I'm deeply concerned for how this disease outbreak is going to affect the places where my friends and family live. Legitimately so.

Is ebola scary? Yes. Would I want to be going into a region where the outbreak is occurring? No. Am I scared that I, or anyone I know, will catch ebola? No. And I say that as someone who works with research labs in a medical facility located in the heart of a major city. I also have loved ones working directly with patient specimens in said medical facility, and even then, I am not really worried about this despite the potential for contact my significant other and mother both have with patient specimens. You appear to be mad that people aren't hysterical with fear over this, Peter Wiggin. Is fear of ebola actually keeping you up at night? Have you been in an isolation room in a hospital? They are pretty impressive, as are the procedures for keeping the bugs in that room and away from the public. The patient being treated in Dallas is not going to be exposed to the general public. That patient is threat to the healthcare workers administering treatment and of course anyone on the plane who was enjoying the patient's body fluids, but this isn't like the movie Outbreak where some jackass in a movie theater coughs and a town dies. We have more trained medical staff, medical procedures for isolating patients, and the facilities to treat ebola than the African countries that are suffering the worst of this epidemic. We also, as a culture, do not necessarily disbelieve healthcare workers and machete them to death when they try and educate us about a potential illness. No do we bury our dead quite like they do. So I think we are cool, man.

My professional medical opinion is that certain posters will die from a bleeding ulcer or a high blood pressure induced stroke before they ever get close to Ebola.

But I guess the irrational fear of Ebola will be the underlying cause, so Ebola gets to count the kill.

Annnd my friend just sent me a message on FB that her best friend's mom has been diagnosed with Ebola and she contracted it in Dallas, the only reported diagnosed infection is a man that flew back from Liberia. This is a CLOSE friend I have known for years and years who would not even front about this type of thing.

Literally just feel like the rug got pulled out from under me. This is NOT the single case being reported in the news.

As a medical professional, do you rate the possibility of Ebola Bath Salts being effective in ringing in the doom of mankind?

And to the other dink that just got blocked, yes the idea of a highly infectious & deadly disease such as a hemorrhagic fever outbreak in a US city actually DOES keep me up at night on occasion.

Not to make light of this, but you just posted that a friend of a friend's mom has ebola. Without any proof, your claim is akin to someone posting in the N&R forum that they heard a GW employee say a plastic Thunderhawk is being released next week. Take it with lots of salt.

If you really want to never sleep again I can post a long list of diseases that are way more common, way more infectious, and will kill you in ways that would make you wish that you could enjoy the relatively quick death that Ebola would give you. And I am confident that I would not be lying if I tell you that you are encountering these people every single day.

This is a real life friend I've known for years and trust pretty strongly. She has no reason to fib about someone telling her their mother was diagnosed w/ebola. I asked her to keep me in the loop if she hears anything else.
