Could people please stop calling her a nurse? Because she actually isn't one nor does she have any medical training, she is a nursing assistant, that is someone that is contracted to usually just do clean up work, deliver meals, that sort of thing.

Why they let someone that doesn't have any type of medical training, much less any type of training is this specific situation, into direct contact with the patients is anybody's guess...

Maybe over there... But, and I may be wrong on this one, but here in the US most, if not all nursing assistants DO have medical training, or are in the process of becoming a higher level of nurse.

Indeed, in this Ebola-infested hellscape, when the streets pool with blood, isn't it wise to just end it all before your organs boil out of your mouth and\or anus?

Not over here, here they are just 'civilians' that are hired to do that type of work, and from the interviews that they are running on the TV with Spanish doctors its the same thing in Spain.

One of the nurses assistant workers representatives was saying that they had no training or drills to deal with infecto-contagious situations and that the only directions that they got was a small lecture on what the proper proceedings are.

Speaking from (mostly second hand) personal experience, there are multiple proceedings that need to be respected when removing protective clothing that may be contaminated, there is an order on which pieces must be removed first and in what way, etc, these are things that can not be learned just from a lecture, they need to be demonstrated and practised so that no mistakes can be made.

If like the news said, she had come into contact with any infectious fluid, then made a mistake in removing her protective garment and touched any part of her skin, that is enough to catch it, but its also a HUGE breach of protocol on any isolation ward and heads should roll because of this.

Looks like the Dallas ebola patient has died. Figured it was pretty grim when they said he was on the vent/dialysis...

Looks like some of the Spanish nurse associations and animal activists are protesting, as the CNA that has ebola reported she had just treated an ebola patient and had a fever several times...then was sent back home. Guess incompetency in healthcare isn't limited by national borders...

The Dallas patient, was he a US citizen/valid immagrant or did he just randomly come over from Africa?

If hes an African national, the poor quality of life/health standards probably didn't help him either, as well as hiding his condition.

Though looking forward to Peter's freak-out.

He was a Liberian national who came from Monrovia to Dallas.

Ebola patient dies in Texas hospital. Total of 8 patients in Europe as of this morning.

Thomas Eric Duncan, the man with Ebola who traveled to the United States from Liberia, died Wednesday morning at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas

Well, this should be interesting. I wonder if our society is stupid enough to fly his remains back to Liberia.

Is it easier to poke fun at my paranoia than it is to contemplate how awful this is for the folks in Africa, and shudder to think of it happening in a Western city? Yeah...probably.

Birmingham, UK

And there is still no need to panic.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29542129

The UK is sending 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone to help deal with the deadly Ebola outbreak, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed.

He said the UK would also send a medical ship, the RFA Argus, and three Merlin helicopters.

Confirming the measures, Mr Hammond said: "We all have to do more if we are going to prevent what is currently a crisis from becoming a catastrophe."

More than 3,400 people have died in the outbreak, mostly in West Africa.

In Sierra Leone the death toll is at least 678. Save the Children has reported the rate of infection is rapidly increasing there, with five new cases every hour.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, which has so far infected more than 7,200 people.

It comes as:

A Texas hospital says the first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the US, Eric Duncan, has died
The US Department of Homeland Security orders agents at airports and other ports to "observe" arrivals for potential signs of Ebola
Public Health England repeats that there are no plans to introduce screening for those arriving in the UK
Further details emerge about the case of a Spanish nurse infected with Ebola - the first person known to have contracted the virus outside West Africa
Mr Hammond, speaking at a press conference in Washington with US Secretary of State John Kerry, said UK military and civilian teams were already in Sierra Leone, working on constructed a medical facility with 700 Ebola treatment beds.

He said that at a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency committee in London - which he joined via video link from the British embassy in Washington - the decision was made to deploy the RFA Argus to Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, along with three Merlin helicopters.

Mr Hammond said trials of a new primary care triage system for those with early stage symptoms of Ebola was also taking place.

He said: "This disease is an unprecedented threat that knows no borders. We have to get ahead of this disease. If we get ahead of it and rise to the challenge, we can contain it and beat it."

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary Argus
He said the UK had committed more than $200m to the programme in Sierra Leone.

And he urged other countries to commit not only money but more resources, including trained medical personnel, to efforts to combat the virus.

The usual role of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Argus is to serve as a casualty receiving ship and the vessel is equipped 100-bed medical complex. The helicopters will be based off the coast and will help to move UK forces.

Forty British military engineers have already travelled to the country to make sure the facilities can be set up, and they will be joined by logisticians and medics.

BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said 100 troops had been due to travel to the country next week but they will now be joined by hundreds more.

"It shows Britain is clearly worried about this and is ramping up its efforts in the same way the US has done," said our correspondent.

US troops
Three hundred American troops have been deployed to neighbouring Liberia, also badly affected by the Ebola outbreak, to set up field hospitals.

About 3,000 more US soldiers are due to arrive there in the coming days to help with logistical support and training for health workers.

In the US, the Department of Homeland Security said passengers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea would have their temperatures taken and have to answer questions, according to Reuters news agency.

But Public Health England said there were still no plans to follow suit.

In the case of the Spanish nurse, a doctor in Madrid has said Teresa Romero remembers touching her face with her gloves after treating a dying priest.

A World Health Organization adviser earlier warned that more cases could be expected among medical staff, even in developed countries.

Pertinent info re the Spanish case.

No, I mean 8 "confirmed" cases.

Meanwhile, Frederic Vincent, a spokesman for the European Commission, told CNN on Wednesday that there have been eight confirmed cases of Ebola in European countries. There is one case in the United Kingdom that has been treated and the person has recovered; one case in France like that; two cases in Germany in which patients are receiving treatment; and three cases in Spain: two deceased Spanish missionaries and a nurse's assistant who is being treated.

Lets also remember that "recovered" persons still have ebola virus in their semen, breast milk, etc. In semen the virus can live up to 6 months, and is an STD. No idea how long the virus lives in female reproductive cells.

Worse than that; he's counting people who caught the disease in Africa and were flown to Europe for the specific purpose of recieving treatment as part of the "outbreak in Europe".

That to me is perhaps one of the most troubling things. The CDC and national health organizations are telling us that they have things well in hand and that any outbreak here will be easily dealt with because of our superior knowledge, training, and equipment - yet that is twice now that patients with Ebola have told health care professionals their symptoms and possible contact with the disease, yet have been sent home untreated, while they are symptomatic, and infectious.

Yes, some major mistakes have been made.

Outside of everything else, one of the more worrisome aspects of this is how long ebola remains in a male body after he is non symptomatic/contagious. I remember studies completed in the 80s finding ebola present in a man's semen up to 7 weeks after they were non-symptomatic and I believe the WHO suggested that survivors use condoms for up to 90 days post infection. The second part that will be concerning after this outbreak is contained, will be breast milk of mothers--as I believe ebola lives for a couple of weeks in breast milk. They've theorized in past outbreaks on how certain females acquired ebola, since they can find the virus in downstream semen, but the truth is--I don't think they are sure what will happen.

Of course, condoms and formula would help alleviate any post infection issues but those are not exactly easy to acquire goods in West Point/Monrovia nor is the community at those areas trusting of western supplies/instruction. That's why I said earlier in the thread, there is a very real chance we could be looking at an ebola virus that becomes endemic to certain areas of west africa, with regular human to human transmission---instead of a bush meat/cluster scenario (which I believe has been the origin of all previous outbreaks).

It's better to be safe than sorry.

I would like to remind everyone, again, that the first symptoms of Ebola virus disease are no different than those of the flu.
