No argument from me. We've got more than enough weapons and resources to be utterly self sufficient.

This made me smile.... are you going to shoot the virus?

I dunno, are our soldiers in Africa going to shoot the virus?

The amount of self deception and complacency in this thread scares the living crap out of me. Seriously and with no exaggeration.

They are going to shoot the virus with science, by which I mean decent emergency healthcare facilities and experience.

I still want to know what you have against your own country doing its best to try and help other countries whose healthcare system can barely cope with a pretty nasty vector.

Interesting response, I'd like to know your underlying motivation. Its certainly not a comment based in pragmatic analysis.

I'm happy to answer your question though. Because I don't view that as the job of the US military. I don't agree with sending young men and women who sign up to be warfighters (or to pay for college) into an epidemic zone. That viewpoint is my right, and your attempts at shaming me because I place a high value on those lives is odd.

If you want an example of why I worry a lot about a highly contagious/lethal vector being brought back into the US because of non-existent screening procedures. I'd say that the situation in Dallas shows there is a high degree of legitimacy to this concern. The people in that city are scared as hell right now, check on forums. Talk to friends and family YOU have in the region. Those scared people are potentially WAY more dangerous than the virus itself, and managing that fear (preemptively) with proper preventative screening didn't happen. Part of managing the fear that people feel in the face of infectious diseases means policy designed pointedly to prevent its spread....not open the window for massive cross contamination.

If the virus spreads to Latin America, we're boned. Imagine hundreds of thousands of refugees pouring over the border trying to get out of the epidemic zone, many of them already infected.

Now being reported that school children were in contact with Patient Zero

Yeah, and Dallas is a hub for human trafficking.

Talk to my parents, little brother, his wife to be, members of her family, my grandparents, friends in Austin, friends in Dallas, and other assorted people in the area as well as people traveling to the wedding. Funny story, most of them had already researched ways they could contract and outside of that aren't worried about it.

Crazy thing knowledge.....

@Frazz

They had already actually mentioned that in your previous article. It said they are under observation and not attending school. Everyone in contact with "patient zero" will be under observation for 21 days and admitted at the sign of symptoms. Seems relatively open and shut assuming the guy is a US citizen or didn't decide to hide any of his activities since showing symptoms.

To be fair...isn't it just ONE person in this thread?

And to answer your first question, I think it's usually some combination of a lack of perspective about the world, an overactive imagination, and a lack of real problems in one's life.

To answer your second question...why do you suddenly need an excuse?

He's not a US citizen. He's a Liberian who flew here on a trip to see friends and family. The hospital didn't ask him about his travel history and he didn't volunteer any information.

Just for funsies:

Total Ebola deaths with this outbreak (per the CDC): 3,091
*Deaths in the US from AIDS: 7,683
*Deaths in the US from Hepatitis: 7,850
*Deaths in the US from malnutrition: 3,191
*Deaths in the US from Alzheimer's: 84,974
*Deaths in the US from pneumonia: 52,294
*Deaths in the US from car accidents: 38,023
*Deaths in the US from falling down: 27,483
Deaths from medical care: between 98,000 and 440,000

(*all numbers for 2011 thanks to the CDC)

If you are this scared because of Ebola, but you continue to have sex, get a tattoo or piercing, drive in a car, walk, or see a doctor (they killed many more people than Ebola) then you really need to reevaluate your outlook on life. Especially since medical people are telling you what you really need to know:

- Ebola is fairly easy to contain because it is only able to be transmitted when you show symptoms. Once you have a patient that shows symptoms you track everybody that they had contact with. We have a lot of experience with that due to tracking influenza, tuberculosis, SARS, etc. Epidemiology is a very advanced field in the US and people are a lot easier to track here than in Africa.
- We are very well aware of how it is transmitted and are able to properly isolate
- Facilities and supplies are a major contributor to the rate of infection. They don't have the hospitals to actually isolate these people. They don't have the rooms in the hospital to actually isolate these people. They don't have the gloves to wear to actually treat these people. Sierra Leone has ~2,450 hospital beds in the entire country. That number is going to be a lot less since hospitals have shut down because of staff being sick. I have 3,683 hospital beds in my county alone. I am pretty confident in saying that I have more doctors and medical staff working in Oklahoma County than any one of these countries. That's why our soldiers are over there shooting the virus. Because instead of shooting the virus they are actually building hospitals and then getting the hell out of there.

Ebola isn't some super disease that kills because it is so contagious that we cannot isolate it or treat it. It spreads because the places affected don't have the resources to isolate patients or track their exposures. It would be interesting to see what the actual death rate of Ebola would look like in a developed country that can provide proper supportive care to the body as it fights the infection.

Being scared of Ebola in the US because of what is happening in Africa makes as much sense as being scared that you are going to die of starvation tomorrow because 3,000,000 children died of starvation in Africa last year.

Nobody is saying that Ebola can't happen here, obviously it can. But everyone that isn't trying to profit from fear (aka everybody not trying to sell advertising based on page views or ratings) is pretty clear on how we have the resources to stop a highly contagious and deadly disease. We know that because we are doing it all the time already.

@d-usa: I recently read an article that explained how just getting the right fluids into those infected can make a fairly dramatic difference in terms of outcome. Seems fairly clear that Ebola is so deadly OVER THERE because of medical/cultural/etc. issues they have OVER THERE.

Bro, I'm honestly way more "scared" of myself being injured riding my bike to class today than I am of catching ebola. I will DAMN sure tell you that I am worried as hell for what could happen with this outbreak in a densely populated city (and transit hub) for the sake of the folks that live there. I'm also very worried about the possibility for scared people to hurt each other. If you're not worried about those then fine, but I think its doing a disservice to imply that anyone who IS concerned is dumb or whatever. Paranoid....hell I'll wear that one.

As for "fairly easy to contain"....obviously this is NOT the case or this thread wouldn't even exist.

If its easy to contain why did the US army just send a brigade to fight it in Africa? Why is the UN, CDC< and Obama freaking out?
We have a mystery bug thats just gone through children like wildfire here, with the first death. We can't control that. How are you going to control ebola if it really gets going?

EDIT: I'm actually supportive of the move. I think more needs to be done frankly. Even if nothing happens here, billions living in poor conditions are susceptible.

Or a reasonable viewpoint might be that having a thread about the one guy with Ebola, knowing who he is and who he had contact with, is pretty good evidence that we have the means to monitor for it and track it and contain it.

Then you have yourself a plot for a nice suspense movie.

What If's are nice. Whens the last time that actually happened? Don't remember Swine/Bird Flu, Anthrax, West Nile, etc; running rampant around the country nor a mass influx across the border of infected cases for these 'epidemics' of the past 10 years or so that were equally hyped like Ebola

Hey, in addition to "it can be airborne here are two articles saying that it's not to prove that it can be" we now have "everybody should be scared" and "people who are scared will be the most dangerous".

The next 48 hours matter if anybody would be claiming that there is zero risk, that's not what is happening.

Only time will tell on that one, we're certainly better equipped than developing nations in Africa. We don't handle highly infectious diseases with a 50+% fatality rate every day though. Esp ones with a 2 week incubation period. There are legitimate reasons to be concerned about this crap.

But like I said, I sincerely hope that you're right and I am just paranoid.
