Well tonight starts night 1 of my bunker project for infinity, Will probably take 14 to 16 months to complete considering my work, school, life and other crap.

4 x 4 board (16 tiles) and plan to make it a bit modular. I just cut about 350+ square styrene tiles to glue in MDF boards. Super glue will be faster probably less messy too as well as being more expensive. Liquid nails or some plastic/rubber cement is another idea.

Over the long haul what do you think is better, anyone have experience with this?

I'm just starting the routing process to give the tiles a rounded edge. I will not be tracking this by time but By seasons of various series. First up, Dexter Season 6 episode 1.

Spoiler:

Found out I had to make a backer board as tiles start to feed into the router bits and now need to make a feather board to prevent board jumping, getting very uneven results.

This is going to be a pain in the ass.

PVA. Superglue won't bond to MDF, just soak in and maybe be a bit tacky before drying (and might melt the styrene), and Liquid Nails I think is going a bit far. Sticking wood to something is what PVA is good at.

Are these tiles going to be the board and not used for buildings/walls? Use the styrene for your bunkers/walls then you shouldn't really need to worry about gluing it to MDF.

For the foundations, play area, I found it was easier to get 1/8" MDF board, comes in a 2'x4', from the home depot. You could go with 1/4" as well although I felt that was too heavy, but the 1/8" was just right and provided enough support for miniatures and buildings. I then cut them into my squares.

If you want something to be able to stick on to them or paint, you can just prime and paint. Although I used Gesso to give them a finish that let me build on better. The MDF was easier to cut notches with my dremel, scrollsaw (coping saw) and table saw so that I could make them lock together or if wanted to create multiple levels.

I have glued MDF with success using super glue, however I have never tested the longer term effects of it. Being a playable surface, I would imagine the styrene tiles would pop off after a while.

@Dark Severance

Yes the tiles are being glued to MDF boards, as of right now I am using 1/8 MDF boards going to see if home depot carries 3/16 (gods fractions are stupid). Think the 3/16 would be best as I plan on drilling a 1/8 hole for rare earth magnets to prevent board from drifting, if I go with 1/8 thickness I will have to use a smaller magnet creating a bigger pain in the ass.

And gluing them to MDF will be necessary as I do not want bland tiles.

going for a sci fi floor tyle you would see in a video game or movie

Yeah I have flat thin magnets that I've used to secure cosplay armor. The table has a grid pattern with the magnets there, small thin metal piece on the boards so it lets me swap the boards out. I have a better idea on what you are doing now.

I will be carrying mine around to different homes and shop, so It's impossible to go your route. I could do a Lap joint with my router but I see it as extra work.

That does make sense, portability can be an issue. Currently mine is setup with 2 pieces of 2'x6' plywood, connected with a piano hinge so it can fold up and take with me. I plan on trying to create something a bit more than can break down a smaller probably 12" squares that I can stack into a case but that project is waiting in the queue after everything else currently.
