While the number of add on bits is nice, why does the heavy bolter marine have the backpack that is supposed to be belt feeding the heavy bolter but the weapon actually has a clip instead?

Spoiler bits comparison below...

Indeed. I count a Plasma, Melta, Flamer and Gravguns, a build-a-gun combi-weapon a la the regular kit, a BA flavour power fist, a pistol of each special weapon and a heavy flamer, a Sanguinary Guard style Mk8 breastplate, a whole bunch of other BA flavour pads.

I can't see from the picture, but my guess is that what looks like a clip is actually just a feeding mechanism to align the belt as it enters the gun. But I might be totally wrong and they just messed up

Well the top of the backpack resembles two HB clips. Maybe its the most efficient manner of carrying spare magazines for a HB?

It's a fast moving thread right now but I edited pics into my previous post while you were posting. It is possible that the belt feed goes backward behind the weapon instead of across the front but you'd likely see that. I wonder if this is just a goof on the part of the model designer if that isn't the case. IMO it just looks strange compared with the other weapons.

Nah, it's just that standard backpack for the HB at least from that angle.

In the fluff, the clip is supposed to be 60 rounds whereas the backpack is 200 or 250 with each "burst" being 10 rounds according to the RPG.

HB looks to be the same set up as the sternguard one. Rather then belt feed, there are a pair of spare box magazines stuck on the top of the (modified) backpack. Makes more sense for a marine on the move; the belt won’t get in the way when you charge across the battlefield.

Can’t wait to see the full sprue pics on that tac squad. I don’t need any more, but what I’ve seen from the leaks it’s a thing of beauty.

It definitely looks like you're right about there being no ammo belt. Maybe he's modeled as if he's in the middle of a tense fight, out of ammo, and to the point of using a spare magazine in a desperate bid to survive? But more than likely, the artist just sculpted the weapon the way he wanted, and completely forgot about the backpack!

EDIT: Or Nevelon is right and it's a Sternguard-style, "mobile", Heavy Bolter set-up.

Thanks, Nevelon, for pointing that out. I wasn't aware of the same IMO goofy layout for the heavy bolter in the sternguard kit. I don't see the backpack as being different enough though from the normal "belt" one but admittedly I'm basing this off of pics from a single angle. They both look like they've got "clips" somewhat melded into the top of a regular backpack.

Spoiler:

In any case, the precendent for this type of design exists whether I like it visually or not so it isn't really news and I'll drop it.

Not like gravs really matter except on one unit (bikes).. BA probably won't get centurions.

So unless BA players want to use non-scoring bikes I don't see much of a benefit of grav guns.

Non-Objective Secured bikes. They're still scoring. And there's almost guaranteed to be a Blood Angels specific detachment which doesn't have ObSec anyway (but Descent of Angels or something), which may be preferable to use.

Agreed. Though I will say that a Grav-pistol on a sergeant or 2 would be better buys than Plasma Pistols. Still prefer Infernus Pistols though, and they're probably cheaper.

It's box, or drum fed, not clip fed, those are extra drums/boxes of ammo on his pack.

A clip is a metal clip that holds a few rounds up to maybe ten, the ammo is loaded into the weapon directly from the clip or into a magazine of about thirty rounds, thus you would need three clips of ten rounds, the clips are then discarded. A magazine holds ammo and is loaded into a weapon and the magazine directly feeds the weapon after it is loaded. A box of ammo or drum generally holds belted ammo which is fed into a belt fed machine gun/belt fed weapon. The box/drum comes loaded with linked or belted ammo, you just open the feed tray to the weapon, snap on the box/drum of ammo, pull at the belt pulling it over the feed tray aligning the first round. You then close the feed tray and either you have already charged the weapon by pulling back the charging handle or you do it after it is loaded. Typically machineguns Fire open bolt to allow faster cooling of the chamber and barrel. Anyway once the belt is fed and the feed tray is closed and the weapon is charged all that is left is to remove it from safe action and search for targets. The drum or box allows easier transport for the machinegun during mobile action, so the belt doesn't get hung up etc etc.

It will make sense when you see it. It's odd that the painter colored the drums/boxes of ammo differently which could cause confusion, I'll probably stick with black on the boxes of belt ammo both on the heavy bolter and his pack.
