(cant comment on 3rd)
in 4th people used to just want to build some of their OP builds from 3rd (as is usual) and complained about eldar and tau skimmer spam (hey, i know this....). A lot of codexes were mono-build but you had some viable lists that could do well if given a very skilled pilot. 5th was a much different beast, with the game ramping up hugely in power and invalidating a lot of the older codexes (crons, demonhunters, DE) until they got their new, and even more OP, codexes. However, i enjoyed 4th and 5th because they had a (looking back) slim ruleset that summarized things that didnt fit the scale of the game (fliers, removing models, ect). Also, you had the appeal of a significantly changing environment every time a new codex came out. Codexes started looking like rock paper scissors every time a new one came out as each new codex had something to counteract the latest 'power' codex. The core rules were abusable, but much simpler, so there was less of a push for a rewrite and more for a tweaking of the rules (which, to its credit, 6th did fix a lot of the problems. It just added a fuckton more problems too)
6th is when the 'Rules need rewrite' crowed started really growing. The bloat of special rules, fliers, look out sir, hull points, removed model from front, ect. The ruleset became much more bloated and had a lot of skirmish-type rules mashed in with army-type rules.

Nope, because the release cycle was much slower then. It took ~4 years per edition and we got new codices every ~5 years (I think once you average it out). Now the release cycle is so fast that we may very well see every codex being less than 2.5 years old and a new edition in only 2 years, a lot of people are thinking "so, err, where do you go from here?" because we don't want to see the entire game recycled every 2 years.

No wonder we go to Games Day to do our favourite part of The Hobby. We just want to keep buying GW stuff, no matter how often we get our stuff invalidated all the time.
Well, 18 month edition revises is actually far too long imo. It's the age of the internet, they should be updating and FAQ'ing as issues are found. At the very least monthly.
The real issue is not the time frame, its the pricetag attached to it. $140 here for a copy of 7th. Pathetic. No doubt they will have ridiculous prices attached to 8th.
$30 should be the cost. I'd settle for $40, and CONSIDER buying it at $50. Triple that? please

They don't have that with Dataslates and I wouldn't be surprised if the Sister of Battle got a Dataslate instead of a Codex or a White Dwarf release.
Codexes would sell a lot better at £15 rather than £30.

Can't remember if I said this or not, but after buying 6th edition codex on iPad then 6 months later becoming null and void I don't think I want 7th to become null and void, especially all the codices as well.
You telling me GW is ramping up their schedule just so they can reboot 40K and make everything what everyone bought become Null and Void?
I don't want a new edition, let a lone a reboot. I am not buying anything new anymore now, because it just seems what I buy will be invalidated in 2 years or less. I don't mind paying for a quality or premium product, but when I don't see the quality there, and it doesn't last long, I see no VALUE in anything GW is putting out.
Maybe we should have a poll to see what people would want. Reboot/new edition/leave 7th for a few more years.

Well, we have 3 soft covers left, and after that, a bunch of hardbacks need to be updated to 7th, and moreso just need to be updated (CSM for example). That will take a good nother year or so, and on top of End Times and Fantasy, GW has enough on their plate for the time being. But after that? No idea what they'll do.

I'm not sure they will update the hardbacks for 7th, at least not immediately. If they are going to update all the hardbacks, they're really doing their best to push the patience and wallets of their customers when a $50 codex only lasts a little over 2 years.

I mean, a lot of people wouldn't really mind that, and rumors are they're already working on parts of the CSM book. And it only makes sense. Plus, some books would only need the addition of formations/detachments and the like.

Well, look at the current codex releases. They are fully uninspired. The rules for the new GK codex could have been made within a week.
Not sure what they will do after all codices were released as hard cover books - there are 3 40k and 3 Fantasy armies left.
I guess they will relasee new rule books and re-cycle.

First off -
THERE ARE MANY EXPENSIVE THINGS IN THE THIS WORLD, BUT ON THIS SITE WE DO NOT ADVOCATE PIRATING ANY OF THEM, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM DOING SO IN THIS THREAD.
Secondly, as I said this is all speculation, but I'm basing it on what GW has done in the past when they 'finished' a game ( 40k 2nd edition and fantasy 6th IIRC) and what would be the path of least resistance.
I would love GW to make new factions, to turn the Adeptus Mech, Chaos Cults and other lesser factions into full armies with tons of plastic crack but that's y'know a lot of work.
Rewriting the Space Marine codex so all squads need 12 models, well that would boost sales 20% without sculpting a single new model
Sure far sighted management, respect for customers and a properly humble opinion of how 'indispensible' you are should stop GW from doing a reboot...
But this is GW we're talking about.

I sincerely doubt we see the day of "the last codex updated". Either because their business model will never allow it to happen or simply because the company will be out of business before it does (but I guess that would be mean we saw the last codex update!).

There has yet to be a time past RT where all the codexes were in the current edition.
at this point if gw updates them all, -if-, I am guessing they are going to drop supplements that add more fromations/detachements/dataslates is that is becoming the new mode of army selection.
there are still unit types we have not seen that have been hinted at in the rulebook, such as units with no faction, units that take up no FoC and do not require another unit to unlock them. Etc.
We have not seen any fortifications for xenos.
Lots of options to put new things out before a new version of 40k.
I think the idea of "rebooting" before all codexes is out, might be out dated.

LOL do the mods work for GW now? Since when is it against forum policy to state that you pirated something.... This should be added to the rules if it's a rule, but based on threads like the recast thread which saw zero moderation, I'm pretty sure this is just one of the overeager mods being a little too zealous...

They don't have that with Dataslates and I wouldn't be surprised if the Sister of Battle got a Dataslate instead of a Codex or a White Dwarf release.
Pretty much what he said.
Once every army has a shiny new hardcover codex GW can release any new models they want, for any faction, with a DLC and White Dwarf entry for the rules for the new model. We'll essentially playtest it for them, and they rules for it will be adjusted when the applicable codex get's rereleased.
Also, this approach would let them create a new army, a single unit/vehicle/model at a time. The rules, which would be in White Dwarf and DLC, would then be collected and redistributed in codex format when they had sufficient models for a full codex. Prior to the codex they would be available as allies and unbound.

I don't see this happening.
IMO they will release all the codices then focus on single model releases and dataslates into the near future. IMO 7th is here to stay for quite a while. I don't see them issuing a reboot any time soon, especially 7th is basically 6th with a psychic phase.

I can't think of any where this is the case... especially considering laws are very different in different countries, and most forums people talk about their experiences with a certain degree of anonymity as well... it certainly isn't the case on these forums regardless, judging by the rules, and this thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/603645.page which saw moderators post but no "criminal endorsement" moderation.

Games Workshop is waaaaay to fkkn greedy for this. I'm willing to bet right after Crons, BA and DE have been updated, they will start all over with DA, Daemons, CSM and SM.
After all, the only thing 6th edition codices have in common with 7th is the hardback format and warlord traits table. Apart from those they are wholly different - artwork instead of pictures, armylist section, no formations, no maelstrom of war stuff etc.

That would require an assumption that GW harbors any feeling for people who have already bought an army from them. The only time GW seems to show "feelings" is when they say that people who sell and buy models for under GW store prizes are stealing and not helping the hobby.
