Kendall Fisher wrote:Tori Spelling Quarantined in Hospital With Symptoms of Ebola
Tori Spelling was quarantined after being hospitalized this weekend for displaying several Ebola-like symptoms.
According to TMZ, the actress was running a fever, coughing uncontrollably and having trouble breathing when she was taken to Cedars Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills, Calif.
With all the cases of Ebola popping up in the US lately, doctors took extra precaution and quarantined Spelling from other patients while treating her.
Fortunately, she was not carrying Ebola, but instead admitted for a severe case of bronchitis and a sinus infection. Doctors are still running additional blood tests, and a lung specialist has been called in to help cure the bronchitis.
Tori had to cancel a schedule press tour for the second season of her reality show True Tori to work on getting better.

So on NPR this morning i heard the CDC has issued guidelines that healthcare workers be "covered head to toe".
Thats a bit different than Droplet precautions....
I wonder why the extra cautionary measures for something not so hard to get....?

Starting back up with the conspiracies again, are we?
If it is so easy to catch, why have only two people caught it from the roughly 8 contracted the disease?

Because two people caring for him when he was most infections got sick, so they are in "better safe than sorry mode" and "cover your ass" mode.
The people living with him and sharing his bed did not get the disease that really isn't that easy to get. Automatically Appended Next Post: I think in done posting actual facts about the disease. Yeah, it's much "easier" to get when you are a medical professional dealing directly with bodily fluids with high viral counts.
By the way, that is neither a new nor earth-shattering notion so I don't understand why that is constantly being touted as a "Gotcha!" moment around here. It doesn't do anything but confirm what we already know about how the disease is spread.

DERP because the CDC didn't recommend that BEFORE at least two nurses got sick DERP.

Eight Ebola patients have been treated in the US during the course of this outbreak and the only one that passed it to anyone was the guy who as being treated before his diagnosis.
Accord to the R0 number for Ebola, each person on average passes it to two more people. We've had at least eight patients and only two people have gotten sick, opposed to the average of sixteen. Now my maths aren't the best, but I'm confident that 2 < 16... So I'd say we're doing pretty good.

This...exactly.
Don't go around telling medical professionals that droplet precaution is all you need for how many weeks now....and all of a sudden do a mea culpa and an about face while telling professionals to burka-up.
As a medical professional myself, THAT is the thing that pisses me off the most. The constant backtracking and ineptitude.
I have zero fear I am going to contract Ebola. People don't come to Iowa...they leave it..for good reason.

Oh...and another thing the CDC is *finally* reco mmending to professionals: Use of a Respirator (such as the N95).
Again...why did they wait so long to do this?! Workers in Africa already followed these protocols.....are we so much smarter and better than the professionals who have been fighting ebola for months/years/decades...?

Well, there isn't a problem to fix and we've already covered the idea that the person in charge of logistics doesn't have to be a doctor.
Like D said mentioned before, look at the boards of hospitals and other healthcare facilities and you'll find the same thing. If this were the Surgeon General, you'd have a case... But it isn't.
EDIT: I'm convinced that if Obama had picked Jesus Christ for the position, people would still find something to bitch about.

If there wasn't a problem why did the nurses have the wrong protocol? How did the other nurse get advised its ok to be on a plane? How was she allowed on a plane? Can't bitch about someone who-as you noted-is irrelevant.

Frazz...
It falls squarely on that Nurse and the institution implementing that protocol.
Sure, things could've been handled better by the CDC and Obama administration... but, the magic happens in the Clinical Areas... not what the government "recommends".

I thought the 8 signs, in one doctors waiting room, telling travelers from Africa who may exhibit symptoms similar to Ebola to stay away and contact by phone, were quite amusing.
8 signs in one waiting room.
Surely it would be better to communicate this efficiently, maybe by placing the sign by the doors. or at ports and airports, channel tunnel stops?
The signs were obscuring more important info, like that asking people if their cold is really a reason to see the doctor.

The CDC said in an television interview that their initial guidelines were inadequate and wrong--and that the Texas hospital followed the suggested guidelines at the time. It appears the guidelines were more for field treatment rather than acute care--and now they've changed them.
So, it appears it was;
CDC not having the proper guidelines
The Hospital followed the CDC guidelines
The guidelines were inadequate and the nurses contracted ebola
So, it appears it was on the CDC, although I'm surprised the hospital didn't clarify on what protocol they should be following--when they saw their nurses would have skin exposed during treatment. Knowing this, I feel sorry for the hospital and the nurses--I read the CEO took out a two page ad apologizing to the public about the incident--but doubt it will do any good. That hospital will forever be the "Ebola hospital" now and no amount of rebranding, Studer Excellence Awards or JCAHO accreditation will be able to wipe that away.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
It's difficult to say, at one point there were virologists studying the RNA genetic lineage of this particular virus--and they stated there was around 350 mutations at this point. I believe the closest "known" strain is the Zaire strain but that might have changed since then. Right now, they can't even accurately count how many cases there are---the WHO estimates a correction factor of 2 right now due to underreporting, cultural differences, etc. Which means, they believe if every case was adequately diagnosed via a lab test and accounted for--the current outbreak is hovering somewhere around 18,000. They use a number of methods to determine this, models based on how many beds should be occupied at any given time, the CDC uses capture-recapture, etc. I think the CDC is estimating a correction factor of more like 2.5 but I guess we'll see after it's contained.
