships on the sea were not built to fight other warships either, but to do something else (after all, there is no sense in just destroying an enemy's navy just for its own sake).

Personally, I prefer the Gratuitous Space Battles variant of "why are these ships fighting here".
"BECAUSE LASERS, DAMNIT."
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I mean, it looks like 'Mechwarrior-instead-of-mechs-use-giant-ships', which means anyone can play but the guys who spend a minimum of fifty bucks will end up winning more often.
Hopefully they charge a proper game price, 50-60 bucks and you don't have the PTW bs like you see so often now. This could be SO awesome if they have the sack to avoid the F2P business model that everyone has been doing.

When I read the title I thought it was gonna be a cool space naval combat game where you command from the bridge and direct gun fire and make commandery decisions. Like where to put shields and where the power is gonna be distributed along with placement of your ship and directing fighter and bomber craft from your hangars etc.
Does a game like that exist?
I mean, this one looks nice but its just not the kinda game for me.

I've been looking for something much the same as you, and it would seem that this is about as close as it gets.

I mean, I suppose that the closest you could get to a true capitol ship commanding space "simulator" is Star Trek Online, but the whole, having to leave my ship to do ANYTHING other than blow up other ships/travel to locations to blow up other ships bothered the hell out of me.

No fighters or bombers, but did you ever play Star Trek: Bridge Commander?

I tried the online Startrek one, but didnt like it. All the walking and MMO style stuff kind of put the focus away from the space combat aspect it felt like.
I didnt get far in that game.

FTL is probably as close as you're going to get to something like what you want, it isn't bad or anything, it's a fun little indie game that lets you control nearly every aspect of the ship. Then again, now that I think about it, it's more that you're the ship itself than a commander...
Edit: Just watched the video and it looks boss. Now, if that's just a gameplay demo, coolbeans, but from what I saw it looks very similar to the 'get a random team of people together and fight over nothing' type multiplayer games I've been seeing (MW, WoT) and if that's the case I'll be steering clear. If they make an actual game out of it, I'll be all over this.

It will have an episodic campaign written by Dan Abnett.

Yeah, pre-ordering this. I don't even care that it's in Alpha.
